    Update:
Now that I've been using it for a month, I feel like I'm getting bottlenecked by the router speed. I also just recently switched to Davinci Resolve as my primary editor and editing straight off the NAS cannot keep up with the speed of Davinci. I now use the NAS as my storage and a portable SSD for my current projects. It is very convenient to have access to all my files but the speed for me has not proven to be able to edit off of (even while using proxies).
If anyone has any tips or suggestions, I welcome all advice.

Great video and super-informative! Thanks for posting. I'm in the market for my first NAS. Now that you are using Davinci Resolve and editing with a portable SSD, you are not utilizing the Samsung 4TB internal SSD and NVMe. Correct? Just wanted to clarify and learn from your experience. Thanks Brandon!

      UPDATE to the Update:
After posting this comment, I got an email from Synology customer support who helped troubleshoot what could be bottlenecking speed. I want to shout them out rn because I didn't reach out to them, they saw my video, read my comment, and reached out to me. That's some good customer service!
They suggested I plug the NAS directly from the thunderbolt adapter into the 10GbE port in the NAS rather than through the switch. I've been testing it out and I believe it has improved the speed! Thank you Christopher for all the help!

This would be fine if you’re the only user. But what if you have 5 users in the household? Plugging the NAS into the switch seems like the logical scenario for multiusers.

@@brandondavismedia3594 Can you tell me more about how to plug in directly and how to set it up?

You should look into what type of Ethernet cables you are using. This will bottleneck your speed. Try Cat6 or Cat7 Ethernet cables.

This was really helpful. Sometimes the non-tech answers to questions such as “can I plug into a Wi-Fi extender” can be difficult to find. Thank you 😀

Thanks for making this! You’re definitely not alone in jumping into NAS without fully understanding how they work. I’m in the same boat, where we bought the NAS but my internet just cannot keep up for full editing use. Great to have all this space though! Lessons for next time.

Very nice idea to have 3HDs and 1SSD for "cold" and "hot" storage in the same NAS. Congratz

I too am in the NAS learning struggle game right now. Getting a 6-Bay so I can setup 3 important drives as a simple RAID 1 backup system. I already have an SSD I'm using for the current projects, and I've also have an older 2-bay (also in a RAID 1) that I want to actually be on the internet for sharing finished projects. The 6 bay is storage I don't need online but want to be backed up all the time because I'm absolutely horrible at remembering to do it myself, and so I'm going to attempt to keep it off the internet and only use it on my LAN.
So much to learn for this full project to happen, but I can FEEL it will be awesome! Hope your system is working out for you after this month since you put it out!

It is a good initial setup. I went thru a similar process when I first invested in Synology. You will realize later that considering redundancies and backups will increase your investment. 30T plus can be easy to seat up but thinking about what to backup of your data and setting that up will be interesting.
    Enjoy the journey.

fyi, 10gbe = 1000 Megabyte = 1 Gigabyte per second. The 250 Megabyte are the result oft your slow HDDs.

Space Rex is awesome. You should be able to get much faster speeds than reported. 1Gb connection should enable transfers around 110MBps when connected over ethernet, 10Gb should be over 500MBps in real world.
