    Thanks so much! I have a 2010 version with the red tip and could never read it and thought it was just me. My mechanic just berated me for the level being too low and gave no advice. He said that the only oil problem Minis have is that women drive them and they can’t figure out how to check the oil🙄. Thanks for the judgement free explanation!

    About the crappiest dipstick I have ever met. When we first bought the car the level was below zero mark and impossible to tell! What's wrong with a flat strip of steel?

      There's not even a dipstick in mine and the electronic replacement doesn't work. Oh also a headlight broke so I replaced it and now it doesn't work unless I replug the headlights every time I get in the car? apparently that software issue will cost me £500 to fix?
      I'm starting to believe those FUDS who said cars started getting worse after 2006.

    Thanks for posting this video. I have the dipstick with the reddish coloured plastic tip (Note to Mini: probably not the best colour to use for the plastic as it does not allow contrast with semi dirty oil). I looked at it for the first time today and for the life of me, had no idea how to read the oil level. This is helpful.

      no you should run the engine til its warm 5-10 minutes, let it stand for a small period of time & then check it, as your ensuring oil is correctly filled in the filter, oil filter housing & so-on, it also helps remove any build-up in the dip stick tube as oil gets warm & slides down metal etc
      dipping the dip stick a couple of times & wiping it clean also helps remove excess oil along the dip stick tube (which removes the chance of false readings
      once that's done simply dip & look, the oil level should sit between the 2 notices "not above & certainly not below"
      its actually very simple/easy.. if your not too sure even call BMW/mini & they'll either show you directly themselves or talk to you over the phone, most garages could assist if your polite & ask nicely for some advice!!
      dipping the oil cold isn't recommended on any car/bike & it NEVER has been!

    I’m randomly getting a check engine light and the code is “Engine oil pressure control valve, activation: Line

    Only got it twice within the last 800 or so miles. Car runs fine when it’s active but the message center does say “power is reduced”. Can clear it with scanner and I’m good to go with no issues.

      Assuming the oil level is okay, It could be a worn out oil pump, or fault oil pressure switch. Try replacing the switch first. Then going with thicker oil 5W40. If you have high mileage above 150k, then 5W40 would benefit you anyways.

      Hi, Oil consumption is normal on the S models. I tell my customers to check their oil every other weekend. I'd change to a thicker oil like 5w-40 full synthetic. Any top brand is fine. Also a faulty crankcase vent valve (which is built into the valve cover) can cause oil consumption and a slightly rough idle.

      Normally dealer will never tell you to check oil on the motor, that is why you than going to come for expansive repair after warranty period passed. Trust to dealers but check the oil level like this guy is saying and you will not visit dealer for expansive repair for long. For the valve he mentioned it is absolutely right since rubber part and spring deteriorate by time

      is this correct or is the garage just telling me anything to get me passed my warranty stage ?

    Thanks Mike, I have a 2010 Mini Cooper that burns considerably more oil in the warmer months than cooler ones, so from topping off maybe once over cooler 5-6 months to the other end of weekly in the summer months, could this be either a thermostat issue or perhaps oil cooler issue, trying to avoid the cost of replacing something unnecessarily... do you think it could be an issue with the worn out rings or something else and how can I determine the issue, thank you very much

    • @MikeMDs
      @MikeMDs  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It could be worn rings and valve guide seals. You can try running thicker oil 5-40 in the summer. Also try CETATEC from LIQUI-MOLY . It has ceramic in it. That will fill in the gaps in the cylinder walls and allow the piston rings to seal better. It is meant to actually prevent these issues. So it is not going to fix anything, but it will definitely help.

      Sorry, follow up to my question, you don't think lowering operating temp will help with the burn during the summer, when we first got the car, the thermostat housing was leaking and we had that replaced, and while I know that I should have done it at the time, I did not think to replace the thermostat, would a faulty or damaged thermostat be the issue, currently no warning lights, but then the car may have ran very low on coolant before I noticed it (no warning light) just notice the cooling fan going after parking on numerous occasions before checking, don't want to rebuild the engine, just want to see if say lowering the operating temp to the lower end will make a difference without smog test issue.

    It seems like if they knew that oil starvation was an issue they could have added an oil level sensor and saved everyone all the trouble. I am in the process of adding my own so that I don't have to continuously check the oil rather it will add oil if needed. Cars computers are so advanced that we shouldn't have to think about this.

      Yes unfortunately your story is similar to thousands of other MINI owners. But you are doing the right thing keeping the level up now. Also performing oil services every 5000 mi. is recommended, to keep the oil fresh. Especially since it only holds 4 liters of oil. Make sure to use a factory oil filter. The china ones will cause damage to the engine as they don't fit correctly and implode.

  • @Charkatak

    Hello Mike! Quick question on my 2016 MCS. So a year ago in March of 2019 MINI dealer changed oil and filter on my car and after the counter was reset, it showed next oil change in 9000 mi. Yesterday I took my car for an oil change to the same dealer and this time car shows next oil change in 8000 mi. Why would there be a 1000 mi difference? Maybe tech didn't drain old oil completely and filled with new oil, which in turn mixed both oils?

    • @MikeMDs
      @MikeMDs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it was programmed for a different issue while it was in there, the software lowers the oil service interval to prevent engine failure.

    • @Charkatak
      @Charkatak 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeMDs There was no other issue. It seems that the on board computer determined 8000 mi for the next oil change. I went trough my records and remember that I drove 4900K mi since last year's oil change and I had 3100 mi more to go = 8000 mi. So after changing the oil, the on-board computer reflects 8000 mi. I just thought that when the counter is reset, the mileage always defaults to 9000 or 10000 mi. Looks like that is not the case. Thanks!

    • @MikeMDs
      @MikeMDs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, If its running hot then the coolant type likely will not help. You have another underlying issue. It could be the electric fan, thermostat or water-pump. The electric fan is the most common. There are three fan speeds. Sometimes the first two speeds are burnt out and only the last one works. This allows the temperature to creep up to almost overheating before that third stage kicks in. The coolant is blue used for european . I recommend to have it diagnosed so you don't waste any money.

    • @wellwh0
      @wellwh0 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are terrible to be honest. Most irritating thing to meis they all drink oil like crazy (1L on 1.5k to 3k km). Timing chains issue are known, idle issues.. Though 2011 is facelift model they are a bit better.

    • @jb678901
      @jb678901 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Decent IF you take care of it. BUT if you do not change oil 2x as frequently as OEM recommended...it is a bit of a cascading nightmare. Low oil...look out for $$$ repairs. Never let oil fall below midway between Hi-lo, just to be on the safe side. Non-turbo eats less oil than turbo. Even a decent N14 (and N18) Prince engine will, by design, eat oil. To avoid oil consumption...drive less ...drive less aggressively...or simply drive Honda.
      Check oil at least every other gas tank refill.
      Once a year (assume 10k miles per annum) I put a shots glass each of SeaFoam into a) air intake manifold (just by PCV connection), b) oil fill, c) fuel tank. I will do this about 200 miles just before next oil change. Tends to clean out gunk from crank case, help with the carbon build-up problem on direct injection engine, and clean the fuel injectors. The oil return line from the turbo also tends to collect gunk, so the Seafoam helps here too.
      Lastly, really consider an OIL CATCH-CAN. One with a dipstick so that you can easily track its level. This will greatly help with the carbon build-up issue on the Mini direct injection engines. Also, put a small magnet next to the oil plug at the oil pan...or buy one of those neodymium magnet oil plugs.
      The oil level is key. If it goes LOW there are two things that can happen. First, the timing chain can increase rattling against its nylon/plastic runners...which will degrade and fracture these plastic runner guides...leading to timing chain replacement. This is exacerbated by the recalled tensioner bolt on earlier models, where low oil coupled with poor tensioner resulted in eventual failure. Rattling on cold start is clear sign to get this fixed IMMEDIATELY. Second, if you oil starve the turbo it will set in motion its eventual replacement early...again $$$ repair/replace.
      PS/disclaimer: I am a mech. engineer, not a mechanic. I learned the hard way, from my mechanic.

      Hi, Checking you oil shouldnt cause any issues. Just make sure the oil fill cap is on correctly and the dip-stick is all the way seated. I recommend taking to a MINI specialist in your area. They will give you a list of things needed in order of importance. Or you can take to the dealer to have them diagnose your issue. If you are money conscious, then take it to a reputable shop to have the dealer recommended items replaced.

    My question is:
    what is the difference between checking your oil to determine refill , as opposed to checking your oil and determining an oil CHANGE- drain pan, replace filter and subsequent refill?
    When the mini oil icon comes up- does that mean it’s time for the entire oil change or just means it can use some oil, as you determine on your own as you check periodically...?
    Thanks.

    • @paulheagen6318

      You don't determine the interval for an oil change by looking at your dipstick. Yuo also shouldn't rely on MINI's on-board system to tell you, since they are motivated to extend your service intervals to shows a reduced cost-of-ownership to get better ratings. Just change every 5,000 miles.

I checked the oil and there was no oil on the dipstick. My father-in-law added oil for me and I got it started again, it was still running very rough and I had to give it gas to keep it running but after about 3-4 minutes it was running like normal. I let it run for a good 15-20 minutes before turning it back off. When I went to drive it again (about an hour and a half later) it started doing the same chugging and rough idling and started to stall when I put it in gear (so I left it parked).
