As a model building teacher, I got all four of the Makenzie switcher locomotives of BC Rail's former fleet. I got one set for my own layout, and the other for a layout my students are building. These are the best locomotives I have ever owned by a long shot! No regrets at all! Hope to see more of this calibre quality and detail. I'll be sure to get more of them.

Awesome review! I'm glad Athearn is upping their game and one thing I noticed they learned from the first Triclops SD60M release is the included spare bearing caps.
I was slightly disappointed my SD60 Triclops didn't come with extras, Athearn did fix it though and provided extras if people requested the replacement trucks.
I plan to purchase a BCOL dash 9, and do a solid review of it. I just did a review on Rapido Trains Inc's Comet Commuter cars last week. Love your review of this engine! New subscriber!
Nice review! I picked up 2 BCOL’s and they are great(4642, 4644), I installed ESU V5 in both of mine since they have a better sound file plus the correct BCOL K5L and steel bell!
At some point several of the shock plates and shocks were removed on the front and rear trucks of these, making a couple more bearings visible. A note for the modern modelers. Athearn however, got the trucks correct for the "as delivered" versions.
Great review ! I really like this model. I just got my cn models (2 #) and 1 Bc Rail. My only complaint is the fragility of the main side handrails. I am looking forward to cp sd70acu models next. Supposedly for January 2022, but now with significant delays

Athearn owns the company that makes McHenry couplers, so that is why Athearn uses plastic McHenry couplers. Athearn made the dash 9s to be Kadee compatible while still using McHenry.
I'm pretty sure these do have capacitors installed, on their factory DCC equipped engines they have 2 small capacitors mounted to the bottom of the decoder. I know my ES44AC from a couple years ago has them, I would imagine these do too.
I enjoyed watching this! A month earlier I picked up 2 earlier older ATHEARN blue box of this engine model It looks just as good, no sound systems I have an option to add the sound system later. One drawback the bell on the window cab want to install one, much like that of CN which absorbed BC RAIL. I had to get these after the many demonstrations & run buys I've been viewing on other channels. If they have these in CP RAIL i'm open to that...🤔hmm maybe UNION PACIFIC? 👍✅
I thought mine was going to have that issue, but it was good out of the box. I noticed it during the final stages of filming but I had taken off the shell a few times at that point and figured I have broken the glue point.
2 things of note right off the bat The horn casting and recording is incorrect for bcrail. A model of this detail category shouldn't come with incorrect parts

I caught that during the research portion, hopefully if they release a yellow sill version, Athearn will provide the correct trucks.

Awesome review! I noticed your walkway is warped, so is mine right out of the box. Debating whether to send it in for repair or not.
I ordered the DC versions, and will be putting in ESU Loksounds !
Cant go wrong with those either. The fact ESU did all the work for the soundfile will make your life much essier
Tsunami has more better sound quality, ESU has alot less bass.
@@kyleftw1679 IMO it depends on the speakers used. Loksound can be bassy when paired with the correct combination like a Scale Sounds speaker

It looks like there are a pair of capacitors on this board as well, but they don't act as "Keep Alives," which is the disappointing portion for me.

This is an awesome model. It does look the snow grate in the walkway has popped up. I bought 2 Canadian units and had to fix the grate issue on both.

Typical Soundtraxx, comes preset with the wrong horn and the wrong bell.
Typical - blaming Soundtraxx for someone at the Athearn factory not reading the CV instruction manual properly and programming the wrong CV values.
