    Such an underrated film. The screenplay alone is a work of literature that contains many gems of depth and insight. The cinematography is a work of art and the acting superb. Despite all that it’s a film that many people don’t even know exists.

    One of the greatest movies ever made. This scene breaks my heart. Arthur wants Merlin to stay so bad. Like a boy who needs to let go of his father.

    • @pricejoss
      @pricejoss 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      That is exactly what this scene symbolises. Arthur is entering the dark night of the soul. This film and the Arthur legend work on so many levels. In order for Arthur to become who he really is he must be put through the hardest tests (the search for eh grail is symbolic - drink from Christ’s words, his “cup”, and you will be filled). He is now ready to face these tests alone to force him to become through a painful transformation - for good to triumph over evil, for Arthur to realise his destiny. Without being on his own he would not do this. This is why Merlin must leave him. Uther, Arthur’s father is a metaphor for mankind’s fall from God, his separation. He is wilful and driven by his base desires. He lost awareness of his divine nature and was corrupted by his intellect ie his sense of self that became separated from god. Arthur must atone for the sins of his father (cause and effect - his father was the cause, Mordrid is the effect) and return to God. Arthur is a metaphor for the return to the divine. He embodies divine qualities. Merlin is god-like and has guided Arthur because he can see beyond time and space. He knows the future. Arthur can’t and doesn’t. Merlin therefore forces Arthur to reawaken his awareness of the divine within himself through his departure. This is faith. Arthur’s faith brings Merlin back later in the film “your love brought me back”. He does this in the land of dreams ie in the unconscious. Our memory of our true nature and of our divine Self/God within is locked in the unconscious. It is through faith and carrying our cross (being tested by suffering and struggle) that we remember.

    Such a sad scene. Arthur loved Merlin and he was fond of him and Merlin had become like a father to Arthur and he helped Arthur to become the great king and the man he was. It's hard to say goodbye.

    • @pricejoss
      @pricejoss 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Merlin is an allegory for the archetypal Higher Self, the God within. In the Age of Man, mankind’s mind splits and becomes ruled by the ego. The Higher Self becomes separated and man enters the dark night of the soul - spiritual darkness and a test to bring a man back to his true Self. This is represented in Excalibur by Merlin’s departure leaving Arthur alone and without the guidance of his Higher Self. The quest for the grail is a quest for a return to Self.

      There is an awful lot of 'letting go' in this film, the fact Merlin is surprised at the universe not being finished with him here yet is a lovely touch. It also has an element of that to it but from the standpoint of someone 'in the know'. Throwing the Sword out into the lake is another 'letting go' moment too, a very important one. Arguably Arthur kneeling against the standing stone could be viewed as a form of surrender and lo and behold he enters the dream state and finds his friend and mentor.

      @Jaegar19Ultima not in manliness, Uther testosterone is unmatch : "Merlin, Merlin, I'm the strongest, I'm the One" while going through the battle on his horse cracking up skulls with his battle axe while the götterdämmerung plays in the background, there is no greater thing than that, Uther was not meant to be king, he was meant to be a mercenary, a loner that thrives only for battle and mayhem.

      You are 100% right on the fact that Arthur was far better then his father in every way regarding kingship.
      However, in a lot of other factor, Uther was way better, dude was a beast alpha god.
      Would personnaly rather be Uhter than Arthur any time of the day.

    Beautiful scene from a beautiful movie. Even though Boorman's attempt at adapting The Lord of the Rings into a movie failed, he brought over some of the themes from LotR, such as "This is a time for Men and their ways" that Merlin kept repeating. Similarly, in LotR, it was the time of the fading of the Elves as they all were sailing West, and the Dominion of Men in Middle-earth was beginning. He also wanted the final scene in Excalibur to be the same as that of LotR -- a ship sailing away into the Undying Lands (Avalon/Valinor)

    I love how blunt he is when Arthur asks if they'll see each other again. He doesn't try to give him words of optimism, comfort or to even humour him that they may see each in another life or some shit. He's just like: ''Nah you won't ever see me again. Bye''.

    • @jesssss7154
      @jesssss7154 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Exactly! That's what makes this scene seem so genuine. It doesn't play out like a scene made with modern sensibilities or a modern mindset that is schooled in contemporary approaches to counseling and psychology. It's more of an old world approach to handling such moments. More of a blunt "this is how it is, and this is how we must deal with things" kind of way that is more grounded in reality and it feels so refreshingly honest. And the director John Boorman saw this as the way to keep it in spirit with the time the movie took place I think. And I think that's why years and years later this scene still hits home with as much impact as it did when I first saw this movie. Bravo Mr Boorman! Bravo!!

    But Arthur does NOT "face the moment at last - to be king - alone". Instead, he sinks into a lethargic reverie, consumed with the betrayal of his wife and best friend, as well as his own sin.
    But Percival ultimately helps Arthur recover his spirit. And he reconciles with Guinevere who gives him back Excalibur - the symbol of his rightful authority. And he reconciles with Lancelot whose own salvation is to die a Knight of the Round Table. And he ultimately banishes evil from The Land.

      The "evil" is his own son, whose mother was Morgan le Fay. The "evil" his son wanted was to be recognized as Arthur's son, but since Morgan wasn't Christian and they were not considered married according to Christian rites, Arthur refused to recognize his son as his heir (despite the fact that he had no heirs by Guinevere, and even if he had, their parentage would have been called into question by her infidelity with Lancelot).
      The most "evil" thing Mordred could be accused of (other than wanting his father to be his father) is wanting to restore the rights of the old religion of the land. Which would be a heinous evil to a medieval Christian, but to modern sensibilities seems only fair.

    It was harder for Merlin to say goodbye, Arthur knew he had no choice and moved on - hardened by his past experiences.

    Picking up on this thread, I checked wikipedia about his passing, he was a very fine supporting actor, never quite got first billing, but a brilliant supporting actor, of which his Merlin, to me, is quite simply the best.
    He was a true actor, capable of carrying off any role & I also remember his Little John from the 1976 film, Robin & Marian, down to earth & humourous.
    A sad loss.

      Nicol Williamson a supporting actor????? Never!
      He played Macbeth
      The lead in inadmissible evidence- check his cv
      He would be turning in his grave.
      Dangerously edgy and quite quite BRILLIANT 💥

      To be fair, he was a leading man most of the time due to his intensity on stage and on screen. Only a couple of supporting roles, but always important ones.

    Out of the Merlin's I have at least seen Excalibur, Merlin the mini series and the Sword and the Stone I think Nichol Williamson is the best and Sam Neil Second.
    I think honestly as a Kid watching this so many times before I ever Saw Sword and the Stone it kinda ruined any Kid Film or Book Version of the Arthurian Legend as it is to this day the end all ultimate King Arthur story.

    @Anakin- at this point in the movie, he's already been helped by Percival and is ready to fight Mordid's army. The sinking, lethargic part you mention was before this scene.

    • @RFerrer
      @RFerrer  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Incorrect. This is way before that scene, right before he finds Lancelot and Guinevere.

    • @tipigi3570
      @tipigi3570 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      he could hardly lift his head before Percival helped him...remember when he drinks from the grail how he's suddenly re-energized? Lancelot shows up DURING the last battle.

    • @RFerrer
      @RFerrer  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      tipigi I'm talking about his finding Lancelot and Guinevere while they're having an affair, not the last battle. This scene is a good half hour before Percival shows up with the grail to cure Arthur. Arthur has this conversation with Merlin, who then meets with Morgana and is trapped, while Arthur finds Lancelot and Guinevere and stabs Excalibur into the ground. Arthur then falls into his trance, which leads to the Grail Quest. This... Excalibur, The Land of Dreams ...is the scene where he meets Merlin before the final battle.
