As a fisherman I appreciate you cleaning up all the lost lures and line. I never use braid without a short mono leader so at least if I do lose a lure I'm not leaving a bunch of braid in the water.
Cheers man. And no doubt eh? Imagine what some of those un diveable spots would look like down below. It's crazy to think that the vast majority of lines lures that have been sold, and will be sold, end up on the oceans bottom for 1000's of years.
i used to dive in sid /n sannich area , off moses point there is a reef with lots of flashers and downriggers balls ,etc its just out between the point and a offshore rock light marker . we would dive from the marker and reef towards saltspring . a boat to hual up would work best as were so many last dive
@@PNWSamson It's coming man, just stay consistent and there's no way it doesn't pick up eventually! 💪🏻 I always wanted to do what you're doing here in some of the local lakes I camp at. I know I have lost a couple lures in some spots that are popular fishing areas. Others must have done the same. Have a Merry Christmas from one Islander to another
I filmed a few of my fishing lure clean ups, but never posted, like you said it's kind of repetitive. When I'm cleaning up like this, I carry my knife in my hand, so that if I'm ever attached to the bottom I'm not trying to get the knife out. That vis was something else!
That's the way to do it. Be methodical and plan the day out. Certain spots would favor different equipment and set ups. I think some have a "one size fits all" approach and don't adapt for the circumstances in front of them.
Starfish have seemed to rebound. Unfortunately, the Sunstar have yet to. Sunstar graze on urchin and urchin are eating up all the kelp without Sunstar to keep them in check. I'm still seeing many urchin barrens without any Sunstar to be seen.
Promoting good stewardship by cleaning up after others to keep our waters pollution (and fishing lure) free is never a bad thing!! More folks should take an afternoon or two with a buddy and hit spots that are frequented by anglers, just to clean up the old fishing line that can become really disastrous to wildlife, not to mention posing a risk to our fellow divers. Too bad about the drone's SD card, might have been some cool footage on it. I hope the In-Laws liked the crab and oysters, it all looked very tasty (I miss BC oysters). I hope you are all ready for the Holidays and that the kids are looking forward to Christmas, so I guess I should throw my comment in too,...Merry Christmas to You and Your Family, Chris!!! I hope you have an awesome time over the Holidays with good food, good people and great times!!! Take care - Dave
It looks like an amazing fishing spot. I would suggest guys use something like the wicked lure system to keep stuff off the bottom. I hear those lures work like crazy....king killers. Seems those heavy leaded ones hang up a lot
You're doing great things. As a commercial diver I have literally thousands of solo dives on my books. Just be aware of your surroundings and you'll be fine.
haha. With the proper equipment it's not bad at all. I was steaming when I took my wetsuit off. The water without the wetsuit was for sure cold. I like to rinse off though, wetsuits can be pretty nasty.
I watch Pioneer Pauly sniping island creek beds for gold, in the middle of winter . It has to be even colder in that water, because he rarely mentions being warm. I'd be hypothermic in 5 minutes.
Damn, you scooped me, haha, I've been planning on diving there for a while for that very purpose, but it's steep and nasty with 130lbs of scuba and camera gear! I'll do it one of these days.
It had been on my list for a few years too. It looks like it's been a while since anyone dove it. Some of those lures have been down there for a while. Go check it out man! I left lots behind. I was blown away by the spot, way nicer than expected.
When i lived on the northwest coast near Terrace and the Okanagan I used to dive and snorkel for lures. Sometimes i would get many. I would clean them up and sell them for a buck a piece and at Christmas time they made great Christmas tree decorations.
Lol, all those folks were using the wrong lures! Does no one use spoons out there? Wow that's a drop right away. How deep do you figure that is? My guess would be 45ft, but water can be illusional lol. Fanny Bay area just got hit with a oyster recall, so hopefully that's something that stays local, and can't flow in the tide, a far distance.
Your video is editing is fine. Especially in the context of picking up lures. Good little montage, action clips. Personally think the overall tone is a good. I literally jumped from my tv to my phone to comment don’t beat yourself up. (Positive feedback? Ewww right?)
This is something that hate while fishing. When i loose Lures i know they are in the ocean forever. I would love the idea of Biodegradable fishing lures and lines
Yeah, seems like a no brainer. Even those led lures have a shiny plastic film on them. Fishing tackle manufactures need to do better. Think about places like Porlier Pass, off Galiano Island. most of that passage is not diveable and gets hit hard by fishermen. It would have decades of lost lures and lines hung up on rocks and boulders below.
haha good question. Might sell em, clean em up, give em away or melt em down for dive weight. Not sure yet! And thanks for the intel, I'll have to scout that place out one day.
That's what's needed. organic, biodegradable options. Lot's of those lures I found have a plastic wrap on them. Since loosing fishing gear is virtually unavoidable, manufactures should make their products as harmless as possible.
Further inland, I find that fishermen are often losing more lures to the large amounts of tangled line than they are to the snags. Especially withe braid since it breaks down so slowly. I never use line that is too strong for me to break by pulling hard, in this manner it usually breaks at the knot... when one is forced to cut the line it results in massive tangles in the water, that aren't good for anyone.
If you ever want to part with those lures, I refurbish old lures with no shiny stickers and paint. If you are just wanting to get rid of a whole bunch, let me know!
haha, oh beachcombers... I dive there a lot, almost every time I'm there I find equipment. That's a more popular location so it gets cleaned up pretty consistently which is good.
Yeah man, my pleasure. Cheers. And possibly! I'll probably do a give away on my channel. Maybe do a small contest or something like that. Not 100% yet but stay tuned and I'll figure something out eventually haha.
Come over to powell river .artifical reef from ww2 cement boats great walls underwater mermaid statue .great diving.equally great climbing if thats your thing
I saw a couple greenling leaving with a fisherman when I showed up. Besides that, a small school of perch, a few greenling and one very small rockfish. Not very fishy at all.

Don't be ignorant, fishermen are not the problem, after all, you live in a province that still dumps raw sewage into the ocean. That's a far bigger problem.
No offense, but I don't think I'm the ignorant one. For most people, out of sight out of mind. I'm one of the few who actually see what's happening under the surface. And your logic is a little flawed. You wouldn't ignore diabetes if you were diagnosed with lung cancer. Pretty amazing that these lures are on average 10 or so dollars apiece so that's crazy....

I'm guessing these people losing gear are going for Lings, run 100 lb braided and an 80 lb mono leader, you won't lose much gear!
That's a good advice. Preventative is the best option. I'd just have to watch out for the 100lb braided while diving haha...
But when you do lose gear many end up cutting the line because they cant break it, leaving a bunch of it in the water.
Biodegradable Monofilament Line!
That's whatsup. I'd feel less guilty about lost gear.
