Steve Martin does a bit where he talks about the idea of doing a show where the tickets are exorbitantly expensive and he could make something like 200 million dollars in a single night. He says "one show, goodbye " I believe this to be the Steve Martin bit to which that the young man was referring.
I've never been a huge fan of Steve Martin's stand-up, but I believe that on one of his records he said something along the lines of, "[If I could sell out a stadium at $10,000 a ticket, I'm done]". I heard it on You Made it Weird, or WTF or one of those comedy podcasts. Sorry that I can't be more specific.
@terrybrass The special this is from, "You Should Have Told Me" is coming out on DVD on the 14th. Check out Paul F. Tompkins' website to see how to pre-order it. I don't remember the exact link.
@inf0dump It's from a bootleg called "This Fucking Thing is Short". You can also hear the same story recounted in episode 82 of "Stop Podcasting Yourself".
All these people saying it's The Jerk it's like come on. You seriously think PFT and his friends didn't think of that? 200 dollars has nothing to do with the jerk.
I believe it's a reference to Steve Martin's bit where he talks about how much money he takes in if he fills up the stadium. Something like: "How much did you pay to get in here? 2 dollars? Well, 2,000 seats at $2 a ticket, that's like $4,000. 2,000 seats at $5 a ticket, that's $10,000. 2,000 seats at $1,000 a ticket, that's 2 million dollars. That's what I'm shooting for. One show... GOODBYE." That certainly fits with the idea that he's outta here as soon as he gets his money.
@crgmltn I got it from a link on the aspecialthing forums, in some kind of bootlegs thread. do a little digging and you might be able to find it. however, on a podcast somewhere someone told PFT that this had been leaked and he sounded bummed, so it may have since been taken down.
Maybe he meant Dick Martin from _Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In_, that lost sketch where Martin vows to leave the show after he finds the $200 bill Rowan hid somewhere. A sketch that probably doesn't exist.
I love how you think it's an "obvious reference" and then list two random references that are clearly bullshit. And end it with Maybe. Came in a little too strong with the Obvious Reference, didn't you?

in the jerk he leaves home twice, once in the beginning and again when he does the whole "and that's all i need" bit
👍
LOVE this bit... Paul F Tompkins is great hahaa
Saw him live tonight at Just for Laughs in Montreal!
First part of "Wild and Crazy Guy" side 2. Financial Disclosure about ticket prices and projected concert earnings: "One show... GOODBYE."
It's definitely that. Don't know how anyone could argue otherwise.
Agreed

Had to be "The Jerk". It's all about a guy leaving home.
All I need...

He did I think it was on his album "A Wild and Crazy Guy"

I agree Steve McQueen is the only answer that really holds up
Go watch The Jerk, starring Steve Martin.
Watch "The Jerk". The "All I need is this lamp" bit.
I think the guy just meant to say "Steve McQueen", king of the getaway car ride....
It's Steve Martin from the Jerk when he left his girl and didn't want anything but this thermos, this ashtray, etc. or in this case 200 dollars.
Half the battle with Paul F Tompkins' comedy is because he's so eloquent and meticulous.
It's a reference from The Jerk. How does Paul not know this? He's a comedian.
Isn't that the one where Steve Martin makes millions, not $200, and then goes bankrupt and moves back home, the opposite of leaving?
All these people saying it's The Jerk it's like come on. You seriously think PFT and his friends didn't think of that? 200 dollars has nothing to do with the jerk.
The year would be ~88-91 if he was in his early 20s.
"Get that degree and get out of THIS bullshit..." - Steve Martin
BUSTED

@trenchparty i think you're right. even though steve martin was broke at the part when he left right?
Clearly a reference to "The Jerk".

Is there any more from this set?
the guy was probably referencing The Jerk
2010, when $2000 was a 'good sum' of money.
Yea but he said two hundred.
I thought that, too. But it could have been The Jerk, too.

paul rudd tompkins
The younger man's name was Bill.
what is this from? like what's the name of the whole stand up?
Heather Jackling album is "This fucking thing is short"
OrbGoblin thank you!
@Harpsichord25 Any chance you know where to find the bootleg for download?
Its so obvious that he wanted his security deposit back ($200 security deposit).
Planes trains and automobiles
No.
Ok
Is Steve Martin aware of this!!! LMAO
The Steve Martin part I'm not sure about
The Jerk left in a funny way. Could have been that.
Obvious reference to something like maybe Maid in Manhattan, or MASH. Maybe.
I love how you think it's an "obvious reference" and then list two random references that are clearly bullshit. And end it with Maybe. Came in a little too strong with the Obvious Reference, didn't you?
Kinda sad he spent five minutes building a joke and the punchline was ruined by the title of the video.
Ikr. But it's how I found the video again.. so I'm OK with it .
...Steve McQueen is a great theory too. Good one, you guys.
Pretty sure the dude meant to say Dennis Miller.
That's what I always thought
Maybe Plains, trains and Automobiles? Weren't they scrounging money to buy tickets for something?
poorly made the jerk reference
