Hi there! I have used the small which are about 1.4" and I have also used 1.6". A little bigger is easier though.

What kind of metal do you use to make sure it doesn’t eventually turn dark or green that isn’t expensive?

I typically order the rings on Amazon. Have not had any difficulty with the metals turning. Hope that helps!
