This is a compelling documentary about Sogyal Rinpoche, who was a prominent Tibetan Dzogchen lama. Rinpoche had been accused of sexual and physical assault and abuse, as well as misusing charitable funds, with allegations stretching back to the 1970s.
In July 2017, eight formerly close students of Tibetan Buddhist teacher Sogyal Rinpoche sent a letter to him and his students detailing the emotional, physical and sexual abuse they'd experienced at his hands, and the decades-long cover up by management of Rigpa, the organization that manages his network of study and practice centers. For the majority of students, reading the attestations of abuse came as a great shock and had a huge impact on their lives.
The twelve page letter, dated 14 July 2017, explicitly describes sexual, physical, and emotional abuse by Sogyal Rinpoche of Rigpa students, extending over a long period. It states that they have been beaten severely, were asked to perform sexual acts and lie in order to conceal Sogyal's misbehavior. The letter also describes that Sogyal has a lavish and indulgent lifestyle, and depicts a cavalier use of donations to support this lifestyle, and a tyrannical and abusive manner towards those who worked closely with him and who were often key in managing the Rigpa organization.
    Link to the letter: www.lionsroar.com/wp-content/...
On 11 August 2017, Sogyal retired from his position as Rigpa's spiritual director in the wake of the abuse allegations. He died on 28 August 2019 of a pulmonary embolism in Thailand, where he was being treated for colorectal cancer. Sogyal did not face justice. This documentary examines the sexual abuse in the Buddhism and serves as a good reminder to be careful when entering into any religious group, and to listen when members and ex-members speak out. If you were abused in any way by Sogyal Rinpoche let us know. PLEASE SHARE, SPEAK UP, COMMENT AND LIKE.

I come from a family in Buddhism which is based on the Philosophy of Life. Reaching adulthood, started to read on Gautama Buddha, the Lord Buddha, who is a Teacher.
The teachings are Do not put on a so called holy person on a pedestal.
In fact the Teacher said you are allowed to question the teachings.
    Enlightenment takes aeons to attain.

In Gautama's First Turning of the Wheel and during his discourse to the Kalamas he said "..do not be lead by reports or tradition or hearsay. Be not be led by the authority of religious text (the dalai lama), nor by mere logic or inference, nor by considering appearances, nor by the delight of speculative opinions, nor by seeming possibilities, nor by the idea: 'this is my teacher'. But oh Kalamas, when you know for yourself that certain things are unwholesome (fragmented) and wrong and bad then give them up...And when you know for yourself that certain things are wholesome (whole-sum) and good, then accept them and follow them".
The Buddha went even further. He told the bhikkus that "a disciple should examine even the Tathagata (Buddha) himself so that he (the disciple) might be fully convinced of the true value of the teacher whom he follows."
This is the foundation of the teaching of the Buddha. Thus it is clear, Tibetan religion is not Buddhism but a distorted and highly contaminated form of lamaism etc.
The truth is in plain sight for those with the capacity and courage to LOOK.❤

I spent time with Sogyal Rinpoche, in Portland, OR, back in the early 1980's. I KNEW he had a degree of deviant sexual energy, and it's good to have it finally confirmed! My experience: We were just talking, in the foyer of the home / counseling center where he was being given space to hold gatherings for Buddhist teachings. It was me, and the woman host (a very savvy spiritual and personal growth teacher herself), and Sogyal. I can't remember exactly what words he used to get physically close to me, but he hugged me, and then wrapped his arms tight around me and lifted me up off the ground, and tried to make it seem like he was just being jovial and friendly. It was surprising, and weird, and the other woman and I both knew it. It was like he was 'copping a feel' as they used to say...and testing out my response to his overture. She and I just tried to brush it off and didn't confront him directly about it. But, I'm sure Sogyal recognized this gesture was getting him nowhere in this context. I sure hope he didn't find a way to take advantage of any of the other women who attended those gatherings here. But, I'm very disturbed to hear, in this video, that he was able to leave many other victims in his wake, over many years of this s**t.
This all illustrates the typical protections given to any religious group, or cult, or even small cloistered community, that doesn't want their 'bad seeds' or any aberrant behavior to be exposed, lest it rock their boats. What a shame to think that this may be as rampant in Buddhist circles as it is in all aspects of Christianity and, truly, all religions worldwide.

It just occurred to me, I also know a Tibetan immigrant, who escaped Tibet as a teenager and ended up in Dharamsala, India, part of the Dalai Lama's community of Tibetans in exile, and got a degree from their college there. I don't know if he ever crossed paths with Sogyal, but I wonder if he would have any commentary on how much of this behavior exists within the Tibetan Buddhist lamas community. 🌟

As His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama said’ we can survive without religion but we can’t survive without love , compassion, understanding, trust etc. And the basic root of every religion are love and compassion.
But nowadays by using the name of God and religion, some so called religious leader are doing stupid things for their own interest. And such acts cause shame for their own religion and it’s followers. And particularly in this documentary, I am saddened and ashamed to hear this. For many years I tried and something always happened. I never went but followed some of his teachings through CDs and classes in Brisbane and his book. I know now that perhaps my own wisdom and sense of intuition may have been working …. I never felt a need to have a guru. I never felt that connection. I respect the teachings of the Buddha and many of his followers but I also see the best parts of many religions.
I had a similar experience when exploring Satyananda yoga which ended up exposing similar scenarios.
I am always wary when humans start to elevate themselves and others worship. When there are large amounts of money involved I am suspicious……in 1 comment somebody said the Buddha said to take a long time to assess a guru……12 years….maybe that’s the truth with all relationships

This is just my opinion on Tibetan Buddhism which is free for all Tibetan Lamas to practice Tibetan Buddhism of their choice and religious freedom, but in the end, blame game was all on his holiness the Dalai Lama which is not acceptable for Tibetan people. The next nite two people had left for home, 4 more people joined the table and they too were all aquarians.. Things like this happened day in and day out. Among the very many enlightening, revelatory and critical comments of sharing, I must put one controversial idea for people to think about. Tibetan "Buddhism" is NOT Buddhism, not for me as a natural born Mahayana Buddhist in North India. The Buddha warned against idol worship and rituals. He had prohibited seekers of Truth and those on a long journey to Enlightenment, from idol worship, even HIS own, for after his physical passing.
Tibetan Buddhism is a perverted form of Buddhism; doesn't mean it won't possess portions of Truth and valuable wisdom, I mean, if that bait weren't there, what else to hook the seeker? However, perverted forms of things, anything (Tibetan Buddhism or Sogyal (I cannot in good grace call him 'rinpoche'), will manifest only perversion - perverted experiences, for those connected to the emanating force/energy/person of said perversion.
Beware, false idols will lead you to false inner landscapes and false reality, no idols. No rituals. No ornate BS structures and money it needs and then that is the focus. Nope.
Inner Buddha in yourself, reached by embodying THE Buddha's attributes. Basically, no riff-raff. No perversions. And yes, No PUNY Sogyal whatever has the power, no matter how "holy" (it's rather perverted) should, can or will EVER take away from the beauty that is The Buddha, and his teachings, maintained only and only by a lineage of small number of monks in Myanmar through the centuries. Vipassana. S. N. Goenka, a wise teacher, a beloved teacher, who took it global. Tibetan Buddhism, as grand, colourful and shiny as it is, is not Buddha Dhamma.
May all be healed amd protected on their journey. Ikhal. ❤

Its important to study the history of Buddhism to get a better understanding of how Buddhism evolved. The earliest sect is the Theravada Buddhism , then followed by Mahayana Buddhism and finally spreading to Tibet to become the Tibetan Buddhism.
Asoka was the Indian king that promoted Buddhism, however, after his death, Buddhism started to lose its prominence. In order to survives, the monk started to incorporate teachings from the Brahmin. About 1100 years after Buddha went into nirvana, Buddhism spreaded to Tibet. However, it has lost its original flavour, and the one that spreaded to Tibet was heavily influenced by Tantra Sex, and that's the reason why the practice of tantra sex is in the Tibetan school. For those who are interested, its a good practice to do more research before committing to a religion. Its like knowing what we are buying in a supermarket, the ingredients of a product etc. We do that for the food we eat, surely we have to do the same for 'spiritual food'.....

Any religion that puts someone as a leader or on a pedestal is not understanding the human condition in totality. The very predicament of any religion or spiritual tradition lends itself to the especially vulnerable. Unless the religion also teaches the student or follower the necessity to follow their own inner voice while teaching basic tenets, you are basically creating a cult situation where people give up their power instead of being empowered. Those religious leaders who get a taste of power, and cannot resist it run the risk of not only damaging others, but creating their own downfall eventually. Their downfall is supposed to happen if they find themselves sucked in by power because that is the real path. Unfortunately, those innocents that get taken down, we’re going to have to learn the hard lesson of not giving their power away to any religiosity or spiritual leader.
To resist being beat or abused as a threat to your enlightenment is absolute abuse and to create an environment to convince one of that begs the question: why have you been drawn to this? Therapy might be one’s first choice to freedom. Qualified therapist.

Buddha made it very clear that undertaking the precept of abstention from sexual intercourse is one of the core requisite to the path of enlightenment, not the converse. This is very clearly stated in the Patimokkha. A transgression on any one of the 4 Parajikas, sexual intercourse by monastics being one, is a most serious offence and a monastic must disrobe for such a transgression. One does not need to follow a teacher to gain enlightenment. One just needs a good friend (usually a wise learned monk), kalyanamitta, to guide one on the path to enlightenment. It's a path one has to walk for himself/herself as the Buddha clearly said in the Digha Nikaya - Sutta No. 16 Parinibbana Sutta; "Dwell with yourselves as your islands, with yourselves as your refuge, with no other refuge. Dwell with the Dhamma as your island, with the Dhamma as your refuge, with no other refuge". It is clear from this sutta and a few other suttas that the Buddha did not promote blind faith, blind adherence and simply believing what others teach or said. He had always encouraged the use of one's wisdom and independence of mind to see for oneself the truths. The earliest recorded teachings are in the 5 Nikayas; four of which are considered reliable. These 4 are the Anguttara Nikaya, Majjhima Nikaya, Samyutta Nikaya and the Digha Nikaya. The 5th book (Khuddaka Nikaya) contains an assortment of sutta which contain a mix of the earliest teachings of the Buddha with later materials and stories, notably the Jataka Tales. The Jataka Tales are to be read with application of intelligence, great caution and trepidation.
My sincere wishes of success to all who truly seek to learn the truth of our existence and ultimately enlightenment and Nibbana. Sadhu sadhu sadhu

Hopefully those Dharma seekers always have faith in the words of Buddha but choose carefully the gurus, who are mortals thus not perfect and avoid especially those who wanted be treated like gods….
As Tibetan woman myself I feel saddened to hear the misconduct of “Guru” like sogyal . The spiritual seekers in West need to to choose their teachers wisely: Did Buddha not advised us to choose a spiritual teacher wisely and analyze his words thoroughly??? It is the biggest sin to misuse Dharma for personal gain and those who are still seeking a Dharma teacher, please go to Buddhist communities and live there for some time becuase the Sanghas are quite well informed, who are genuine good spiritual teachers !!! When you find one , do not follow them like a dog but use your commonsences. We should learn from such case to be more alert than searching for a speedy enlightenment by sweet talkers…! Those who are real interested in Buddhism have to protect the essence of Dharma not become” shopping mall” for spiritual shoppers and watered down to consumer product like misusing esoteric/ tantrums for the money making machines. Tantric practioners are not entertainers and they need life long study in seclusion ….
And to the comment on status of woman: In all patriarchal societies the status of a woman is lower than a man , so is in some regions in Tibet. I my self and many of Tibetan women would not consider themselves as second class citizens .

The original discipline (vinaya) is applied rigorously, which forbid - for example - a monk even being on his own with a woman. I was aware of this rinpoche because Buddhist that I knew we're attending teaching events by him. At that stage I hadn't heard any rumours about abuse, but I was surprised at the fact that these Buddhist weren't developing their own meditation practice, but seemed to be hanging on every word uttered by this teacher instead. That struck me as odd and wrong at the time. Then rumours started to trickle out about five years ago from people who had direct experience of him, suggesting that he was a bully and a womaniser.

I was a Buddhist growing up in Thailand. This kind of story is quite common in my country. Buddhism is a religion that bow-down and worships man who is a sinner like you and me. Now I come to know the Truth. It is sad for me to see when westerners got led to the kingdom of the darkness and the lie.
I pray that Jesus will reveal Himself to more people around the world the way He reveals Himself to me.
    God bless you all❤

I left Christianity as the bible is unreliable as it contains too many unfufilled prophecies, self contradictions and atrocities. Here's a sample.
      1) End time
Jesus said some of those standing with him shall not !see death till they see the son of man coming in his kingdom Matt 16:28
Jesus said this generation shall not pass away till all be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not pass away Luke 21:32-33
      2) Temptation
God does not tempt man James 1:13
God did tempt Abraham Gen 22:1
      3) Earth
      Earth abides forever Eccl 1:4
Elements shall melt, earth and the works shall be burned up 2 Peter 3:10
      4) power of god
With god all things are possible Matt 19:26
Lord was with Judah, drove out inhabitants of the mountain but not inhabitants of the Valley because they had chariots of iron Judges 1:19
      5) Sword
Put aside your sword, for all who take sword shall perish with the sword Matt26:52
He that has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one Luke 22:36
      6) crucifixion
They crucified him in the 3rd hour Mark 15:25
About the 6th hour, they crucified him John 19: 14-16
      7) Jesus
Jesus never answered Pilate and Pilate marvelled greatly Matt 27:13-14
      Jesus answered Pilate John 18:33-34
      8) Sins
Everyone bear own sins. Sins not passed to another Deut 24:16
Sins are passed down to the 4th generations Exodus 20:5
All sin thru one man Romans 5:12
Children do not bear parent's sins Ezekial 18:20
Slaughter the children for their father's sins Isaiah 14:21:22
      9) god
God does not change Malachi 3:6
God does not lie and repent Numbers 23:19
The lord repented of the evil he thought of doing to his people Exodus 32:14
The lord put a lying spirit in the mouth of some prophets 1 kings 22:23 and god allows people to be deluded Thessul 2:11-12 though lying lips are a abomination to the lord Prov 12:22
New covenants given because first eternal covenants given to Jews were faulty Hebrews 8:7
      10) Grace
Man is saved through grace, not works Ephesians 2:8-9
By works a man is justified, not by faith alone James 2:24
      11) Parents
      Honor thy parents Exodus 20:12
Death for disobeying parents Romans 1:29-32
Whoever does not hate father, mother cannot be my disciple Luke 14:26, Matt 10:34
      12) Freewill
Freewill in Christianity is a myth as shown in Romans 9:9-24 where things are predistined and mankind could be punished even for things out of their control.
The list does not end here and anyone of the above is sufficient to prove the bible is unreliable. Since we cannot trust the bible on things we can see, all the more reasons we cannot trust the bible on what it says about things we cannot see.

Yeshua already said to be careful wolves come in sheep's clothing to lead you away. No one is without sin, alleviating a mere human to that level is like taking him to be a God. Historical fact is all these people are still in tombs and graves, only one tomb and hell could not hold him because he had the power to take his life and the power to lift it up.

When behaviours and teachings strayed too far from the ethics the Buddha had laid down via the precepts, it always leads to damage and harm of other beings. There is no such thing as crazy wisdom, only an excuse to abuse and exploit.

How stupid to expect the present day Dalai Lama (the one in India) to "speak up".
    He is just another 'politician'.
    .
From claiming to 'not be reborn' to saying that the violent protests of Tibetans is their expression.. which had better not been restrained.
    .
He has just tried to prop himself has possibly the laat of the incarnations and
be also be in the good books of some people who look up to him.
That is all that there is to the (current) Dalai Lama.

Buddhism only requires practitioner to 1) Avoid Evil, 2) Do Good and 3) Purifying your Mind. Buddha predicted there will be many false prophets, so Buddha thought the Kalama Sutta. The Kalama Sutta states (Pali expression in parentheses):[5]
Do not go upon what has been acquired by repeated hearing (anussava),
    nor upon tradition (paramparā),
    nor upon rumor (itikirā),
nor upon what is in a scripture (piṭaka-sampadāna)
    nor upon surmise (takka-hetu),
    nor upon an axiom (naya-hetu),
    nor upon specious reasoning (ākāra-parivitakka),
nor upon a bias towards a notion that has been pondered over (diṭṭhi-nijjhān-akkh-antiyā),
nor upon another's seeming ability (bhabba-rūpatāya),
nor upon the consideration, The monk is our teacher (samaṇo no garū)
Kalamas, when you yourselves know: "These things are good; these things are not blamable; these things are praised by the wise; undertaken and observed, these things lead to benefit and happiness," enter on and abide in them.'
Thus, the Buddha named ten specific sources whose knowledge should not be immediately viewed as truthful without further investigation to avoid fallacies.
Buddhist practitioner owe unto themself to find a geninue teacher. There is no such thing as a Master.....Only A teacher of Buddhism. Buddha taught that NO ONE should claim that they have special siddhi or special power, even they do have.

Actually as someone has mentioned, reason to study the dharma shouldn't be to boost the ego like a large baloon or it will pop one day. We must study the dharma and practice it to have our egos shattered and crashed. In the Vajrayana, it's the job of the guru to stomp on our egos. But Vajrayana requires both students and guru to check and test each other's qualities for atleast 12 years as mentioned in the texts. But the most important thing is to check your own intention. Don't come to study Buddhism expecting success, financial gain, beautiful relationships, getting beautiful partners, having long healthy life. The intention to study the dharma is to get rid of self grapsing and ego clinging., i e only if you genuinely wish to achieve enlightenment for the sake of all sentient beings. Otherwise if you want temporary happiness and success in this life, I am sure there are worldly gods you can worship and you can just be a non practitioner but be kind hearted.

Buddha never gave the Vajrayana teachings, he only gave the Mahayana and Theravada teachings. It's mad that it's still talked about as Buddhism. Vajrayana was taught by Padmasambhava, who lived 800 years after Buddha and taught the exact opposite of Buddha. The sex, psychological, and spiritual abuse is not an exception, it's core practice.
