  • This is my Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome (WPW) story with Catheter ablation surgery when I was a child. My heart condition caused severe recurrent palpitations however after surgery at 9 years old I have has no other symptoms or further issues. If you would like to know more or I haven't covered something please do feel free to ask in the comments or directly.

I was diagnosed with this at 18 (This year), even though I had been experiencing these symptoms for at least 5 years at that point, shortness of breath, dizziness, palpitations, near fainting episodes, chest pain, and during the episodes my heartbeat was often over 250 bpm, usually lasting 5-7 minutes, with my longest episode being 15 minutes. During all of these, my heartbeat was so strong that my friends could physically see my chest moving because of it. I never tried to get it diagnosed until last year (though diagnosis got delayed by a year due to Covid) because I just thought I had bad stamina 😅.
Anyhow, they were able to diagnose it fairly quickly as WPW Syndrome and scheduled me EP studies and ablation for this summer. However, during the operation, they realised that they could not go through with the ablation due to the location of my accessory pathway. Every time they would try to, it would start affecting my AV node, something that if damaged would lead to me needing a pacemaker for the rest of my life. They tried to ablate it with both the heating catheter, and then with the freezing catheter, but neither worked so they ultimately made the decision not to risk it.
The catheter ablation is successful in 85%-95% of cases, however unfortunately I was one of the few where it was not successful. Currently, and for my foreseeable future, I am on beta-blockers. I still get one of episodes once in a while, especially if I do anything strenuous that would cause my heart to beat faster, but otherwise, I am doing ok. Though no alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine, or any recreational drugs for me for the rest of my life. The only other issue I could have is if I were to get pregnant I would have to go off my medication.
But the point of me sharing my story here is to help people who feel unsafe going through with the ablation, or to those whos was unsuccessful like mine, that it does not mean you are alone. Of course, everyone's situation is different so don't decide to go through with the operation just because it didn't work for one person. And if you're worried about how painful it might be, I can assure you that it really isn't. For me, there were only a few incisions on the side of my groin, and they healed up pretty quickly. For the operation itself, well I spent most of it asleep due to the painkillers, and only felt mildly uncomfortable at times, but that was honestly expected with something poking around in my heart 😂.
So to any of you who have been recently diagnosed with WPW, all I can say is don't let it stress you out too much and just do what is best for you.

Thanks for your sharing. I am one of this syndrome patient, since had been diagnosed for almost last 5 years. 2021 is a challenging and stressful year, which causes me feeling those symptoms heavily, in first, I am thinking to let it be, don't decide to do ablation or taking medication. But recently really struggled with those symptoms, then try to get suggestions online, luckily seeing this video and your post, feeling that you are much positive person even though your operation was unsuccessful. Your sharing brings hopes to us. And I wish you all the best in future and God bless you always.

I still remember a time that I thought I was never going to be cured. You get there its an extremely hard time that will challenge your emotions. I had a failed surgery at first and had to go back to a seccond surgery. All this and I was 16 at the time so my emotions were pretty all over the place. When my first surgery failed I completely lost hope. I was certain I would live with this condition until it took my life. Now i barely think about it, my friend asked me the other day about it and I had forgotten it existed. Felt amazing to laugh it off like it was just a small thing, I thank the doctors at sick kids in toronto for my life and I am forever grateful.

Hi Death Ally. Thank you for sharing your story. Your symptoms sound similar to mine. When I was a kid growing up in the 1970's- 80's I was told my symptoms were just "growing pains" and normal, and that I would grown out of them. Yyyyyeah. no. It wasn't until I was 19, a year into the Navy, and 2000 miles from family that I found out the truth. Like you, I was going to have another ablation a couple years ago, but would result in me having to have a pacemaker. Well... long story short, I ended up having to get a pacemaker anyways for other issues. So... this Friday I'm getting the ablation I was supposed to get a couple years ago. I hope your doing better now.

No idea how I just found this video lol. But I was Diagnosed with this at age 18! I had symptoms growing up, : Shortness of breathe, really fast heart beat, dizzy, sick feeling. My mom made a appointment with our primary, this was when I was in Junior High. My primary said she thought this was just asthma, I wish my primary would've looked more into this.. so I had an inhaler for years, brought it with me everywhere during my sporting events. I was playing every sport growing up. One time, during a volleyball game, my mom had to take me home because my heart was beating so fast (I could see my shirt moving), I felt so dizzy, short of breathe. I tried using my inhaler. didn't seem to help. But eventually, while I was at home I got my heart rate to go down and felt better... fast forward to college years... (All in between the years this happened on and off) I was playing dodge ball one night on campus and of course it was very extensive running and playing. My heart couldn't stop racing, felt short of breathe, dizzy felt like I could pass out, I did walk with my friends back to the dorm. I drank water. I was in my dorm room by myself that night, the symptoms didn't get better, actually worse. Luckily, no idea how, I was able to walk down the dorm to a friends room and tell them I can't breathe, I was crying, sweating. By the grace of God their was an ambulance already on campus for another call!!! so she got them to come upstairs to my dorm and I kept fainting in and out, the paramedics knew i couldn't breathe and knew my heart rate was high, so I taken on ambulance to hospital. Mind you, I was alone! my parents, sisters all lived 2 hours away :(. I'll always remember this entire ordeal. So many doctors, nurses, techs doing ekgs labs, etc. One nurse, in particular held my hand the entire time because I was crying in tears because my heart beat wouldn't go down and i couldn't breathe (they put medicine through my veins and everything) 250 beats per minute at age 18, (I think that was my age?) . But hours went by they got it down and the next morning a cardiologist came in to talk to me about WPW.
1st ablation in the hospital was so scary, I was in surgery for 8 hours. They had to use the defibrillator during operation, my heart wasn't strong. My family did get to come to see me that morning before the procedure, since the college was able to contact them with what happened.
In that year I had to have 3 heart ablations because my rhythm wouldn't go down. It was the scariest thing in my life! :/. Didn't know this was a thing.
BUT years later, 30 now, doing good! :) 3 kids, married. I try to watch my caffeine intake because that can make my heart rate go up and I don't want that happening again!
More people need to be aware of this because it's so scary!

I was diagnosed with WPW in 1990 when I was 19 and in the US Navy. I passed out while marching with my company back to our barracks after our first day of training. While testing my heart, it happened again and I passed out on the operating table. The doctors said my heart was going 215bpm when I passed out. I was told that this condition was corrected by open heart surgery at that time, but I was given the option to be a guinea pig for civilian doctors at UCSD for an a then experimental procedure (ablation). I had it done twice at that time. The procedures corrected the problem enough that the WPW it wasn't life threatening and enough that I could stay in the Navy... but I still had it.. Now, here I am today... 50 years old... and about to have another heart ablation this Friday. #KeepingMyFingersCrossed

I’ve been having severe chest pains and I’m having “anxiety feelings” I feel like my chest is being crushed, I’ve been dizzy as well very very often. My dr took it as acid reflux Wich I knew the pain was different from acid reflux. I am seeing a cardiologist trmw and I am freaking out Because I don’t know what to expect. Especially having little babies at home. Please pray for me ! Thank you for your story I really appreciate it 😀

Growing up it was really difficult to talk to people about how I felt cause I would get heart palpitations so often I thought and was told I had nothing even in moments when I felt so scared that I was grabbing my chest out of fear. Then one day in my sophomore year, I had to go to the hospital cause my heart rate spiked and I was turning pale. I had the procedure done and it was unsuccessful cause I was the un-lucky 10% and that’s when I found out I have WPW and PVC besides my SVT and since then I’ve taken medication but the fear and panic attacks linger so I’m posting this to hope that there is anyone who shares my story.

i just found this searching you tube. Thanks for writing this. My daughter Madison was born in January of '85, so just a little younger than you. She had one attack of WPW tachycardia when she was about six weeks old. We had no idea of the WPW condition, and she had no symptoms of anything before the attack. We took her to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, and they very fortunately had a baby heart specialist on duty when we came in. The initial treatment to get the heart to slow down to normal was to smother the baby with a bag of ice, until the heart slowed down. This was to activate what I think is called diving seal reflex, which is maybe something like a hibernation instinct. I think there would be better ways to do it if she had been older, but the bag of ice worked for her. My wife and I got ushered out of the ER room before this happened. It was very scary for us.
She ended up staying in a nicu on a heart monitor for three days, and we were mostly allowed to stay with her in the room. After the three days of tests and observation, she was put on digoxin drops, and she stayed on that for a couple years or so. She never had the dose upped and essentially just grew out of it, and I believe the WPW just healed as she grew. She's never had another incident of the tachycardia.
I could talk about this a lot more, it was a shocking incident. But I'll close with this. When we left to go to the hospital, we had a pot of mushroom soup on the stove on low. It stayed there for three days till we came home.

When I was a child I had the same experience as you described in the video. At the time, I knew it wasn’t quite right however I never really felt scared for my life for some reason. Like you said, you kinda get used to it..it kinda became my normal. Doctors at that couldn’t find what was wrong. Several years later as a adult I became a paramedic and did a EKG on myself and saw WPW and took it to my doctor to confirm and sure enough I had it. Explained all the episodes I had as a child. It’s been nearly 10 years now since my last episode. I’m more active now that I ever was and still no symptoms. Doctors currently for me didn’t recommend any ablation as of right now however proceed with it if I started to have symptoms again.

Thanks for sharing. I was 11-12 when my episodes first started. In the beginning they only lasted for 10-15 minutes, but my last episode lasted 2 hours and went up to 298 bpm. I had lost a lot of weight over the course of time waiting to see if surgery was going to be needed. By the end the doctors knew things were going to get worse for my body and brain (due to improper oxygen intake) if something wasn’t done. So, 1992 was the year for my open heart surgery here in Canada. 8 hours long and 3 days in ICU, at 12 years old. I get “fluttering” still from time to time, they have told me no more coffee about 7 years ago, although I have just been able to quite drinking it just recently. The other issue that I developed, due to mainly the surgery, was Tietz Syndrome. This they believe is from my chest bone being put in two to get to my heart. TS is SOOOO painful. But if you don’t have to undergo full blown open heart now, TS will most likely not be a big possibility to get.

I had my ablation at the John Radcliffe hospital and the doctors there were incredible with me as I was very nervous. The symptoms are awful, I had the worst palpitations but my ablation had worked wonders. Amazing what they can do now! I had two incisions in my groin and you can barely see the scars. I stayed one night in hospital as I was the last surgery of the day however people who were earlier on in the day went home the same day! I was diagnosed 20 years ago when I was 14- when my heart rate got up over 300 beats per minute (at least that’s as high as the school nurse could count). Had the first ablation attempt at 15 years old. My second attempt, I was 31. I am nervous about living with this for the rest of my life. And I would love to have kids someday soon but I am not sure it’s possible.

I ignored it ,. Went back to sleep , than the following days I been feeling light headed and dizzyness like I was gonna faint at work , but than in 2 different separate days my heart beated fast but it didn't go on for 15 minutes, it was more like 2 to 3 minutes, the third time around it's when I went to the hospital, I found out than I had wpws

I am 14 and i have WPW too, the diagnose was before 2 years, but with 8 years i had the first "attact", at this time i often had panic because i had fear because i thought i will die, my parents never were with me when i had my "attacts". when i was 12 my mum went the first time to the doctor with me and he diagnosed WPW. Since last year it is getting worse, my heart rate goes up to 255bpm and i have very very often "attacts", 2 times i passed out. My ablation is in 5 months.

The ablation is a terrifying experience because you are awake and they flood the body with something that replicates the tachycardia episodes - you see, hear, and feel everything! After my procedure I was cocky, thought I was done with the condition. Unfortunately after about a year the symptoms have returned with worse episodes than before and I am undergoing more tests. (It’s not always a “happily ever after and god bless the NHS” story.)
