Hi, for your mom’s scarf I recommend the following: Cast on in multiples of 3. For each row K1, YO, K 2 together. Sometimes I will put a border on it, sometimes not. I have used the type of yarn that you have with this stitch pattern and I liked it. Whatever pattern you do decide on, I hope we get to see the finished project . This was another very enjoyable episode ❤
Translating mom: "I love this yarn and it'd be great if "someone" would maybe knit it up for some gifting day"☺ I'd recommend the free scarf pattern "The Simple Thing", it is a garter stitch scarf similar to the Sophie scarf. You could play with the number of rows between the shaping to alter the shape. I've knit one with thick and thin handspun gradient yarn, it is lovely. For just one skein, weight it before knitting, weight it as you go and then start decreasing a few gram before you hit the 50%weight benchmark (due to the thick-and-thin structure) to absolutely not loose to the yarnchicken. I recommend getting one of those high precision scales which weight up to decimals past one gram (try looking up pocket scales), they are very handy for any game of yarnchicken. Take the beginning of the scarf as a swatch- grab any large needle, see if you like the look and feel. If not, rip it out and start over going up or down. I wouldn't cut into the skein, since it's already such a limited amount of yarn.
You obviously don’t have a yarn addiction. You made me giggle when you said you have to know what the yarn you purchase will be for. People like me love the yarn so much that just buying it makes us happy regardless of what it’s for. Next the yarn your mom loved I too love!!! Knitpicks had a pattern 16 years ago where you use all kinds of different weight yarns for a scarf. All you do is leave a length of yarn for fringe on each end of each row. Knit every row (garter stitch) It creates a nubby texture for all the different gauges of yarn. It comes out soooo pretty!!!
Hahahaha I know it would be a slippery slope, so I'm trying to keep the 'yarn for yarn's sake' impulse at bay as long as I can, but I'm sure it'll come for me eventually 😂
Thanks for sharing photos from your trip! For the record, I would totally sit through a 90 minute podcast in the future. Also, this might not be exactly what you’re looking for, but I think that beautiful Italian yarn would be a good fit for a pattern by Martina Behm. Edit: a huge thank you for taking my feedback about the captions and editing them here!
Yes, I went to Athens and Nafplion for ten days in March and the temps were similar. I wore my knits in various combos every single day (Nurture bralette by Celine Feyten, Sonya Tee by Paulastrickt and Flores sweater by Eri Shimuzi). Along with a cotton tee and a linen shirt and pants, that was all I needed. Wool is magical 🧶💫
Let your mom’s artsy yarn be the “star” 🌟 and use a large needle size to make a nice open stockinette (or even garter) fabric. If there’s too wild a difference in weight along the length of the fibre when you unwind it, you could hold it double with a fingering or sport weight to give it more condistent structure. Do some math though as I worry you might not have enough length in that one skein for a full scarf. In that case, maybe a cowel, knitting in the round would be nice! Or - if she really wants a scarf - you could find a coorordinating solid and let the art skein be interesting stripes. Can’t wait to see what you make!
I love hearing about how well your knits worked for you. It’s funny because when you said how much knitwear you took with you I thought you meant you were taking projects you were working on lol! I just can’t travel without some thing to work on! And then I get a fear of what if I finish that one I need a second project as a back up! Although I have never actually had that happen. But there’s always the worry! Anyway, you make me want to see Italy again. Will you please share the link for the Airbnb where you stayed?
Great video! I'm currently in Southern Portugal and and it's probably warmer than Almalfi. But we went to Porto first and it was so damp and cold. I brought a couple of knits with me and ended up wearing them in Porto the whole time. I also finished a knitted cardigan while there and wore that one too. Spring in Europe is unpredictable for sure and wool is useful! Rosie
The mid-trip cardigan completion feels like a real 'necessity is the mother of invention' moment 😂 Needed more wool garments so you finished one! Hahahah amazing.
i would look through all the patterns from knit collage for the yarn for your mom! they might have something that fits the bill. though i think you could improvise a scarf pattern really easily and get the tapered ends you’re wanting
omg the struggle of wanting to pack a knitting project and already knitted garments to wear and worrying about where you'll put the yarn you will inevitably purchase 🤣
I visited Maine recently and my knit garments kept me from being absolutely miserable - I had one rustic wool sweater and one merino + mohair sweater and was wearing one or the other almost constantly, an alpaca beret, and my wool socks. I think I would have had a significantly worse time without my handmade garments to keep me comfortable

Ooh this is a wonderful suggestion, thank you! 😄

Ooh I'll have to look into her, thank you! And of course, thank you for the reminder 😄
What a beautiful vacation! Yay for wool being the hero and keeping you comfy. Happy knitting 💚🧶💚
Thank you so much for watching! Happy knitting 😄

That sounds like an incredible trip! 😍 Knits are the best!

Ooh great point about the length-I'll have to keep an eye out for that and consider some supplemental yarn options! Thank you!
This is so helpful! I'm traveling to Scotland for 10 days in November and I'm planning on carry-on only.
Oh yay, I'm so glad it was helpful! Scotland feels like the PERFECT place to get maximum use out of your knits 😄 I hope you have the best time!
@AliMakesEverything Thank you Ali!

Great video I like that you shared all your knots and what you wore and why. A great video
Thanks so much for watching! 😄

You're probably right, I don't know why I think this has to be complicated 😂
omg the struggle of wanting to pack a knitting project and already knitted garments to wear and worrying about where you'll put the yarn you will inevitably purchase 🤣
Truly 😂 I think it's easier if you're going to a warm destination 😂
You may want to check out patterns by Knit Collage since they use similar yarns in their work. Beautiful Italian yarns!
Oooh I see what you mean! Thanks so much for the tip!

Hooray for trip-saving knits! So glad yours were as helpful for you as mine were for me! 😄
What is happening with your “mum voice” here 😂
Btw I’ve figured out how to comment.
You’re in trouble now!
Oh god, how are you still watching 😂🤦🏻♀️😂
Man this is really motivating me to finish a WIP before going to Italy at the end of the month 🧶🇮🇹
Time to get a move on with that cumulus! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
