Just bought mine. Everything I've seen on your and other channels convinced me this was the right way to go. I was a bit unsure if I should buy a cheaper one and upgrade later but I decided that this is probably all the drone I'll ever need so went with it. As for your comments about fighting with your wife, I totally get it. I spent many years in the Military and my wife pretty much raised our children by herself, she deserves a medal. Thanks mate. The Mavic definitely has a more cinematic look - I would be curious to see what you could make the Spark look like if you DID color correct the footage.
I watched this in 1080p and even then the image quality of the Mavic is far superior. Not just the sharpness, but the color and dynamic range is much better. The Spark seemed a little washed out and smudgy. It looked like it was 720p upscaled to 1080p. I know it wasn't but it didnt llok good if that's it's native resolution. Possibly it's compressing the video too much, degrading the quality. I wonder if you can set the recording bitrate for it.
I agree. The Spark is impressive for its size and great for the price, but the justification for the cost of each drone is evident in the image quality.

This review is fantastic! Im getting a Spark for my Christmas present, picking it up tomorrow! I've been making videos for about 10 years as a hobby and never have I owned a drone. All I needed and wanted to know was provided in this review. In the future, when I consider myself at a more professional level, I will be getting a mavic, maybe wait for the mavic 2. A lot of other youtubers, that I highly respect, were saying how it wasn't even worth buying and don't waste your money. They compared it to a phantom 4 and a mavic pro, which lets be honest, we all know the footage from those drones are way more crisp and clean then of the Spark (4k). But they really trashed on it and I thought they did terrible at explaining the drones target audience. Now you sir, you explained all of your thoughts about the Spark in a positive way throughout this review and explained its target audience! THANK YOU! People need to know that this is entry drone can still do shit and get it done at a very good quality! Sure its not as good as the Mavic, but people who are new to flying drones don't wanna go pay $1000 for a Mavic and crash it because they don't know what the hell they are doing. Practice and work really gets you places and I think the Spark is fantastic for that! Thanks again Casey for a positive and honest review! That's why I and others respect you, because you are honest. One more big thing to consider for us Europeans, there's rather strict legal restrictions and most drones need you to get a license and mandatory insurance. Depending on country of course. I would've spent the 900€ on a mavic, but I don't wanna go through the annually required fuss and cost of having the license to do so, so the Spark with the light weight, passing under those regulations basically is a good way to get into drone filming.
charliejoeralph Then the FAA threatened him 25000$ per video he flew illegally. (all of them) so now he's trying to follow the rules even though this flight was also illegal unless he had permission to fly over all those buildings.
Wrong, The FAA did an investigation finding lots of faults in his videos. However, they could not prove who was in control of the remote during the illegal activity so they did nothing. He was and or has been threatened by DJI that he may lose any and all sponsorships with them if he continued to operate dangerously. So in other words, if you make the company enough money and can afford a decent attorney they won't do anything to you for breaking the law.
In my country a series of "drone incidents" near airports made the authorities to obligate drone users to register them on the national aviation authority, receiving a "tail number" and mandatory insurance. Is it the same in america, for instance? I've always seen kasey's flights and wondered about the freedom of flight.

That was pretty impressive. I love both. Kinda would like to see a performance and video quality comparison between the Dji spark and Mavic air as Im in the market for a high quality video drone. Probably will be the smallest rc bird in my collection.
Nice fair review of the two drones Casey. I bought my DJi Mavic Pro after watching your review of it and I can say that I'm really satisfied, especially with the image quality. Though I agree that with regards to control, DJi Spark is better. Bless you for sneezing in front of the camera! lol
The Mavic is waaay better. Considering the price difference is just $300, the Mavic definitely wins in my opinion. Huge range, double the flight time and a better quality camera is completely justifiable for the extra 300.

Hi Great review Casey. BTW I spent 14 yrs in the Royal Navy being away from the family sucks. Thank goodness I had an understanding wife too, but saying that, when I left the Navy it was hard for the first year or so 'cos of not being together all the time, she had her ways I had mine but we stuck it out and worked on it. It's not whether you're a novice or an expert at flying. A novice can fly a phantom 4 pro just as easily as a Spark. It's really about what you're buying it for and then what you already have in your arsenal to compare it to. If you're aiming to make cinematic content and you're already using a 20+ megapixel DSLR, your drone footage won't be on par with the rest of your footage if you're using a 12 MP spark.
It's subjective to what your goal is and what kind of budget you have. If you're trying to go the high quality route on a low(er) budget, you don't want to buy this outdated tech to "practice" on just to replace it and spend even more in a few months to get something better because the footage isn't up to par with the rest of your equipment. The phantom 4 pro is arguably easier to fly with the numerous sensors and the quality is WORLDS ahead of the Spark. Novice/expert argument isn't really a valid argument with something that is so simple to fly. The spark is great for someone on a very low budget looking to add some type of aerial footage to their library, or someone with the disposable money to have a cheap drone to toy around with. But if you're looking for professional imagery and can only afford one, the spark is by no means a professional piece of equipment. Get the mavic or better.

Jerome Skorzec The next question that comes is "do you want to stay a dude with lower quality holiday drone footage and no manual control of the camera"? If not, opt for spending the extra XXX dollars on something with 4x the pixel density otherwise you'll be doing it in the near future when you're disappointed by your spark. Anything low light with the spark is going to look atrocious.
The Detherage Dialect It is to be expected though when you buy the Spark. Of course your not gonna get a camera that is extremely good in any lighting situation, but the average Spark customer doesn't really need that anyways, because this is a consumer-friendly drone. It's just not made for professional filmmaking stuff, just as a companion on your hike, bike trip or as a small gadget to simply have fun with ^^
You could say the same about the mavic with a much better image quality. They're about the same size. I'm just saying that buying a Spark for making videos is like buying a 1080p monitor for PC gaming. It's already dated tech in the realm of media. As a cool toy? Sure. For 700 dollars only to be the only drone in your arsenal? No. Based on his channel it looks like he would fare much better spending the extra money to get a better piece of equipment that will last longer from a technical standpoint.
I got the same drone with 3 batteries and controller basically brand new for 300$ so if people want it you can definitely get it for a lot cheaper now than what it was when it first came out.

Some would say that the love I have for my DJI Spark is unnatural. One of my favorite things about it is how unassuming it is. People aren't freaked out by it like they are with the larger drones. That's definitely a plus. Most people just assume its like a toy drone. As someone who just does this for fun to get cool photos and videos this purchase was a total success. I used it to get some great photos of my company summer party last week and got some great stuff to use in end of the year Christmas slideshow. The thing is super responsive and every time I've flown it out of range it comes right back with no issues. This thing is just great. I would love to have a Mavik but honestly for my use case the spark is perfect.
If you want a little bit better image quality for about $200 less than the cost of the spark, check out the Phantom 3 Standard. I flew it for a year and loved it. Honestly a great drone for the price, and I think it could beat out the spark in almost every aspect, except ease of storage.
Tyler VandenBrand The main factor for me is how practical it is and easy to take to places. The phantoms have massive cases and you need a seperate bag for them, you can't just put it in a back pack with all your other stuff.

Charging by microusb must be very unefficient and take quite a long time, because it can only pull 2A at 5V and has to boost it up to 12V. This means you need to have about 10 000mAh powerbank for one charge of dji spark.

Caseys' choice of music is consistently very good - He has a good sense for what will age well. If you watch the credits you also know it's pretty common for someone else to do the mix - it's good exposure for them.

I got mine last week, first video a bit so-so but i just flew it out of the box and have done no editing. I can see getting to grips with that will make a big difference. When you look at what some people have achieved post production it's quite impressive. YES i would like a mavic 2 zoom and a phantom 4 come to think about it. BUT with no cash and no real experience i feel the spark will do nicely while i get to grips with editing etc and save up for a more capable bird. Jesus, why am i writing all this, i have gone quite mad. *QUAD*

I think the difference pops out when you compare side by side. Only when you look at spark alone it looks good. I love photography, wish it could shoot RAW (that’s where considered Bebop 2). Ordered spark spark with controller for $340 on ebay. Portability is one of my main criteria.
The spark video, to me, looks more washed out. I did notice less "tearing" in the Spark video vs the Mavic, but that could be any number of things not related to the drone itself (shitty hotel wifi being one such possibility)
I have both the Spark and the Mavic Pro. The Spark isn't even comparable to the Mavic. Here's why: The Spark has literally half of Everything the Mavic has...(maybe even less) First of all, the obstacles avoidance max range of spark is only 5 m (16ft) compared to 15 (48ft) of Mavic. Which means it cannot sense obstacles that are far away.. Also the Spark *Cannot avoid obstacles if it is further than 100 metres (320 ft) away from your Home Point which could result in a crash* if your RTH is not set high enough. The reason is because Spark Infrared obstacle avoidance sensor's FOV is very narrow so it can only avoid obstacles when flying very slowly (about 9 MPH / 14 KMH) It also cannot avoid obstacles automatically, it just hovers in front of an obstacle unlike the mavic which would move left or right to avoid any obstacles as the mavic has a higher quality 3D sensor. Secondly, the Mavic has twice as many Sensors compared to the spark. Whereas, Spark only a 1 of each which might cause your Spark to fly away if there are interference. These Sensors are Barometer, Accelerometer, gyroscope and *most importantly, the Compass* Thirdly Spark cannot auto land as the downward Vision sensor *is not* 3D (it can only "see" using one camera and an infrared sensor which can only measure distance between the Spark and the ground) Fourthly, the Mavic's propulsion system is over powered and is very efficient while Spark is slightly underpowered and not that efficient which could easily get blown away by a strong wind. It's also as loud as the mavic. I occasionally get the "Max motor Speed" message with the Spark but have not even once experience this with my mavic. Also, the Mavic is more aerodynamic when flying due to the 12° tilt of the front and back motors. Fifth, the gimbal is only 2 Axis compared to 3 axis on the Mavic. (very noticeable when in photo mode) Furthermore, not only is the camera on the Mavic 4K, it has a Bitrate of 60Mbps compared to 1080p @ 24 Mbps on the spark. You can also change the video resolutions and the framerate for the Mavic which is otherwise not possible on the spark. Six, the Mavic has ocusync which means it can resist *much* more interference and doesn't glitch out as the remote controls signals and video signals are separately transmitted. The Spark just have Wifi technology which is very prone to interference and quite unreliable. Mavic's max range is about 7.3 KM (8000 yards) while Spark is only 1.2 KM (1300 yards) in real world test. 7. The Mavic battery is placed on top which means it is very unlikely it's going to fall out but the Spark's battery is at the bottom which could very likely fall out as it could shake itself out (remember those Sparks that fell out of the sky like a rock....) The Spark can only last 12 minutes on average compared to 21 minutes on the Mavic. 8. As I've said before, the Spark *only* has one camera at the bottom for the actual VPS so it's unreliable when there's no GPS (keeps switching to ATTI mode). The Mavic uses *both* the downward Vision sensor *AND* the forward vision sensor for VPS (consisting of 4 cameras in total) so even if there isn't GPS, the Mavic just flies like a charm. 9. The remotes on the Mavic has an LCD screen which is *extremely helpful* when the Dji GO 4 app crashes. You still can see all the important flight telemetry even without a phone. 10. Many Birds are not intimidated by the spark and they can easily knock it out of the sky. Had a close call with a seagull.. *Pros of Spark:* 10. Gesture Control is really awesome if you want to control it with just your hand to take selfie without touching any controls. 11. Spark brings less attention and setup is slightly faster as you don't have to remove the gimbal clamp and cover or unfold the arms. 12. Spark is much lighter and easier to carry even with an additional battery. I bring it with me everywhere! All in all; *The spark is not even made to compete with the Mavic, it's an entirely different drone for a different purpose. This was just my opinion about the two drones* Here's how I use both drones: I bring the Spark everywhere all of the time with me for capturing those unexpectedly amazingly beautiful places while I leave the Mavic in the car ready for more professional/clearer/higher quality shots. There you go, I probably shouldn't have written so long but I felt the need to explain everything since some people are surprisingly stuck between the Spark and the Mavic..

That does not improve anything. Interesting to know is that when you'd do that to a TH-cam video, TH-cam allows a more mild compression on the video you uploaded therefore having a increase in image quality. This is off course because of the compression that TH-cam uses.

I don't think upscaling it and then downscaling it again is very good for quality. I think it's better if you don't upscale it.

This review is fantastic! Im getting a Spark for my Christmas present, picking it up tomorrow! I've been making videos for about 10 years as a hobby and never have I owned a drone. All I needed and wanted to know was provided in this review. In the future, when I consider myself at a more professional level, I will be getting a mavic, maybe wait for the mavic 2. A lot of other youtubers, that I highly respect, were saying how it wasn't even worth buying and don't waste your money. They compared it to a phantom 4 and a mavic pro, which lets be honest, we all know the footage from those drones are way more crisp and clean then of the Spark (4k). But they really trashed on it and I thought they did terrible at explaining the drones target audience. Now you sir, you explained all of your thoughts about the Spark in a positive way throughout this review and explained its target audience! THANK YOU! People need to know that this is entry drone can still do shit and get it done at a very good quality! Sure its not as good as the Mavic, but people who are new to flying drones don't wanna go pay $1000 for a Mavic and crash it because they don't know what the hell they are doing. Practice and work really gets you places and I think the Spark is fantastic for that! Thanks again Casey for a positive and honest review! That's why I and others respect you, because you are honest. One more big thing to consider for us Europeans, there's rather strict legal restrictions and most drones need you to get a license and mandatory insurance. Depending on country of course. I would've spent the 900€ on a mavic, but I don't wanna go through the annually required fuss and cost of having the license to do so, so the Spark with the light weight, passing under those regulations basically is a good way to get into drone filming.
I got mine 4 days ago, and I love it, it’s small enough that people don’t look at it any more than as a toy, they don’t get scared of it.

Wrong, The FAA did an investigation finding lots of faults in his videos. However, they could not prove who was in control of the remote during the illegal activity so they did nothing. He was and or has been threatened by DJI that he may lose any and all sponsorships with them if he continued to operate dangerously. So in other words, if you make the company enough money and can afford a decent attorney they won't do anything to you for breaking the law.
In my country a series of "drone incidents" near airports made the authorities to obligate drone users to register them on the national aviation authority, receiving a "tail number" and mandatory insurance. Is it the same in america, for instance? I've always seen kasey's flights and wondered about the freedom of flight.

Nice fair review of the two drones Casey. I bought my DJi Mavic Pro after watching your review of it and I can say that I'm really satisfied, especially with the image quality. Though I agree that with regards to control, DJi Spark is better. Bless you for sneezing in front of the camera! lol

The Mavic is waaay better. Considering the price difference is just $300, the Mavic definitely wins in my opinion. Huge range, double the flight time and a better quality camera is completely justifiable for the extra 300.

BTW I spent 14 yrs in the Royal Navy being away from the family sucks. Thank goodness I had an understanding wife too, but saying that, when I left the Navy it was hard for the first year or so 'cos of not being together all the time, she had her ways I had mine but we stuck it out and worked on it. It's not whether you're a novice or an expert at flying. A novice can fly a phantom 4 pro just as easily as a Spark. It's really about what you're buying it for and then what you already have in your arsenal to compare it to. If you're aiming to make cinematic content and you're already using a 20+ megapixel DSLR, your drone footage won't be on par with the rest of your footage if you're using a 12 MP spark.
It's subjective to what your goal is and what kind of budget you have. If you're trying to go the high quality route on a low(er) budget, you don't want to buy this outdated tech to "practice" on just to replace it and spend even more in a few months to get something better because the footage isn't up to par with the rest of your equipment. The phantom 4 pro is arguably easier to fly with the numerous sensors and the quality is WORLDS ahead of the Spark. Novice/expert argument isn't really a valid argument with something that is so simple to fly. The spark is great for someone on a very low budget looking to add some type of aerial footage to their library, or someone with the disposable money to have a cheap drone to toy around with. But if you're looking for professional imagery and can only afford one, the spark is by no means a professional piece of equipment. Get the mavic or better.

Jerome Skorzec The next question that comes is "do you want to stay a dude with lower quality holiday drone footage and no manual control of the camera"? If not, opt for spending the extra XXX dollars on something with 4x the pixel density otherwise you'll be doing it in the near future when you're disappointed by your spark. Anything low light with the spark is going to look atrocious.

Of course your not gonna get a camera that is extremely good in any lighting situation, but the average Spark customer doesn't really need that anyways, because this is a consumer-friendly drone. It's just not made for professional filmmaking stuff, just as a companion on your hike, bike trip or as a small gadget to simply have fun with ^^
You could say the same about the mavic with a much better image quality. They're about the same size. I'm just saying that buying a Spark for making videos is like buying a 1080p monitor for PC gaming. It's already dated tech in the realm of media. As a cool toy? Sure. For 700 dollars only to be the only drone in your arsenal? No. Based on his channel it looks like he would fare much better spending the extra money to get a better piece of equipment that will last longer from a technical standpoint.

Some would say that the love I have for my DJI Spark is unnatural. One of my favorite things about it is how unassuming it is. People aren't freaked out by it like they are with the larger drones. That's definitely a plus. Most people just assume its like a toy drone. As someone who just does this for fun to get cool photos and videos this purchase was a total success. I used it to get some great photos of my company summer party last week and got some great stuff to use in end of the year Christmas slideshow. The thing is super responsive and every time I've flown it out of range it comes right back with no issues. This thing is just great. I would love to have a Mavik but honestly for my use case the spark is perfect.

If you want a little bit better image quality for about $200 less than the cost of the spark, check out the Phantom 3 Standard. I flew it for a year and loved it. Honestly a great drone for the price, and I think it could beat out the spark in almost every aspect, except ease of storage.

Charging by microusb must be very unefficient and take quite a long time, because it can only pull 2A at 5V and has to boost it up to 12V.
This means you need to have about 10 000mAh powerbank for one charge of dji spark.

I got mine last week, first video a bit so-so but i just flew it out of the box and have done no editing. I can see getting to grips with that will make a big difference. When you look at what some people have achieved post production it's quite impressive. YES i would like a mavic 2 zoom and a phantom 4 come to think about it. BUT with no cash and no real experience i feel the spark will do nicely while i get to grips with editing etc and save up for a more capable bird. Jesus, why am i writing all this, i have gone quite mad. *QUAD*

I think the difference pops out when you compare side by side. Only when you look at spark alone it looks good. I love photography, wish it could shoot RAW (that’s where considered Bebop 2). Ordered spark spark with controller for $340 on ebay. Portability is one of my main criteria.

The spark video, to me, looks more washed out. I did notice less "tearing" in the Spark video vs the Mavic, but that could be any number of things not related to the drone itself (shitty hotel wifi being one such possibility)
I have both the Spark and the Mavic Pro. The Spark isn't even comparable to the Mavic.
Here's why: The Spark has literally half of Everything the Mavic has...(maybe even less)
First of all, the obstacles avoidance max range of spark is only 5 m (16ft) compared to 15 (48ft) of Mavic. Which means it cannot sense obstacles that are far away.. Also the Spark *Cannot avoid obstacles if it is further than 100 metres (320 ft) away from your Home Point which could result in a crash* if your RTH is not set high enough. The reason is because Spark Infrared obstacle avoidance sensor's FOV is very narrow so it can only avoid obstacles when flying very slowly (about 9 MPH / 14 KMH) It also cannot avoid obstacles automatically, it just hovers in front of an obstacle unlike the mavic which would move left or right to avoid any obstacles as the mavic has a higher quality 3D sensor.
Secondly, the Mavic has twice as many Sensors compared to the spark. Whereas, Spark only a 1 of each which might cause your Spark to fly away if there are interference. These Sensors are Barometer, Accelerometer, gyroscope and *most importantly, the Compass*
Thirdly Spark cannot auto land as the downward Vision sensor *is not* 3D (it can only "see" using one camera and an infrared sensor which can only measure distance between the Spark and the ground)
Fourthly, the Mavic's propulsion system is over powered and is very efficient while Spark is slightly underpowered and not that efficient which could easily get blown away by a strong wind. It's also as loud as the mavic. I occasionally get the "Max motor Speed" message with the Spark but have not even once experience this with my mavic. Also, the Mavic is more aerodynamic when flying due to the 12° tilt of the front and back motors.
Fifth, the gimbal is only 2 Axis compared to 3 axis on the Mavic. (very noticeable when in photo mode) Furthermore, not only is the camera on the Mavic 4K, it has a Bitrate of 60Mbps compared to 1080p @ 24 Mbps on the spark. You can also change the video resolutions and the framerate for the Mavic which is otherwise not possible on the spark.
Six, the Mavic has ocusync which means it can resist *much* more interference and doesn't glitch out as the remote controls signals and video signals are separately transmitted. The Spark just have Wifi technology which is very prone to interference and quite unreliable. Mavic's max range is about 7.3 KM (8000 yards) while Spark is only 1.2 KM (1300 yards) in real world test.
7. The Mavic battery is placed on top which means it is very unlikely it's going to fall out but the Spark's battery is at the bottom which could very likely fall out as it could shake itself out (remember those Sparks that fell out of the sky like a rock....) The Spark can only last 12 minutes on average compared to 21 minutes on the Mavic.
8. As I've said before, the Spark *only* has one camera at the bottom for the actual VPS
so it's unreliable when there's no GPS (keeps switching to ATTI mode). The Mavic uses *both* the downward Vision sensor *AND* the forward vision sensor for VPS (consisting of 4 cameras in total) so even if there isn't GPS, the Mavic just flies like a charm.
9. The remotes on the Mavic has an LCD screen which is *extremely helpful* when the Dji GO 4 app crashes. You still can see all the important flight telemetry even without a phone.
10. Many Birds are not intimidated by the spark and they can easily knock it out of the sky. Had a close call with a seagull..
*Pros of Spark:*
10. Gesture Control is really awesome if you want to control it with just your hand to take selfie without touching any controls.
11. Spark brings less attention and setup is slightly faster as you don't have to remove the gimbal clamp and cover or unfold the arms.
12. Spark is much lighter and easier to carry even with an additional battery. I bring it with me everywhere!
All in all; *The spark is not even made to compete with the Mavic, it's an entirely different drone for a different purpose. This was just my opinion about the two drones*
Here's how I use both drones: I bring the Spark everywhere all of the time with me for capturing those unexpectedly amazingly beautiful places while I leave the Mavic in the car ready for more professional/clearer/higher quality shots.
There you go, I probably shouldn't have written so long but I felt the need to explain everything since some people are surprisingly stuck between the Spark and the Mavic..

That does not improve anything. Interesting to know is that when you'd do that to a TH-cam video, TH-cam allows a more mild compression on the video you uploaded therefore having a increase in image quality. This is off course because of the compression that TH-cam uses.
