  • EXPEDITION ELLESMERE SERIES
    The first video in a series from my two-month Arctic wildlife photography expedition to the Ellesmere Island. I am on a mission with my friend Anders Bilgram to photograph the white Arctic wolf and to find the letters from the Danish adventurer Christian Vibe who was here 80 years ago.
    From the small window in the twin otter airplane, I could see the desolated land underneath. Only ice and mountains, black and white, nothing else. A frozen world with no sign of life. This is Ellesmere Island and it is here I am going to spend the next two months chasing my dream. - the dream about getting a glimpse and maybe even photograph the white Arctic wolf.
    Video about the equipment for the expedition: • 2 MONTH PHOTOGRAPHY EX...
    Video about testing the equipment in Norway: • 4 DAY SOLO WINTER CAMP...
    --
    * It started as a dream:
    The idea about going on an expedition to Ellesmere Island was born a late evening where my good friend Anders Bilgram and I were looking at maps, talking about adventures and having a snaps. The next day I wrote him that I was going to Ellesmere Island to photograph the white Arctic wolf and the following day he asked if we should go together, because he had some historical interest in that area. That was basically how it all started. We had a year and a half to plan and prepare the expedition and there was a lot to do. Everything from permissions and researching to physical training, selection and testing of gear and equipment. We would be 5 weeks in the wild without any options for supplies so we could not afford anything to fail out there. Most of our clothes was from Klättermusen simply because I have a lot of great experience with the models I have used on previous trips and expeditions.
    We arrived to Grise Fiord late in March and the temperatures were not as bad as we expected. After a week of preparations, we took off and headed north on snowmobiles together with 3 local outfitters. The original plan was to get dropped off on the south point of Axel Heiberg Island and then walk home from there - these plans changed a lot. We quickly discovered that this land seemed almost desolated. I had expected a lot of reindeer, hares, foxes, and muskoxen but after driving for 3 days we had seen nothing. This was not a very good beginning at all.
    * The plan changed:
    We decided to cover a huge area on snow mobiles rather than a very limited area with skies and pulk. We had to find the muskoxen or the reindeer because this would be where the wolves would also be. We talked to the local hunters who suggested to make a combination of driving, staying in a hunter’s cabin and going on skies so that was what we did.
    * Frostbites, frustrations, and polar bears:
    The temperatures up here were much colder than in Grise fiord and one night we had minus 42 Celsius. Wrapped in down clothes it was not a huge problem as long as we kept moving. For the camera equipment is was a huge challenge though since it simply stopped working. The face was another problem and we all got a few frost bites - me on my nose. Besides the cold temperatures, we also had to deal with other challenges such as polar bears entering the camp. One evening when we were having dinner in the tent, we suddenly heard something outside - very very close to the tent. I jumped out without my shoes and a young polar bear was trying to drag out supplies away. I quickly scared him away with the flaregun, but we all slept a bit light after that experience.
    -----
    A big thanks to all the people who have supported us before, under and after this expedition:
    Family and friends for your patience and for taking care of everything in the 10 weeks we were away from home.

    Finally,after a long wait,the first video of the trip has arrived...an early Christmas present! This really gave a sense of what the trip was like,and even though the wildlife images are few and far between,the visual diary of the adventure more than makes up for that. What an adventure of a lifetime this must have been...can't wait to see the next leg of the journey!

    Let's stop and swap out a piston in the engine. And you can't wear gloves to do it. These people are tough and resourceful, must be a pleasure to be around them. A bear, fox and lemming. From sheer exaustion from a long day on the sleds to days of boredom in a cabin, excitement from bear encounters to the careful methodical drudgery of survival. I love it!

      Morten, where did the wood to burn in the cabin come from? Is it sourced nearby and snowmobiled in each time?

    • @Hangs4Fun
      @Hangs4Fun 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sorry for all the questions, but, I noticed many times when seeing tracks of wolves leading off into the distance there was also other smaller sets going in parallel in the same direction. Is the Arctic Wolf hunting via following tracks or is it able to follow by smell (or both I guess)?
      This is better than 95% of the National Geographic episodes I've seen, outstanding Morten

    I'd watch an expedition episode of yours every time over a movie in the cinemas, an episode from a show or the tv program (granted, I don't even watch tv). As I've probably said before, these videos are so great to watch, not just from an entertainment standpoint. You capture what few people are able to see in their lives, unique moments with unique and fascinating creatures. And the fact that you love nature, the animals and just exploring everything, just makes it so true and therefore very good.
    All this, in combination with your filming, editing and choice of music, makes for something far better than anything I've seen on nature programs.
    All the best from Germany!

    Question. What's the best mirrorless camera for wildlife photography under $1500 (body only)

    • @MortenHilmer
      @MortenHilmer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh that is hard for me to answer. I have only tried the Nikon Z6 and Z7 so I am not the right to answer this. I have heard a lot of people talking very good about the Fujifilm

      @@MortenHilmer that's ok. I will do some research on fujifilm and what they have on offer. Thank you.

    As someone who lives in Canada, I think you’d love to photograph the wildlife of British Columbia and Alberta. The mountains, lakes and fauna are spectacular. It’s a must-do.

    Great and amazing full of ice mountain tour. Small house is great help by villagers. Polar bear and white fox pictures are great. Polar bear rolling and white fox one eye open are amazing scenes. Testing done of Nikon camera minus 32 temperature. Great work. Keep going. Best wishes.

    Fun fact: that's not just a Danish saying and it's not that old. "All things come to those who wait" derives from an early 20th C. poem by Lady Mary Montgomerie Curie, who wrote poetry under the pseudonym Violet Fane. The poem was in French; its title, " Tout Vient À Qui Sait Attendre"' translates to "Everything comes to who knows how to wait".
