After you finish with Fawlty Towers (and my absolute favorite episode is coming up), I recommend Black Adder. It doesn't have any of the Python crew in it, but it's very funny.
Has anyone suggested Ripping Yarns yet? It was the next series Michael Palin & Terry Jones did after Python and had some great episodes, especially the hilarious send up of English public schools in the first one. It spoofs "boys own" adventure stories, a different one for each episode, all starring Palin and written by Palin/Jones. Any Python fan should enjoy it but there were only 9 episodes unfortunately.
John Cleese is brilliant in everything he does. His role as the bad-tempered, irritable Basil Fawlty is outstanding. It is absolutely understandable that the series "Fawlty Towers" was ranked first in a list of the 100 best British TV shows by the British Film Institute in 2000. In 2019, it was voted the best British TV sitcom ever by a committee of comedy experts compiled by the Radio Times..
I broke out into a huge smile when I saw your video notification come in. I knew what we were in for. Glad you’re enjoying these, Dawn. Thank you for doing them.
This episode is brilliant to watch with John Cleese's commentary because he just completely loses it when Polly's pretending to be Sybil, he's just howling and braying and snorting with laughter at the sight of her. He also says that this was his favourite episode to make because due to a strike at the BBC, they ended up with an extra week of rehearsals, so the timing of the jokes and reactions was just tighter than if they had the regular amount of time.
You may also enjoy watching "The Young Ones" (12 episodes). John Cleese has said he wished he could have been in it. and if you like that you may also like "Bottom" (18 episodes). :)
I don't know why but Roger's 'Can I have a choc ice?' gets me every time. It seems lots of folks have FT moments that crack them up for no apparent reason. That's mine. RIP Ken Campbell (d.2008) and Una Stubbs (2021). The final episode is a cracker, my personal favourite.
Mine is “oh don’t smile”. Apparently Ken wasn’t supposed to be in this episode. The original actor cast was no longer available when the recording was rescheduled so Ken stepped in at the last moment. Can’t imagine this episode without him :)
0:30 "No more flying circus, no more Fawlty towers, What's next?" Dawn, I really think you'd enjoy "A Fish Called Wanda", 1988. It was written by John Cleese, it also stars him, Michael Palin of flying circus fame is in it, and Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline. I think you'd really like it.
Well there's Ripping Yarns, starring Michael Palin with dozens of guest stars, he usually plays multiple roles. John Cleese shows up for one pointless scene and says absolutely nothing, but it's hilarious. The Deaf Lady is brilliant in her episode. It's an anthology of different stories, all Python like silliness, all set at random periods prior to the second world war. Clockwise, John Cleese as an obsessively punctual headmaster running late... Erik the Viking, John Cleese is the villain, Terry Jones is in it and wrote/directed it, and it stars Tim Robbins from the Shawshank redeption, doing Pythonesquely silly things. There's also the Hollywood bowl live show, a classic. You could look into the Young Ones, Filthy Rich and Catflap, and Bottom. You might take to Rik Mayal and Ade Edmondson. or even the series they and dozens of other classic UK COmedians started in, Comic Strip Presents. (Robbie Coltrane is in dozens of them and often steals the scenes he's in)
You've probably been over this before. Connie Booth (Polly) was John Cleese's wife during this period. She cowrote many of the episodes as well as wrote and sometimes appear in the Monty Python sketches. Connie was the witch in Holy Grail movie of course. They had a daughter (Cynthia) who appears in both A Fish Called Wanda (along with Michael Palin) and Fierce Creatures. Connie Booth has a part in the comedy High Spirits with a young Liam Neeson and Peter O'Toole.
Love your reactions, the chef in fawlty towers lived in the same road as me, his son was in the year below me at school, and daughter was in my brothers class, sadly he died in the late 1980's, cyer!
Wow, even this Yank knows who Una Stubbs was! She played the daughter on 'Til Death Do Us Part, one of the greatest sitcoms of the BBC, which inspired All in the Family, the greatest sitcom of American television.
Una Stubbs became well known from the 1960s TV comedy series Till Death Us Do Part. She also appeared as the land lady in Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch.
The inclusion of Polly and Manuel in episodes was purely a function of what the plot required. They were only included when needed. By the way, Connie Booth (Polly) co-wrote the series with John Cleese.
The, 'choc ice', quip was due to his finding the whole thing quite entertaining, (like it's some kind of show being put on), and getting a choc ice is something you would have in the intermission when watching a film in a cinema.
there's still some movies to see. Fierce Creatures & Clockwise. Fierce Creatures has the whole Fish Called Wanda cast running a zoo & Clockwise has Cleese as a school headmaster whose life falls apart in an afternoon.
quoted from IMDB: "Basil and Sybil Fawlty were based on Donald and Beatrice Sinclair, genuine hoteliers who ran the 41-bed Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay where John Cleese stayed whilst filming on location in early May 1970 with the Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969) team. Mr Sinclair's irascible antics included: berating Terry Gilliam for eating his meals in "too American" a way (ie. with knife and fork in the 'wrong' hands); throwing Eric Idle's briefcase over a wall because of a "bomb scare" (the scare was that Idle left the briefcase in the reception area); disbelief at Michael Palin asking to pre-book the Gleneagles TV to catch a show; after Graham Chapman requested an omelette made with three eggs, Sinclair brought him an omelet with three fried eggs perched on top (and refused to serve him a brandy); when asked by Cleese to call for a taxi, he argued with Cleese and took his time calling for the cab. Mrs Sinclair later complained that the sit-com had been unfair to her husband, and she described John Cleese as an "utter fool" who had "made millions out of our unhappiness". The Gleneagles Hotel, under new ownership, ran Fawlty Towers weekends once a month where guests were looked after by actors who play the part of Basil, Sybil and Manuel. Opened in 1963, it closed permanently in February 2015, and is to be demolished with retirement apartments built on the site. Cleese later used the name "Donald P. Sinclair" for his eccentric billionaire character in the movie Rat Race (2001)."
After you finish your run of "Fawlty Towers," you should watch the series that Michael Palin and Terry Jones put together after "Monty Python's Flying Circus": "Ripping Yarns," at least the "Tomkinson's School Days" episode.
Connie Booth who played Polly was married to John Cleese and cowrote the series. After they divorced and she stopped acting she went on to to study and became a psychotherapist.
Please seek out if still available, Terry Jones and Mike Palin’s ‘Ripping Yarns’, comedy mini movies based on schoolboy novels (Tom Brown’s Schooldays etc) taken to ridiculous conclusions. In the way that only these Monty Python alumni can. Another short series, as only nine stories were made … Worth it, as so many British comedic actors made cameo appearances. Including John Cleese !
Therr actually was a way out of this... when Basil heard they saw his wife in town he should have acted surprised and declare that she was making a prank on him pretending to be ill and planning something for the anniversary...
After FT, You can go back to more Marx Bros movies. Also I would love to see you watch some Laurel & Hardy shorts (not the movies so much as L&H had no creative control over their movies 😞). One movie exception would be perfect for Christmas - "March of the Wooden Soldiers" (1934).
We laugh with you while you watch our favorites. You wondered "what next?' after FT - how about Black Adder (1st season sucked so hang in there), and Red Dwarf (until season 6). Looking forward to laughing with you.
There are also TH-cam clips of the British TV show Not The 9 O'Clock news, which stars Rowan Atkinson. See the skits "Monty Python Worshipers", and "John McEnroe's Breakfast". Also something not funny that you would be interested in if you haven't seen it is the 1979 Life Of Brian TV debate, where Cleese and Palin argue against a bishop etc. that the movie wasn't blasphemous.
I've seen someone else say it, but I want to echo the sentiment: after you finish Fawlty Towers, check out Blackadder! It is hilarious and it's actually what got me (an American) into British comedy! I'd avoid the first season though. It's enjoyable, but they hadn't figured out the formula yet. Seasons 2-4 are absolutely brilliant though
Now you are nearly finished FT let me suggest 3 Monty Python kind of related series. Ripping Yarns starring Michael Palin, Rutland Weekend Television with Eric Idles and The Innes Book of Records with Neil Innes.
Try watching "an idiot abroad" starring Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and the hilariously funny Karl Pilkington, have a good Christmas and a great new year everyone ✌️
This is one of the less popular episodes in the series, although it is one of John Cleese's favourites, since due to some unusual circumstances they had much longer to rehearse and perfect it. I still found it hard to feel sorry for Sybil, given how she always brushes off Basil's affection and makes his life miserable in other episodes!
Yes - the Marx Brothers - react to them please please please! "A night at the opera" - "A day at the races" - "At the circus" - "Go west" - "Duck soup" Plus (if not already?) ..... "Monty python - Live at the Hollywood bowl"
You're adorable Dawn. We have a kind of choc ice dessert in American called a Klondike Bar. I'm 64 and love them, but have to limit myself to one or two per week. For over four decades now their ad campaign tag line has been "what would you do for a Klondike Bar?" KLONDIKE BAR AD th-cam.com/video/EWhppIwjPVQ/w-d-xo.html
After you finish with Fawlty Towers (and my absolute favorite episode is coming up), I recommend Black Adder. It doesn't have any of the Python crew in it, but it's very funny.
Except for the first season, Black Adder is awesome.
Another comedy series that I think would appeal to Python fans is Father Ted. It's bizarre in a good way.
@@ink-cow How do you feel about "Red Dwarf" or "Bless me Father?"
Yes, Blackadder, but avoid season 1.
Good suggestions. I'd add "Black Books" and "The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy"
If you're wondering what to watch next, try "Ripping Yarns", (Michael Palin), especially "The testing of Eric Olthwaite"

The brunette lady in the floral dress was Una Stubbs a very well-known actress who sadly died last year aged 83
She was Aunt Sally in the original adaptation of Worzel Gummage and she was Mrs Hudson in Sherlock.
I broke out into a huge smile when I saw your video notification come in. I knew what we were in for. Glad you’re enjoying these, Dawn. Thank you for doing them.
Fr Ted is definitely worth a watch. It's like Faulty Towers, not many episodes but it's excellent and timeless.
Definitely. 👍
The final episode is the funniest of the lot starring Manuel’s filigree Siberian hamster ! 😂
I thought it was pedigree.
Don’t you have rats in Spain, or did Franco have them all shot?
You may also enjoy watching "The Young Ones" (12 episodes). John Cleese has said he wished he could have been in it. and if you like that you may also like "Bottom" (18 episodes). :)
At least Terry Jones had a cameo on one episode!
As a Monty Python fan, when he did that I shouted out "Of course I haven't got any choc ice! I've just got this albatros!!"
Loved them both - saw Ken Campbell live, a real one-off. Una was just a joy. Both much missed.
I haven't got choc-ices. I only got the albatross. Albatross!
Mine is “oh don’t smile”. Apparently Ken wasn’t supposed to be in this episode. The original actor cast was no longer available when the recording was rescheduled so Ken stepped in at the last moment. Can’t imagine this episode without him :)
Ken Campbell was married to a stunningly beautiful woman Prunella Gee

Since you love Monty Python, I would suggest Ripping Yarns (Michael Palin) Some are better than others, but very Python-esque
Una Stubbs! She was Mrs. Hudson in BBC's Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch! When she was young, she was a hottie!
Mrs. Taylor was played by Manuel's real-life wife.
Una Stubbs was the actress who played Mrs. Hudson in BBC’s Sherlock.
You've probably been over this before. Connie Booth (Polly) was John Cleese's wife during this period. Every episode is great, but the last one is my favorite. The Siberian hamster or rat tops it all. 🐹🐀
I forgot how funny this episode was, I couldn't stop laughing with you watching it.
Polly telling Basil off is more precious to me than gold.

And Aunt Sally in the original Worzel Gummidge with Jon Pertwee.
That was why it was so good, love. Notwithstanding the script, every one had their own character, even down to the rat !
Ripping Yarns and/or Black Adder next. One of the more recent comedies I really liked (but not sure you've seen already) is Count Arthur Strong.
The inclusion of Polly and Manuel in episodes was purely a function of what the plot required. They were only included when needed. By the way, Connie Booth (Polly) co-wrote the series with John Cleese.
That Mitchell and Webb Situation and The Mitchell and Webb Look. You'll enjoy those.

I am from the North East in the UK and I absolutely love your accent. Love the show as well watched it a good few times the series.
there's still some movies to see. Fierce Creatures & Clockwise. Fierce Creatures has the whole Fish Called Wanda cast running a zoo & Clockwise has Cleese as a school headmaster whose life falls apart in an afternoon.
I am a subscriber of yours and I am glad to give every video of yours a thumbs up. 🙂
After Fawlty towers, I HIGHLY recommend the *IT Crowd* if you still haven't watched it. Amazing piece of British comedy
Best sitcom I've seen in thirty years at least.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
I say that to anyone who is having trouble with their PC
"How To Irritate People" "Adventures of Baron Munchousen"
Basil just can'r help digging his own grave. Even when you think he might be having second thoughts, he's just getting a bigger shovel.
quoted from IMDB: "Basil and Sybil Fawlty were based on Donald and Beatrice Sinclair, genuine hoteliers who ran the 41-bed Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay where John Cleese stayed whilst filming on location in early May 1970 with the Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969) team. If you want something insane, surreal and is very mean but also funny. I would recommend the Young Ones.

Oh, not sure why I hadn't thought of this before, but Steven Moffat's amazing sitcom Coupling is a must watch
I wish there was a season 3, but maybe it's better this way. Maybe it's more special with just 2 seasons.
Therr actually was a way out of this... when Basil heard they saw his wife in town he should have acted surprised and declare that she was making a prank on him pretending to be ill and planning something for the anniversary...

8:23 That was a really stupid decision on Virginia's part. Of course Polly was going to punch her, I would be creeped out too.
Blackadder is another good one with 4 seasons an specials. Like for example Blackadders Christmas Carol just to name one of them.

Yellowbeard is sort of a Monty Python movie.
Ripping Yarns it is then after this.

You still have 10 Marx Brothers films as well as Eric the Viking, Jabberwocky, Yellowbeard and Ripping Yarns.
Dawn was born to react to Fawlty Towers lol
Ohhhhh Merry Christmas you beautiful soul
Hope you watch Ripping Yarns - Michael Palin's series he did after Python 🤩🙌👍
Crying laughing - again.
I know you like Manuel but Major is my fav character from the series...
I hope Poly's puffy legs got back to normal size

I wonder if she knows about the backdoor pilot
I like Allo Allo.
Not a comedy, but I think you'd enjoy a British cop show called "Life on Mars" with John Simms and Phillip Glennister
Don't give a toss about Xmas, it is so phoney.
My next recommendatioons are black Adder, Are you Being Served, Red Dwarf
I would love to work there if it were a real hotel.
I wonder if you’ve ever heard of a Scottish sitcom called Still Game? If you’ve not seen it before I think it’s be worth your attention.

What to do after Fawlty Towers: Father Ted or The IT Crowd
Good stuff Dawn. Please consider the 15 episodes of Mr. Bean.
Or Better yet, Blackadder.
Black Adder next? If you haven't seen it.
Amazing just how many naughty anagrams you can create out of 'Fawlty Towers', isn't it?
A Fish Called Wanda with j cleese
The next one is my favorite
Check out the comedy short film, Romance with a Double Bass (1974) with John Cleese and Connie Booth.
Basil the rat next. In my opinion they saved the best for last.
I vote for "Romance with a Double Bass" next
Next should be A Fish Called Wanda followed by Fierce Creatures.
No, that is not a good movie at all.
