Thankyou for your thoughtful video. Whilst I agree about thinking about original shots...perhaps more pertinet if you are coming from the perspective of a professional photographer...looking for uniqueness...I believe that if you are going to a location, particularly for the first time. Taking those 'classic' or 'popular' views is equally valid. Since it is your photograph. Your interpretation of the scene and most importantly if it is a 'keeper'...you took it....Then perhaps print it, frame it, put it on the wall, sit back...look at it and say...yes I took that.

Great video Nigel, I think something I've learnt the hard way recently is making sure I plan to make sure I'll have enough food and water, there is nothing worst than traveling miles to get somewhere and just have a complete mental block or going before the light gets good because you're dehydrated or hungry.

This is why your channel is one of the best out there Nigel as it’s not just about the sharing of your images, it’s about the practicalities and processes that your follow to get to the image stage. Learned so much from your channel and delighted to see the 70k barrier breached and know it will not stop there.

So glad I watched this video. I'm going to Iceland for my first time end of May. I have spent hours watching videos such as yours photographing Iceland, read tons of articles , reading guidebooks, maps, etc etc. I feel good that I'm following some of your ideas, and know I need to work on doing better on others. I have hired a native landscape photographer for my first day, and hope to get off to an amazing start. Now, I need to go do some more homework on learning my camera! I especially like long exposure Black & White but am far from having any mastery of it.

Hi Nigel. I agree with your 7 tips. I planned three big photography trips: Poland (three years ago), Slovenia (last year) and Dolomites (this summer). And I learned a lot from my mistakes. Your best tip is surely "choose few locations". My first and second trips were "japanese style trip". I saw a lot of locations, but poor pics.
So for Dolomites i chose 5 main locations and 7 reserve locations (so i can decide during trip to confirm o delete some locations and/or go to another cause to weather, timing, journey accidents, ecc.)
Then I chose 2 locations to sleep and from there move to the locations to photograph. This was a car trip so I took with me almost all my gear and chose day by day what I need for the location of that particular day and make my bag on it, leaving the rest of the equipment at the hotel. But this was a special case (car trip).

Most of these tips I had heard before and often used but the one that struck me the most was researching about the history and culture of the area. Lately I have realized that when I do a little prep work on the cultural and historical aspects of a new area, it tends to influence the way I take my own photos. I don't really think in terms of helping tell the story as much as it seems to help me in sensing the mood and feeling of the shot. It is actually difficult to explain but I am convinced you are correct and it is something I now regularly do in my own photography.

OS maps available as an app and on windows & mac. The pro version allows you to plot a route and download it to your phone should you have no connection. The route plotting also gives you a good indication how far you will need to walk.I am sure we all done that, underestimated the distance once on location.

All good suggestions. You do a lot more planning than I ever did. My trips tend to be road trips once I get to my main destination. In general, I like to have a drive day then a be there day. Which usually means that I have part of the afternoon, all the next day, and the morning of the following day in a location before driving to my next location. I know a few specific places I want to photograph in each location. But, other than that I like to explore and be surprised. I never get tired of travel and photography.

Chuckles in "only owns two lenses."
Had an amazing two weeks in Japan in 2019 and honestly could have gotten by with *just* my 35mm prime if I'd had to, but it was nice to have the 55-200mm zoom for a festival parade, all packed into an extra large handbag that I could also nest into a backpack since I was going everywhere by mass transit.
Do the research, build an itinerary based on where you want to go and what's going on - you can usually find out about seasonal festivals, museum exhibitions, etc. with a little digging.
Don't forget comfortable footwear. You'll be on your feet more than you think you will.

An outstanding tutorial and travel overview Nigel! This video is/was very helpful for traveling to locations and being prepared, very helpful. During the video, you mentioned contacting a local to assist in getting around and to aid in finding locations for shooting, who or should I say, how have you make these contacts before your travels?
I agree with traveling light and only packing the necessities instead of luging the unneeded equipment around. I thought about this before our travels to Ireland, even though I ended up taking items I didn't even use or need, I guess it takes lots of practice so I'll just have to practice more, LOL! Nigel, Thank you again for this very helpful video, I've saved it to go through and to write up a checklist.

„Don‘t take more than 3 lenses“
3? 3?? I think two is already difficult. OK, my case may be special, because I carry a lot of dog equipment with me such as an extra water bottle or toys. I once carried a 13kg backpack and decided to really size down my equipment. 1 camera, 1 lens, 1 iPhone for filming. Heaviest thing is my tripod though (Vanguard Alta Pro 263AB)

Anybody else watch "Tips" videos on TH-cam and feel like you didn't learn anything at all? This here video is very informative, awesome stuff Mr. Danson! This will definitely be my planning process moving forward.
Just wanted to add some thoughts:
Tip #1 - 100% Agreed. Less is more, unless you're camping out there for a few days and are bringing supplies anyways.
Tip #4 - I feel this way personally but hearing you say it makes me feel better about not being one of those water bug photographers running all over the place trying to capture any and everything.
Tip #5 - This is a great low key tip that I learned first hand. I live in northern Canada, and the basic knowledge of "the sun sets in the west" does not apply here; in winter its more south, and summer most "nights" it doesn't really set; more like naps for an hour.
Tip #7 - This is also a great low key tip. Filling your head with other peoples photos is dangerous in that, you might subconsciously be hunting for their shot instead of finding your own. I've gotten caught up in this and it sucks when I look back and feel unoriginal. Be inspired but don't forget to be creative too.
I also wanted to ask, do you ever bring protection depending on the location? That's something I haven't heard anyone talk about before. As I've mentioned I live in Canada so a lot of the places I go carries a risk of murderous animal encounters. Bear spray or a gun is a definite must if you're trekking into the forest where wolves play.

Super timely video. Im just about to take a photography trip to Laos. When I took my last trip to Myanmar, I destroyed a lens (the kit one fortunately) and nearly my camera because of the environment I was in. I was in a hot, humid climate, and I left my drybox at home to cut on weight. At night, my camera was in a air conditioned room. This created condensation in the camera, nearly frying my mothorboard. It's good to check forums to learn about camera care in different climates if your a newbie shooter like me :)

Good tips, Nigel. Just returned from 3 days in the Bar Harbor, Maine area, exploring Acadia National Park. Got the common shots from Cadillac Mountain and Jordan Pond. Excellent - as a parent and accommodating disability adds extra challenges - including using allowable annual-leave for family - I really have to plan carefully. I travel light (3LT-Leo tripod, 10-20mm, 18-200, 105 macro, speedlight for flash, 6 batteries) and plan on a maximum of 2-3 hours away from the family, so holidays have to be located in beautiful places (Peaks, Lakes, Downs, Coast). My most favourite non-camera gear..... OS 25k maps with compass :-)

I did setup it my bedroom, low light and fotographed a book on a small stand. Then checked the noise I could see in lightroom. But how do you do the depth of field analysis so you have the knowledge of what F8 in the field is like? Thanks.

Batteries are a function of chemical reactions. In cold weather the chemicals can not react as fast as in warm. In fact keeping a battery cold will extend the life of the battery, by slowing the chemical discharge. A cold battery may still be good but will not have the same the power as a warm one.

I do agree that taking landscape images is also about the journey, however I would disagree that the ability to hike to remote spots and spend time on one image is the only qualifying criteria for being a landscape photographer. I believe it’s about the success of the image you capture, no matter HOW you capture it, whether from the side of the road or the top of a mountain, 5 mins or 5 hours.
