Oh Boy… I‘m Reading the Book ‚Escaping the Delta‘ by Elijah Wald.
I read something about Field Hollers for the first time. I used YT to find this here. Great! What a treasure. Tears run down me. I'm from Germany and I'm white….
I admit that this is exactly what I was looking for, but actually I don't know why. The blues and its beginning fascinate me.
Is it really like Elijah Wald writes that these days blues are only for middle-aged white men? That's sad and I'm a little ashamed of it.

Not at all :) As far as I am aware it is alive and well, particularly in the American south. It's a soulful and haunting musical genre and it's well loved for it. As it should be!

Was mich viel mehr schockiert ist, dass du des nicht in der Schule hattest. Wir haben etliche Male über den Beginn der modernen Musik geredet und immer wenn es um Blues ging, waren Field Hollers soziemlich das erste - und irgendwie auch faszinierendste - Gesprächsthema. Alte Aufnahmen wie diese, die wir dort angehört haben sind wie ein Portal in eine andere Zeit, an einen anderen Ort; an dem sich Mühsal und Misere die Hand geben. Verständlich, dass man soetwas nur mit Musik und einem frohen Gemüt durchsteht.

I didn’t know what a holler was sad to say...so I’m reading Stanley Couch’s biography of Charlie Parker and he’s writing about the rise of Ragtime and he talks of all the elements it incorporated and one was hollers so I googled and it led me to here which was a very pleasant surprise as we’re already friends on Facebook..ah the ironies...thanks for posting...
