Sadly both the Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay which was the inspiration for the show and the Woodburn Grange Country Club which is what you see in the titles have both been demolished. The former was cleared and retirement flats built in its place which were named 'Sachs Lodge' in honour of Andrew Sachs who played Manuel ! The Woodburn partially burnt down in a fire and was therefore demolished and it's a housing estate now. It was closed as a hotel before the fire and converted into a nigh-club called 'Basils' !

dabe1971 I visited Torquay a decade ago on a tour of the UK, partly because I wanted to experience the resort town made INTERNATIONALLY famous by Fawlty Towers. I happened by the sign directing to the Gleneagles, diverted my walk to this iconic albeit visually unimpressive property, and only can lay claim to walking into its lobby, at the time a Best Western. There was some sort of look-alike dinner theatre thing offered as entertainment, but why bother? Its a great loss for the comedy world that it was converted into flats, but of course the long gone Woodburn Grange property was an even greater loss because it WAS Fawlty Towers.

Basil Fawlty hated Mr.Johnson in the episode but in real life,John Cleese and Nicky Henson were great mates and stayed mates till Henson sadly died a few years ago (he had cancer for years).
Henson was a pop singer in his early days.
The Psychiatrist was played by Basil Henson(but no relation).
The Aussie girl was played by Luan Peters, who also sadly died a few years ago and she also was lead singer in a late 60's band. She also cropped up at the end of the On The Buses episode 'Canteen Trouble' in 1971 as the girl from the snack machine company.
Nicky Henson later admitted that Mr.Johnson's clothes in this episode were actually his own😄

Thanks for another great reaction! Unfortunately, they don't improve with time - but that's what makes them funny! According to Prunella Scales (Sybil) when planning this series they went through all the things that could possibly go wrong in the hospitality industry and kind of stopped at episode 12 - but I'm sure more could have been done! Having worked in catering previously (in fact, Andrew Sachs aka Manuel was a guest at the restaraunt I worked in on one occasion) and currently in an IT Customer Service role, this series has a special resonance with me. What seems far fetched on screen, is , believe it or not, not too far removed from the truth on occasion! Loving your journey through this series & sporting another great xmas jumper! see you next time!

I absolutely love your Christmas sweaters. Makes my absolute day of preparing food and cleaning which is a months work for a Swede. We're not religious and don't celebrate Christmans, we celebrate Jul and it's no different except we decided that goats and gnomes are part of it.
Also, I want to rest my head on your lap as you tell me about Scotland. I miss it at times but -40C and 16 feet of snow is nice too. You know, I married a Scottish girl once upon a time, a long time ago now, pretty as can be. Young and crazed in love we ignored everyone and everything but as a Swede, and we were living in Sweden, I had to do my military service and that all went well, I stayed on because she got pregnant and it was a good source of income. Went to Bosnia and Kosovo, came home to my now dying wife and ... in the end I raised my kids alone and did a fine job.
Every time I see your videos I say your name as a Glaswegian would, Dawn Marie... Then I go enjoy your video.

I graduated high school right after Fawlty Towers came out. Tight leather pants, Monk boots with stacked heels, a garish polyester shirt unbuttoned to mid-chest (you had to provide the hairy chest), at least one gold chain and carefully blown dry hair. The idea of the show came from Cleese after he stayed at the Gleneagles Hotel (now demolished) in Torquay, Devon (along with the rest of the Monty Python troupe) He encountered the eccentric hotel owner Donald Sinclair. Stuffy & snobbish, Sinclair treated guests as though they were a hindrance to his running of the hotel (a waitress who worked for him stated "it was as if he didn't want the guests to be there"). Sinclair was the inspiration for Cleese's character Basil Fawlty.

Great reaction. To be fair to 'Basil' (someone has to be) he was correct with the young man sneaking in a 'special guest' and hotel regulations. I like the 'one whole bottle of Champagne just for yourself' and the 'just one glass'. It was a bit unfair when 'Basil' should of had his moment of triumph but it was the guy's mother. Of course 'Basil' even by the standards of the time would have been considered very conservative having been in the Korean War (1950-53) and been wounded in the leg, which plays up occasionally. The lady in green that he keeps accidentally touching was meant to be an Australian Tourist hence 'Basil's' supposed interest. Mind you I wonder when he touches her (now in yellow) on the chest a 2nd time at 10:18 if it was planned/scripted (the actress knew it was going to happen) or if John improvised 'I'm sorry I'm confused'. I don't think you could do that these days.
