    I flatten out the glass files so quickly. My nails are like rocks!

    Nice video. I’ve been using that sandpaper for probably 30 years (!). It tends to lose its original grit pretty fast, but thats ok. I’ll keep three squares of varying degree of smoothness/use and will progress through them all. The last or ultra smooth piece really dials in my tone. Imo, one of the best products out there. I also have a SoundFile. What I love about it is that it seems gentler compared to other files, including other glass files. It also leaves a shiny glasslike bevel, though for me, I still the sandpaper after the file. Great hearing other approaches. Thank you.

    Note the key to the best tone on the classical guitar is finding the best combination of right hand attach and ideal fingernail length and shape---sometimes it takes years of experimentation to find that Ideal mix. Couple of tips--take collagen and biotin supplements---eat jello ---I agree in using the glass files---they cut much smother and cleaner then polish the nails.
    Good luck in finding that ideal combination---Nice video. For me short/medium and straight on attach works best for and also transitions to steel string well if you play both.

    Thanks Hannah, very interesting video! I also use a glass file (by Leighton Denny) and haven't looked back since. I move the file from up to down, never both ways and never horizontally. i feel this give me more control over the shape and length of the nail. I also blow off the fine dust every couple of passes, and yes, wear my glasses too to see what is going on better. For under the nail I use a textile known as MicroMesh, it's super-cool and it goes up to 12,000 fine grain, but normally I start at about 3,000, then 6,000, and then 12,000. The length and shape of the nail is something very personal, as you say. Mine are rather shorter than yours. One thing I've noticed though is that it is better to file the nails at the end of the day, because while sleeping there seems to be some sort of 'rounding up' of the nails all by themselves, particularly under the nail, that gives a lovely tone the day after. Sounds counter-intuitive, but it works for me. Thanks again for the posting.

    Thank you for this demonstration. I was hoping to see and hear more of how you came up with which specific nail shapes work for you. That was my whole goal in watching this video. And Sound Files are all sold out across the board. I'm bummed.

    My nails suck
    Mine curve. I used to use clear nylon brush on. I have pretty good luck with fine grit sand paper like I did when I was studying in school
    Teacher showed me but I use a fine nail file to remove ridges along the bottom edges of my nails. My thumb nail is very thick
    Great for my bass tone.❤

    Do you ever go finer than 500 grit sandpaper. I bought some of the fine material sanding sheets. I found it was taking me a half hour to do my nails. For this reason I've cut them short and are concentrating on different aspects of my playing.

    Very 'handy' video. I think you 'nailed' this topic ;)
    Have you ever tried olive oil as opposed to a product like Nailitiques?
    I'm definitely going to pick up glass file and a hard file (instead of emery boards) after this though! I'm sick of going through multiple emery boards a week!

    • @HannahMurphyguitar
      @HannahMurphyguitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      codmate hahaha thank you! I haven’t tried olive oil but I’m definitely intrigued. Never thought of it before, have you tried it?

    • @codmate5409
      @codmate5409 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HannahMurphyguitar I have tried it and it seemed to increase strength whilst maintaining flexibility. The nails don't seem to get brittle or crack as much as they might. I am quite lucky with my nails though, and as long as I am eating plenty of vegetables they tend to stay fairly strong and flexible anyway, so I don't really use it any more. This year I'm getting more serious about my playing though, so I may well start trying more products out.
      There is an interesting thread about olive oil on delcamp: www.classicalguitardelcamp.com/viewtopic.php?t=68825
      Of course, all the guitarists are debating on what type of oil is the best - haha!
      BTW - I watched your guitar hacks video too and I also solved a tension problem some years ago with a hair band; I though it was just my guitar teacher who had this secret knowledge, but obviously it is quite widespread! I may also pick up one of those guitar trackers you were sponsored by - I left my concert guitar in a supermarket last week! Anyway - all the best and keep up the great work!

      codmate thanks for the link! I’m definitely interested in using oils I have already in my apartment lol
      Glad the hair band worked! It helped me out a ton too!
      Keep an eye on your concert guitar hahah the tracker would definitely help 😂

    Does nail shape change if you're plucking steel strings? The only videos I've found that show how to shape your nails are classical guitar players. I'm curious if steel strings vs nylon would impact the nail shape... Anyone with insight, I'd love to hear it!

    Hannah, somewhat like you, my thumb nail is extremely curved on 1 side (due to an accident I had when younger). You mentioned you grow them long. Do you find getting that flatness you need a problem on the thumb? thanks for your instructions, great help..Cheers

    • @HannahMurphyguitar
      @HannahMurphyguitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mr. Boze yeah getting the flatness is the trickiest for my thumb, it gets caught on the strings often. I just make sure to always get the left side of the thumb nail as flat as I can

  • @XImpaler420X
    @XImpaler420X 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello, I recently started playing with nails and have a question/concern. I can play fine with them, but I find that when I start to play fast or try tremelo my nails get "caught" on the strings and it slows me down. Like the string hits my flesh, I move my finger to pick and then the string gets stuck between my finder and the nail and then comes out.
    Do you know what might be the issue? Thanks!

      The shape of your nails...

    • @patricknazar
      @patricknazar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me I've found that filing at a 45 degree under the nail helps flatten the nail and also create a sort of ramp *under* the nail: side view \----- and top view \( Also making sure to round off the edges to make sure they have a bit of a ramp instead of a corner so they don't get caught. I had this same problem and this help significantly.
