So, a few people said that they considered this game a collect-athon which I never considered before! So my question (if anyone cares) is what do you guys consider a collect-athon? Is it defined as collecting a threshold of items to progress? Or is it by the sheer amount of items you have to collect? I've always assumed the second, but idk...

    • @danielle5160
      @danielle5160 ปีที่แล้ว +32

I wouldn't say so. A collectathon is generally more non-linear in it's approach, and is a lot more focused on collecting itself. As you said in the video, the game isn't very strict with the snack requirements, and those are the only collectables. I think it's definitely a collectathon element, but not enough to make the game a collectathon outright.

I have such a weird history with this game because back when I was a kid my mom always acted like she doesn't understand video games games, yet she at some point, out of curiosity picked this game up to relax after work, which was super weird at first because I would stop playing for the day, then spend the next day over at a friends house and one day later boot this game up and have just no f*cking clue where I even am, so I had to give her a different savestate, at which point she would 100% the damn thing before I even beat the Mastermind on the original save.

8:27 - 8:31 Okay, hear me out. Snack Gates serve a lore purpose. We all know the saying _”Would you do it for a Scooby Snack”_ , right? As Scooby-Doo gets deeper and deeper into the adventure, into more danger, and having seen things get worse and worse, he needs to eat more Scooby Snacks, to keep having the bravery to push on. If he’s eaten enough, on the way, great, he keeps on pushing, brave as he be. If not? He’s not brave enough to go into what he sees as even worse dangers, yet.

I'm starting to see a lot of TH-camrs talk about this game. Especially over the past couple years and I can't help but wonder if it's partially because of Heavy Iron's BFBB getting the rehydrated treatment a couple years back. I'm glad though, as I believe this, along with BFBB, are some of the best licensed games ever, and show that even those types of games can be well done when made by developers that care about the source material.

I vividly remember looking in my family's cheat folder for games and struggling to input the codes with my 8 year old hand-eye coordination. Getting the bubblegum and soap early really DID make the game way different like you say, I felt like I could do more things in each level and get to places in a different order, even if 8 year old me didn't understand it the same way I do after watching this video. Really solid review, makes me want to replay it for old times sake (and for the music because dear god the boss themes are still so good).

I loved playing this game as a kid and I've replayed it a bunch, I actually replayed it a year or two ago. I have some level designs and sound effects stuck in my head, like that voice line of Shaggy going up and going down in that one manor level with the chimneys. This was one of the most fun games I owned for the PS2 and i think it helped introduce kids to some early metroidvania elements. Soundtrack is also really good and I still listen to it every now and then
Also, that fish lady monster in the docks area terrified me as a kid. I didn't watch a lot of the original scooby cartoon so it was just an entirely new monster for me. Absolutely dreaded falling off the conveyor belts and when I did I was always super slow and careful around the piles of fish in case she'd jump out. I may not remember her from the show but I remember her from my nightmares lol
Hopefully the game does get a remaster. With other franchises like Crash, Spyro and Spongebob getting game remasters, I really hope this game or another scooby game like Unmasked gets the same treatment. Nice to see that it's still being talked about though

Same here! It wasn't so bad in some levels, but the way it would burst out from the piles of fish on a floor you had no traction on freaked me out. I would stress out soooo much just trying to stay on those conveyor belts.

I personally feel like it actually holds up pretty well for a licensed game from the PS2 era. I played this game at a friend's house. I stayed over two extra days just to beat the entire game. It was one of my favorite experiences on the PS2, and I never even owned it.

My sister and i beat this game but in the most anxiety ridden way ever.
We didnt have a PS2 memory card, so that playstation stayed on for at least 3 weeks straight. Then the power went out and we lost it all..
Years later, we were living together and started playing again. We had to use fecking cheats to beat the game.
I love it, and i love the memories it created.

27:20 As someone who 100%'d this game, it took me HOURS to find that Scooby Snack since there's no indication that there's one there.
Also, the roof area was horrible due to the camera and flying enemies.

I absolutely adore this game. I wish they’d remake it with a “purist” mode that adheres closely to the original as well as a reimagined version that builds on the original and expands it. I put so many hours into this game as a kid and I’ll always love it to pieces.

i actually played through this one recently. I enjoyed it and thought it was pretty decent. Some parts didn't really work well but when it worked it was fun. My sister and I had this one on the ps2 as kids and we never really got far because we didnt really understand how the game worked and the whole backtracking concept. it felt good to come back and playthrough it and it brought back some memories

I recently downloaded a PlayStation 2 emulator for the sole purpose of playing this game. I remember vividly being a kid and being on Redbeard's boss fight, with no memory card (too broke for one), and as the final wave of ghosts were coming through, I lost power and had to restart. I was so devastated at the time, and coming back, got to that point in less than a couple hours. Thank you for making this video. More people need to be aware of just how nice this game truly is to play for the first time. (like you said, the FIRST time)

This was my favorite game on my GameCube when I was a kid and I just started replaying it, besides being way easier than I remember it is still surprisingly good even compared to modern standards.
    Nice video!
Edit: I said it was way easier, but that stupid level where you had to jump around the bouncy sails (this one: 14:20 & 20:08 & 25:55)still made me want to throw my gaming setup out the window

man, I played hours and hours of this game on OG Xbox when I was a kid but could only ever get to the Black Knight boss fight with that witch flying around you and never could beat it lol. It didn't help that the witch used to scare the sh*t out of me and probably was one of the main reasons I stopped trying to beat that part lmao. I used to just start new games and play all the way up to that boss fight and then start over again the next time I'd play the game. My Xbox actually still works (knock on wood) and I'm pretty sure I'm a bit better at gaming and not as afraid of the witch by now....maybe I'll break it out and see what's good. It was such a fun game, man

I'd personally call this a 'Doobyvania' or a 'Collect-A-Doo', cuz the main collectable is literally everywhere, so there's no worries there, but also it takes ideas from Metroidvanias too. I'd call this game a 'Dooby Frights' game, as it's one of the classic games to do this. Shove the items you need to get to advance the game in your face, take inspirations from Metroidvanias (but aren't those kinds of games), and has a unique platforming style.

This game was the first game I ever got for my Gamecube, and also the first actual console I myself owned. I think I was like 6 or 8 at the time. It was Christmas Day and I usually would wake up at like 2 in the morning, maybe 4 sometimes. Would go around waking everyone up all excited that Santa came! But this Christmas was unique, my mom told me that she wanted me to wait to open this heavier present, I spent the next 5 or so hours in agony waiting, everyone else went to back to bed. I couldn't sleep. Finally I was able to open it and it was the Gamecube with Scooby-Doo! Night of 100 Frights. I was so excited. Scooby Doo has always been a favorite of mine, used to watched VHS tapes of it while I was sick in a hospital bed.
I remember playing it, I was creeped out, and I couldn't figure out what to do. Like I got into the Mansion but couldn't do anything else. Good times.
