L.D.50 is one of the most innovative metal albums ever... even outside of Nu Metal. Mudvayne were on another level when writing this album. They mixed a progressive and nu metal sound with funky basslines and a sort of alienlike concept, while having dark lyrics about death, suicide etc.. I can only name a few other bands that have done as much within the genre as Mudvayne. Ryan Martinie is the bass player and he is one of the most passionate musicians out there, and you can hear that in his work. Also the title of "L.D.50" stands for "Lethal Dosage" which is a median dosage that kills 50% a tested population, so to me I interpret the ideas of duality, suicide, and evolutionary hallucinogens to be connected to that
Great points, this album is extremely innovative just in how it is so strangely cohesive. Nothing sounds out of place despite the blending of bizarre and varying sounds. I actually looked up the meaning of L.D. 50's name and figured out the lethal dosage thing, now the last track name makes sense. I find it really interesting that the beginning tracks all deal with physical form and our biology and evolution as a species (Monolith, Dig, Internal Primates Forever) and it ends with tracks such as Under My Skin, Pharmacopeia, and Lethal Dosage. Kind of symbolic of the progression from our birth as a species to our death, maybe? Definitely a lot of duality/opposing elements thematically across this album.
If you all like the LD 50-era sound try The Root Of Man, by Anti-Clone and The Hydra's Tailor, by Deadly Circus Fire. For Something truly undergound check out the album Where The Wasteland Ends, by Blatherskite. That one has elements of Wide Eye Panic, Opus Dai, Numic, 10 Years, Fair To Midland, and Dredg in there as well.
A fun moment was "Death Blooms" winning a VMA over Eminem's "Stan". The band dressed in tuxedos and had fake bullet wounds in their foreheads. In retrospect Eminem became a pop culture icon and "Stan" is both one of his most celebrated songs as well as a byword for an obsessive fan, but at that moment it felt like such a win for the metal community
Pharmaecopia, and specifically the chorus is my favorite thing on this album. I never get tired of hearing it. Beautiful. L.D.50 is such a special album.
YES!! Death Blooms is such a beautiful and incredible track. It's everything I love about Mudvayne and that melodic part is my favorite aspect of the song for sure.
I remember buying this CD along with Marilyn Manson's Holy Wood album in 2001 and then hiding them from my parents 😂 I love reliving the memories of that time period when I was in high school. It's great to hear the songs through fresh ears again watching you. Great reaction Molly! 😊
These are my boys from Illinoize. It's so cool that a band from a middle sized city 45 minutes away made it so big. That said, can't wait to hear what you think of the album! Cheers.
I love how you’re hitting so many of my favorite albums/bands from my high school years that I still jam to. Gotta love when I get recommended a channel that feels tailored specifically to me. Keep it up!
I was addicted to this when it came out, and still love it now. I saw them on the tour cycle for this record and met the vocalist. They were unreal live.
Thanks for reviewing this album, well done and well put together. I always forget how great this album is then I hear the deeper tracks on it and remember how well done it is. Underrated album, should have been more popular.
I think I ended up seeing Mudvayne in concert something like 8 or 9 times but only intentionally twice. They seemed to be one of the opening acts for every concert we went to back circa the early 2000s. I think after show 4 I finally broke down and bought LD 50 and it turned out to be one of the better recordings of the era. Within the genre they had a pretty distinct sound but I really do think Ryan's bass playing is the highlight of that album. Great observations, it's fun to re-experience and re-contextual this music through another person's experience. I know nu-metal experienced what every emergent genre does with oversaturation leading to a less than favourable opinion of the music in retrospect, but there are some genuine gems in there. LD 50 has to be one of them.
I agree on your point about the bass, it's probably my favorite part of L.D. 50 as well. It's so groovy and addictive, it adds an extra element to this record that really elevates its sound even more. I think the fact that I was too young during the peak of the "nu metal era" is why this music is so appealing to me now. It sounds so fresh and new to my ears! Since I never got exposed to it growing up it didn't become oversaturated to me. I'm happy I'm finally discovering this genre though!
I'm about a hour from where they were formed and I got to see them when they went on tour in their hometown ( Peoria IL) earlier this year when they reformed. It was one of the most unreal experiences I've ever felt. I would have never thought that I would had the chance to see mudvayne until I did. It took me about a week to realize that was the band that was and will probably be a one time thing and I'm absolutely blessed that I get to say that I've seen this band live in their hometown !
LD is a phenomenal masterpiece in my opinion. Everything is literally perfect. The writing, arrangements and vocals are just so good. So we'll written and executed. It's clear that the band had some kind of statement to make with this album and it worked. Definitely a 10/10 from me.
Your channel is a great example on how to do well produced professional and transformative reaction/review content. Your work is very admirable, amazing job as usual!
This entire album is insanely good… but the music from tracks 7 through the end of the album is some of the best NuMetal music ever. I know NuMetal gets a lot of crap from music snobs, but what I always admired most about it WAS it’s simplicity. You don’t have to be a very good guitar player (per se) to be able to jam along to this. Really was a good time for music. My two cents… ❤️🤘
I always called the song "Negative 1." I actually had to go to four of their concerts to see them one time because of cancelations, being late, etc... but when I finally got to see them -1 was the first song they played. Their second record is really good too.
I like how you mentioned the bass. Me and a friend of mine were a fan of it when listening to it as teens. There was also this news article, back in the day, where it said: the bass player chose to use a Warwick bass. Ofcourse we didn't really know what that meant but we linked it to the slap-bassy, groovy sound that the bass player produced during songs. And took it to mean that. All of that stuff combined with the odd appearance and image Mudvayne used to have (the facepaint, the weird hair.. the alien/demonic look during live performances. Even changing their real names to odd and obscure names on the album cover that sounded alien) that made it to was for us in those days. It just had a new edge to it. It was different from your standard NU-metal (which was what a lot of metal bands tried to achieve in that era. It had to be as good as the established NU metal bands but with a very unique signature no one else had). Some even called the style "Math metal" due to its more rhythmic approach with hints of industrial sounds here and there. (Ofcourse I didn't know what that meant either as a teen. So I just used it as information to sound clever about music. :P I wouldn't even know how to explain it to you today) Still though. Part of my youth. Kind of cool! :D thanks for reacting
Great comment! I definitely plan on checking out some of their music videos and live performances now, from what little I've seen so far their stage presence and appearance certainly is unique! Glad you enjoyed the reaction :)
It's the stoned ape theory. They theorize that early hominids followed herds of large grazing animals, and would pick through their dung looking for insects to eat and found psilocybin mushrooms growing in it and eat them, and them being a psychedelic it woke up parts of the brain that they weren't able to access before, and that is what sped up human evolution.
I got this album as a kid after seeing them open for someone and loved the drums. On the song Cradle in the middle there's this little 10-15 second breakdown that was way ahead of its time, every instrument. there was really some genius bits & pieces in this album but id be lying if I said I listened to it much. Molly likes the bass lines a lot and listening again I agree it does sound awesome. We've come a long way modern pop doesn't have a lot of dudes mastering stringed instruments no more =(

I love your channel and your reaction Molly!! I love nu metal and alternative metal. it's too interesting what it says in Monolith, how hallucinogens (psychedelics) helped to our evolution. I read about how magic mushrooms gave to humans the language. I think that is said in Monolith too. I wish recommend u Spiritbox, Eternal Blue album or, if u prefer, begin with heir EP from 2017, their Singles Collection (considering Rule of Nines and Blessed Be, in vinyl are both) and then Eternal Blue. Saludos from Chile!
Great job with this! You definitely picked up on a lot of the albums themes. I also appreciate you actually critically analyze the music. Seems like you have some background in music theory. Its not just most metal reactions of "wow this is loud and crazy!!"
Aw thank you so much! I do not have any experience in music theory, I just love listening to all kinds of stuff and trying to convey how it makes me feel. I'm so happy you're enjoying the reactions :)
Loved this album when it came out. Rhythmically and sonically there was nothing like it. My friends and I compared it to a mix of Tool and Slipknot only because we had nothing else for reference. Definitely a unique and awesome album.
Terrance McKenna is the dude talking about evaluation and tripping. He was a philosopher who believed that psychological made us grow as a species (among other things too). He sadly died of some form of cancer. His brother still does stuff.
@@mollyesanborn Now i recommend you to watch the music video for Dig, just to picture how much fun/passion the band had while making the record. The video for Death Blooms is also pretty chilling.
Someone else suggested that so I actually have seen the Dig video, it's pretty wild! I love all of their crazy visuals. Now I'll have to check out the Death Blooms video.
Death blooms for the win. When this album was new, I was stuck in a basement, on an air force, in Alaska, having to clean phones. When death blooms hit, I left that song on repeat for 2 weeks.
L.D. 50 is a classic, one of the greatest albums to come from the nu metal scene (even though Dig became kind of a meme through the years lol), I'm glad you enjoyed it ^^ and yeah, Ryan Martinie is one hell of a bass player, one of the most inventive and gifted musicians I've ever heard, his bass lines are super fun to listen to!
Perfect review for this album I heard it a while back not a bad album very different but It does stand out especially the way they handle the bass I'll say.. Very In your face type metal!!! 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥
Subbed over this video alone! Gonna be diving into your catalog, but love seeing someone actually doing full dives into entire albums of some of these older bands! Great break downs of the jams, and also, "nothing to gein" is about the serial killer Ed Gein, inspiration for Texas chainsaw massacre, and countless other horror movies. Fantastic video, and I'm looking forward to the rest I'll be binging over the next couple weeks
this was one of the first albums i owned. so good. call me a boomer but i think they dont make em like they used to lol. i have some recommendations that are probably underrated/unheard of that i think would be awesome. first album being, flaw - through the eyes. second album, korn - untouchables
I'm not familiar with Flaw, I'll definitely add that album to my list. And Untouchables by Korn is definitely one I'll get to as well, can't wait to hear it!
Mudvayne is a band I haven’t listened to quite much, this album is legendary. I know after this album they get much more melodic, ‘Happy?’ Is an example, wonderful song just so different
ld50 was one of my favorite albums ever. it was so creative, experimental and different. I have wore my cd out over the years. btw gein is referring to the murderer Ed gein.
Check out the band Ceremony from first to latest album. They change their sound a lot. Violence Violence, their first album, is such a punch to the face and would like to see your reaction to them.
@@mollyesanborn Gift and Plead The Fifth are pretty great albums by Taproot, but I'd highly recommend their 3rd album Blue-Sky Research as it's probably the perfect blend of their overall sound.
While I like all of the albums that follow this album I feel like they really don't have what makes this one special. They kinda lean more into a more mainstream sound on all their other albums. This album just really is amazing and I really wish they would have stuck with its core sound on following albums. There's actually an album before this one and its imo not their best. I definitely think you should do all their albums in order (maybe do their first album or demo or whatever they consider it to be later after their last album) but the closest to this album is probably their last album imo but for me none of their other albums come close to how I feel about this one. Great reaction!
I'm not sure if I'll do reactions to all of Mudvayne's stuff but I'll absolutely give their entire discography a listen now, including that first demo. I'm really curious to hear more from them!
The worst mistake whoever produced and mixed their next albums was turning down Ryan’s bass, he’s one of the best bassists in the genre!
@@andick00 it wasn't necessarily Ryan that changed the whole theme and music in every way changed. Ryan Martinie is still sick in all of the albums.

@@mollyesanborncheck please primus - Brown album i promise you will love this album!) and i wish that you wiil listen to korn's requiem. It's veru interesting to hear an opinion about this album from a person Who doesnt know entire discography! Btw thanks for your answer) it's made my day much better)
I'll make sure that the Primus album is on my list! And I'll get to Requiem eventually, although I think I'm gonna keep going in order with Korn so it'll be the last Korn video I do. I'll get to it eventually though!
Hands down, one of the best albums in the whole metal genre.
Is and always has been in my top 5 albums of all time. Absolutely amazing from start to finish.
Had the chance see the band live in ozzfest in 2005. I wish the band would get back together. Amazing live set and yes the bassist is really good
Awesome reaction as always. This album just hits different. Thanks for the great content!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video :D
i love this album so much ty ❤
I love your reactions keep up the great work🤘🏻
Thank you :)
Terrance McKenna is the dude talking about evaluation and tripping. He was a philosopher who believed that psychological made us grow as a species (among other things too). He sadly died of some form of cancer. His brother still does stuff.
Psychedelics *...whoops
Hmm interesting stuff! Thanks for explaining.
I was sooo hyped for this reaction. I'm glad you liked it!
Yeah, L.D. 50 is great! Glad you all suggested it to me :)
Yeah, that bass is so unique!
@@mollyesanborn 🤘🏾🤟🏾💯🔥
Death Blooms is my favorite!!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵
Very easily within my top 4 albums all-time
I caught them touring this album on the Merry Mayhem Tour, in December ’01, out in Woosta, w/ Rob Zombie and Ozzy headlining!
We need more Mudvayne please! Love from germany
Thanks!! Glad you found the channel and are enjoying the videos so far :)
One of the greats down, now do Chimaira "Impossibility of Reason". Another great album!
OOOOOF YES!
My favourite album of all time for a number or reasons I can't even explain
:O Mudvayne - LD50. Okay. You got me. I'm in!
The bass IS just awesome!
YES!
this was one of the first albums i owned. so good. call me a boomer but i think they dont make em like they used to lol. i have some recommendations that are probably underrated/unheard of that i think would be awesome. first album being, flaw - through the eyes. second album, korn - untouchables
I'm not familiar with Flaw, I'll definitely add that album to my list. And Untouchables by Korn is definitely one I'll get to as well, can't wait to hear it!
LD 50 is an absolute masterpiece!!
Internal Primates Forever is the best fucking song on this album in my opinion
Just discovered you and I've got to say I love your channel and have subscribed! I grew up listening to a lot of these albums
Awesome, welcome to the channel! Glad you're enjoying the videos :)
you got all of it, best video on youtube, thank you
❤️
My 2nd all time fav album! Only behind toxicity
Ah yeah, Toxicity is a worthy #1. LD. 50 is pretty awesome too though!
@@mollyesanborn definitely
Mudvayne is a band I haven’t listened to quite much, this album is legendary. I know after this album they get much more melodic, ‘Happy?’ Is an example, wonderful song just so different
Incubus ‘Science’ album would probably catch your interest as well.
I'm definitely planning a SCIENCE reaction at some point, hopefully soon. Can't wait to hear that one!
Happy? is a great song love singing it
Haven't heard the album in full thanks for this
Thanks for watching! :)
Definetly one of the greatest nu metal albums, timeless... Thanks
I loved this album when it came out. It ain't my thing anymore really but it's cool to hear your thoughts on it!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video!
ld50 was one of my favorite albums ever. it was so creative, experimental and different. I have wore my cd out over the years. btw gein is referring to the murderer Ed gein.
Love Mudvayne...
Iced Earth - The Glorious Burden ( Gettysburg)
1. The Devil To Pay
2. Hold At All Costs
3. Highwater Mark
Check out the band Ceremony from first to latest album. They change their sound a lot. Violence Violence, their first album, is such a punch to the face and would like to see your reaction to them.
🤘MUDVAYNE🤘
Space between a blink and a tear....... Death Blooms... so glad you heard this album, this is one of my favorites
To me, the album starts at track 3.
I got this album when it was new, and even then I was over “Dig”, especially after I heard the rest of the album.
this sounds like a really nice album, gonna check it out!
You DEFINITELY should, L.D. 50 is awesome!
Time for Korn's Follow the Leader. I'm excited for you, next few Korn albums are special. Your in for a treat.
I'm so pumped to hear Follow The Leader, I'll plan on doing that reaction soon!
I love that you actually do what we suggest 🙂
Of course! You guys never disappoint, every recommendation so far has been A+
This album in near and dear to my heart.
Pure rush of emotions. You have to listen to it, in your bed, lights off, and not caring about anything else but to those sounds.
I remember getting this album and Taproots first album at same time and they both are awesome bands
I'll have to check out Taproot soon!
I love Taproot and I don't hear a lot of people mention them
@@mollyesanborn Gift and Plead The Fifth are pretty great albums by Taproot, but I'd highly recommend their 3rd album Blue-Sky Research as it's probably the perfect blend of their overall sound.
Taproot is corny as hell and I love it. The first one at least
The opening monologue is Terence McKenna
Death Blooms is a metal classic. And yeah, that bass!
Would love a reaction to Periphery IV - Hail stan. Epic 16 minute song Reptile kicks it off.
You might like the RCHP album: Blood Sex Sugar Magic. Would love to see your reaction to that
