I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but you're over-relying on the boost with Modern Sonic's levels. I get you wanna go fast all the time, and I can appreciate that, but there *is* a time when precision helps a lot more than wild speed in whatever direction you're facing. Boost is generally best used for straight-aways and getting to places a homing attack won't reach. Might fall off Sky Sanctuary a bit less and keep up the tempo a bit better, that way

Excellent stream, Marco! It’s always a joy to watch newcomers trying out a Sonic game for the first time, and you had a wonderful mindset going into it. Sonic games like this are all about style, fun, and improvement, so don’t worry about everything not clicking right away. @@abicrystalwing1543...Watching him play the fight and compeltely screw up absolutely everything about it hilariously painful. Because the fight is so easy.
The fact that Green Hill Zone was created in 1991, Sonic Generations remade it in 2011, the Sonic franchise has been through some REALLY rough spots, and Green Hill Zone is still amazingly fun in 2024... it's not even nostalgiabait, it just stands the test of time. You're about to go down a rabbit hole of fun, the Sonic Boom cartoon is outrageously funny, Sonic Frontiers is a game that adds the best parts of BotW, and the upcoming Sonic 3 movie is based on the legendary game Sonic Adventure 2, just to name a few of the heavy hitters
The main thing about Sonic games is that they rely on your reaction times and muscle memory. You have to be very familiar with the stage to reach A or even S rank (for Modern Sonic anyway, Classic seems to have a more generous scoring system). Once you're familiar with the stage, playing it the second time could be even more fun than the first time because you know what's gonna happen next and by extension, you know how to avoid the obstacles, which means you keep more of your momentum.
Ohoho, Marco, great! I really want you to play Shadow Generations and experience the ending cutscene, because it has a piece of music that really tugs at my heartstrings in that scene and would love to see you analyze it. Also, it's Shadow and I gotta promote my man. I'm glad you're having fun with the game either way though. Here's hoping Sonic Team has more ideas it can cook for the next games!
I have been brought back here once again by the all-knowing algorithm, first with your introduction to the Ace Combat series and now for Sonic the Hedgehog, and you have yet to play OMORI, I hope that one is in the horizon too.
That whole Shadow fight was just “when you ignore the annoying tutorial character’s incredibly obvious hints” (love you Marco, you’re still a better gamer than Arin Hanson ever will be)
One thing i love about these games is that the level design pushes you replay the levels to learn them and gradually get better to the point where getting a perfect run is more than getting an S rank at the end. It feels so cool man.
@@MarcoMeatball oh hey since I have your attention, I’ve got a little advice before you play Shadow Generations. In the lead up to release they made a short 3-episode animated prologue that you should watch before starting called Dark Beginnings- it provides a bit of extra context about some very important characters, and is also just really fucking cool.
Despite Popular belief, Sonic is not a franchise about going fast. It's about being patient, learning the level, and controlling your speed. One performs their worst when they boost/spindash carelessly, which you started to learn especially in Crisis City act 2
I really hope you stream Sonic Mania some day! It's not super long either, and it's just pure fun the whole way through, not to mention Tee Lopes' STELLAR soundtrack for it!
When I first played this game, it was with a keyboard I had no idea sidestepping or drift existed I somehow beat it all, including the Shadow fight, even though it took me MUCH longer than even Marco
This was a wonderful stream, I'm so glad you've had a mostly positive introduction to the Sonic community It's been great to see you enjoy this franchise!
Generations goes pretty hard on the GUN chase, but I do think you'd appreciate the way SA2 implements the level. The game cold opens to City Escape, and it really showcases its own vibes in comparison to what Generations attempts to recapture.
Sorry I’ve actually died as a result…… my funeral is next week . No but I’ve gotta say, this being your first sonic game you’ve been doing a pretty damn good job aside from the minor forgetting what the buttons do hiccups 👍
What a perfect find on my Birthday, reacting to the Music in real time while playing... Can't wait to see you go through Shadow Generations too (I've seen that VOD is already up) Already beat the game in full, Platinum Trophy and everything and both Games 100%, on PS5 and currently going through to do the same for the PS4 Version (playing it on my PS5 still, annoyingly Shadow Gens is only 30fps in that Version though 😅 already did Sonic Generations 100% in that Version)
Love to see you're enjoying the game, like others said, Gens is a great introduction to the series Now, the thing about Sonic games is that they're made with replay value in mind; You are meant to get hit a lot your first time and then come back to memorize and master the stage Also, by rule of thumb the higher routes of the levels are usually faster but more difficult to stay on, while the lower routes are easier but filled with a lot of things that waste your time, like switches or thight platforming sections
Generations is only sonic game that I played, when I watched stream it reminded me time when as a kid I played it. I think I died as much as Marko did on this stream
Also you don't know it, but a lot of iconic moments in this game are remakes of iconic moments in the original versions of these stages. Example: Sonic running down the building in Speed highway camera in his face. That happens in the original game. It's from Sonic Adventure, the first mainsteam 3D Sonic game. Example 2: Sonic Adventure 2 we got the stage City Escape and you start off snowboarding down the streets, hit a trolley cart, at some point you run down the building and get chased by a giant crazy truck. They remake all those moments in this version of the stage too, especially for Modern Sonic. And the last 2 stages almost feel like playing the original games themselves because those games being referenced were so recent that Generations wasn't that different from them. In fact, those last 2 games before Generations also had the BOOST which prior 3D Sonic games did not.
if you can i definetly do recomend Sonic Mania! it's so much fun, and personally has one of the best soundtracks of the franchise, and that is saying something lol, i watched the whole stream it was a blast, i love people who enjoy music while playing!
I still hope for a Sonic CD music comparison video (US vs JP), there's been extensive debate on which soundtrack is better. I grew up with the US version, so it has my vote.
Sonic Mania is hoenstly one of the best first timers for sonic, I know sonic 2 or 3&k works but Sonic Mania is more suitable for the modern audience being introduced to classic sonic. not to mention its GREAT MUSIC!!!
So a little fun fact about the intro theme song for sonic, they paired it with Hall of the Mountain King for the intro to the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon back in the 90's. Arguably my first exposure to true classical music when I was 5 or 6. Blew my mind when I got to 6th grade and heard the mountain king on its own when I tried to do band lol.
My brother has played sonic, including this game. I’ve watched him play it but honestly had no idea what was happening. Watching this was like learning with someone who is as clueless as me. It’s nice!
53:44 Same. I feel similarly about Green Hill as well, but who doesn't at this point? I can respect both for being part of what started it all, but I find them to be just okay, especially compared to later intro stages. I *easily* find just about every other Sonic game's intro stages to be infinitely more interesting. But that's a good thing. That's how it should be.
awesome stream I think you're a natural at sonic! with no prior experience you did extremely well :) though I must admit the chat was extremely annoying especially during shadow boss fight haha the backseaters are awful, I'd recommend reading the chat much less just to annoy those kiddos ;)
Some tips for Sonic gaming. Higher routes are faster but harder to stay on. Middle routes are in between and a bit more platforming based and lower routes are very slow and focused on platforming. The game also demands you pay attention and not just hold right, thus when in parts where you’re just doing that, they’re setting you up for a trap. Either spikes, or something to jump over. It’s not just about going fast. In order to be able to go fast and get better times, you gotta pay attention to the rules of how the level design works. Once you know that stuff, Sonic becomes easy. The game gives you plenty of opportunities to climb to the top again and then run on the top route, so keep out for platforms leading upwards.
Hello Marco! Please please please take my advice! I am one of Sonic CD's biggest fans and I highly recommend that you listen to the original JPN/EU Sonic CD OST. I love that entire game. The premise is that there are 7 zones in total but each Zone has a Past, Present, Good Future, and Bad Future track that take main motifs from the "Present" track and elevate them on the other 3. Then, those other 3 born from the "Present" track take motifs from the other 3 tracks to create a timeline of sorts for each song and it's very cool! Also, the reason I specify JPN/EU is because those songs are typically more popular with the Sonic fanbase, but ALSO because the SEGA Sound Team was able to actually make more interesting music since Sonic CD was a CD-insert game. This means there was a lot of samples from popular Western bands/artists/groups and I think you would find it very interesting! Here is a link in regards to what I am talking about - th-cam.com/video/mnx7EBUHv_s/w-d-xo.html I am very glad you like Stardust Speedway! I love that track. I hope you cover Sonic CD JPN/EU and America OSTs at some point! Thanks Marco!
3:09:10 for some context, Sonic 06 is officially named "Sonic The Hedgehog", named after the very first game as it was meant to be the next generation for the franchise... due to this naming choice, fans have given it the name "Sonic 06" and in my opinion has one of the best soundtracks the reason why chat was saying it was a bad game is because the development team was cut in half with the other half working on Sonic and The Secret Rings, and then Sega rushed the remaining developers in Sonic Team with Sonic 06 for a holiday release in 2006 causing it to release as a very broken and buggy game it also had a code name, Sonic Next Gen the game is getting a fanmade remake that fixes the game up, known as Project 2006
Essentially, each level is taken from one game in Sonic's history, you have levels for the first three games (Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2 and Sonic 3/& Knuckles), then the early 2000s games (Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes) and then the late 2000s games (Sonic 06, Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors).
48:29 First time ever playing a Sonic game and my dude is already hitting the speedrun strats! You hit Metal Sonic before he got a chance to attack! :D Edit: so glad you got to experience the glory that is the song Super Sonic Racing against Tails AND the original!
The core conceit of this particular sonic game is that due to the time travel sonic is revisiting places from his past, every single level is a remake of a level from a previous sonic game, one level per game
Hello, I'm a bit late finding your channel and your video reactions. The Metal Sonic bossfight's song is taken from the game, Sonic CD. Sonic CD has a unique mechanic which allows Sonic to travel through time and the level's song changes when Sonic is either in the past, present, bad future, or good future. The specific song that's remixed in this bossfight is called "Stardust Speedway (Bad Future)". But from the Japanese version of the game. When the game was brought over to the US, they changed the soundtrack for the American audience (Note: Except the past themes for the levels. Those were left alone.) [BTW You can also unlock the remix of the US version of Stardust Speedway (Bad Future) in Sonic Generations!] You were asking for song recommendations before, and I figured a fun video for you would be a comparison of the US and Japanese soundtracks of Sonic CD. As well as comparing the remixes of the songs from the different time eras. While most fans prefer the Japanese soundtrack, it'd be interesting to hear an outside perspective. The US version also has my favorite vocal Sonic theme, "Sonic Boom". You also seem to really enjoy "Can you feel the sunshine" and "Super Sonic Racing". Those tracks came from a Racing spinoff game called "Sonic R". All the tracks in that game have vocal themes by the same singer and composer. [One more thing: If you like Sonic Generations, another good gateway game into the franchise is the "Sonic Origins" Collection which contain the original classic games, 1,2, 3 & Knuckles, & of course, Sonic CD!] Sorry for the long message. It's been fun listening to your reactions. Thank you!
how did he struggle with the bubble shield so much of all things???? like hes really really good for a first time playthrough but the bounchy ground pound stumped him? magnificent
oh also, when you get to shadow generations most of the music is pretty good but.... oohh... boy... what they did to to chaos islands 6th movement.... ooooohhhhh lord...
You should definitely do a video on this games OST now that you have played it. This is the first livestream of yours I have watched and it was awesome!
...I wish the people in the chat had explained the Shadow rival fight better. When you collect the power ups and go into the meteor smash phase, you don't have to jump into the meteors. The boost is forced on you, and you just need to focus on, quite literally, running a whole train's worth of boost energy on Shadow.
The main Sonic cast is divided into four teams, Team Sonic, Team Rose, Team Dark and Team Chaotix. Team Sonic is made up of Sonic (Fastest hedgehog in the world), Tails (Boy genius) and Knuckles (Guardian of the Master Emerald). Team Rose is made up of Amy (Sonic's girl), Cream (A young rabbit girl) and Big (A large purple cat). Team Dark is made up of Shadow (The ultimate lifeform, not actually a hedgehog), Rouge (The bat girl, she's also a spy) and Omega (One of Eggman's discarded robots). Team Chaotix is made up of Espio (The pink guy, he's a ninja), Charmy (The bee) and Vector (The rapper croc). Finally there's Blaze and Silver, who don't belong to any specific team but sometimes help Sonic, Blaze is the light purple cat and she comes from an alternate dimension, Silver is a grey hedgehog who has psychic powers who comes from the future.
The channel Outside Xtra did a fun video of trying to determine how fast Sonic can really run. And the number is way higher than you'd think, like around Mach 6 or higher. The part in Escape from the City where they say "Rolling around at the Speed of Sound" is basically talking about him at a leisurely jog. Shadow can match his speed but that might be due to his jet shoes. And only with the Chaos Emerald can he outrun Sonic I believe. It's ba fin video to check out.

I have been brought back here once again by the all-knowing algorithm, first with your introduction to the Ace Combat series and now for Sonic the Hedgehog, and you have yet to play OMORI, I hope that one is in the horizon too.
1:36:00 YES PLEASE ITS SUCH A GOOD GAME! This game rocks too, of course
That whole Shadow fight was just “when you ignore the annoying tutorial character’s incredibly obvious hints” (love you Marco, you’re still a better gamer than Arin Hanson ever will be)
Ya I fucked up LOL
One thing i love about these games is that the level design pushes you replay the levels to learn them and gradually get better to the point where getting a perfect run is more than getting an S rank at the end. It feels so cool man.
Playing generations 1 and experiencing both styles of sonic play was a smart decision. Wp enjoyed the perspective
Dude Marco sounds SO fucking distraught every time he gets hit
Me sad no rings
@@MarcoMeatball oh hey since I have your attention, I’ve got a little advice before you play Shadow Generations. In the lead up to release they made a short 3-episode animated prologue that you should watch before starting called Dark Beginnings- it provides a bit of extra context about some very important characters, and is also just really fucking cool.
@@xandoofi9393 how short?
@@MarcoMeatball 14 minutes total, there’s a compilation of all 3 episodes on the official sonic TH-cam channel.
dark beginnings is awesome
50:12 that’s the track that got me into sonic music
Just coming back here to say: What a wonderful stream!
I love that we've successfully converted this man into being a sonic fan lol
Despite Popular belief, Sonic is not a franchise about going fast. It's about being patient, learning the level, and controlling your speed. One performs their worst when they boost/spindash carelessly, which you started to learn especially in Crisis City act 2
I really hope you stream Sonic Mania some day! It's not super long either, and it's just pure fun the whole way through, not to mention Tee Lopes' STELLAR soundtrack for it!
Makes me so happy to see people playing Sonic for the first time, and loving what i think is the main aspect THE MUSIC! Great stream
i can´t wait till he hears rooftop run act 2
When I first played this game, it was with a keyboard
I had no idea sidestepping or drift existed
I somehow beat it all, including the Shadow fight, even though it took me MUCH longer than even Marco
47:44: I adore how much you appreciate Metal Sonic's theme. It is such a good time funky vibe
This was a wonderful stream, I'm so glad you've had a mostly positive introduction to the Sonic community It's been great to see you enjoy this franchise!
still can't believe you're getting into sonic! looking forward to the next stream ❤❤
This was so entertaining to watch keep it up! ❤
Generations goes pretty hard on the GUN chase, but I do think you'd appreciate the way SA2 implements the level. The game cold opens to City Escape, and it really showcases its own vibes in comparison to what Generations attempts to recapture.
We got a new Sonic fan, let's gooo! =D
Looking forward to watching the Shadow Gens stream! =)
DUDE I AM BEGGING YOU PLAY SONIC MANIA. Like actually it has one of the best gaming osts of all time im so fr
watching you assume you had to time the bubble shield's bound jump as you hit the ground instead of at any point during the jump was so painful lmao
I hope you recover
Sorry I’ve actually died as a result…… my funeral is next week .
No but I’ve gotta say, this being your first sonic game you’ve been doing a pretty damn good job aside from the minor forgetting what the buttons do hiccups 👍
2:14:04 - I just wanna say that Sonic Heroes is my fav sonic game and I love specifically these Guitar!
What a perfect find on my Birthday, reacting to the Music in real time while playing... Can't wait to see you go through Shadow Generations too (I've seen that VOD is already up)
Already beat the game in full, Platinum Trophy and everything and both Games 100%, on PS5 and currently going through to do the same for the PS4 Version (playing it on my PS5 still, annoyingly Shadow Gens is only 30fps in that Version though 😅 already did Sonic Generations 100% in that Version)
Happy birthday!!!!!
@@MarcoMeatball Aye, Thanks Marco 🥰
Love to see you're enjoying the game, like others said, Gens is a great introduction to the series
Now, the thing about Sonic games is that they're made with replay value in mind;
You are meant to get hit a lot your first time and then come back to memorize and master the stage
Also, by rule of thumb the higher routes of the levels are usually faster but more difficult to stay on, while the lower routes are easier but filled with a lot of things that waste your time, like switches or thight platforming sections
3:35:50 seeing a video of a level analysis of this stage and seeing the reaction to this part just proves that video to be so accurate
Im streaming it next :)
4:35 we are still asking that question. Welcome to the fanbase
I still hope for a Sonic CD music comparison video (US vs JP), there's been extensive debate on which soundtrack is better. I grew up with the US version, so it has my vote.
I can't believe that more time has passed between Sonic Generations and now than between Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Generations... lol
Damn
Thanks YT algorithm! This is pure gold 🥇. Sonic's music is just something else. Subscribed
Glad you enjoy it!
Sonic Mania is hoenstly one of the best first timers for sonic, I know sonic 2 or 3&k works but Sonic Mania is more suitable for the modern audience being introduced to classic sonic. not to mention its GREAT MUSIC!!!
Guess I’m streaming that next
18 minutes of the shadow rival battle is hilarious
So a little fun fact about the intro theme song for sonic, they paired it with Hall of the Mountain King for the intro to the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon back in the 90's. Arguably my first exposure to true classical music when I was 5 or 6. Blew my mind when I got to 6th grade and heard the mountain king on its own when I tried to do band lol.
Oh cool!
My brother has played sonic, including this game. I’ve watched him play it but honestly had no idea what was happening. Watching this was like learning with someone who is as clueless as me. It’s nice!
53:44
Same.
Except for maybe Emerald Hill. But even then the name sounds better imo and its music is WAY more of a banger than Green Hill's.
awesome stream I think you're a natural at sonic! with no prior experience you did extremely well :) though I must admit the chat was extremely annoying especially during shadow boss fight haha the backseaters are awful, I'd recommend reading the chat much less just to annoy those kiddos ;)
😂😂
Nice stream! It's awesome seeing a casual like you experiencing Sonic for the first time, you played pretty as well 💪Welcome to the club lol
Thanks for the visit
Here is a link in regards to what I am talking about - th-cam.com/video/mnx7EBUHv_s/w-d-xo.html
I am very glad you like Stardust Speedway! I love that track. I hope you cover Sonic CD JPN/EU and America OSTs at some point! Thanks Marco!
I love when people get into this franchise ♥
3:09:10 for some context, Sonic 06 is officially named "Sonic The Hedgehog", named after the very first game as it was meant to be the next generation for the franchise... due to this naming choice, fans have given it the name "Sonic 06" and in my opinion has one of the best soundtracks
the reason why chat was saying it was a bad game is because the development team was cut in half with the other half working on Sonic and The Secret Rings, and then Sega rushed the remaining developers in Sonic Team with Sonic 06 for a holiday release in 2006 causing it to release as a very broken and buggy game
it also had a code name, Sonic Next Gen
the game is getting a fanmade remake that fixes the game up, known as Project 2006
Edit: so glad you got to experience the glory that is the song Super Sonic Racing against Tails AND the original!
2:56:40 I didn't see anyone mention it in the live chat, but the theme that plays here is called "Emerald Beach" from Sonic Battle.
Marco, would you listen to the entire Sonic 30th anniversary concert? It's about 2 hours long. Would be a cool Livestream!!
Those were left alone.)
[BTW You can also unlock the remix of the US version of Stardust Speedway (Bad Future) in Sonic Generations!]
You were asking for song recommendations before, and I figured a fun video for you would be a comparison of the US and Japanese soundtracks of Sonic CD.
[One more thing: If you like Sonic Generations, another good gateway game into the franchise is the "Sonic Origins" Collection which contain the original classic games, 1,2, 3 & Knuckles, & of course, Sonic CD!]
Sorry for the long message. It's been fun listening to your reactions. Thank you!
This stream was great, I wish I could watch more of it. By the way, will you also stream Shadow Generations?
Tomorrow!
Can you please react to the whole sonic cd ost please@@MarcoMeatball
@@MarcoMeatballthanks, cant wait!!
"This is hard," he says in the third level. XD
how did he struggle with the bubble shield so much of all things???? like hes really really good for a first time playthrough but the bounchy ground pound stumped him? magnificent
oh also, when you get to shadow generations most of the music is pretty good but.... oohh... boy... what they did to to chaos islands 6th movement.... ooooohhhhh lord...
You should definitely do a video on this games OST now that you have played it. This is the first livestream of yours I have watched and it was awesome!
Thanks for the idea!
0:49 sonic generation was released in 2011, 12 years after release of the console
1:51:26 "as the kids would say" lmao
47:47 my favorite song from sonic
Also, general rule of thumb: higher paths are faster, lower paths are slower.
1:13:21 “sonic… uh… sonic SHYIT”
"Who's the croc?"
Vector always draws the attention of the new fans, XD.
...I wish the people in the chat had explained the Shadow rival fight better.
When you collect the power ups and go into the meteor smash phase, you don't have to jump into the meteors. The boost is forced on you, and you just need to focus on, quite literally, running a whole train's worth of boost energy on Shadow.
i was being sarcastic ;)
The Sonic R tracks and "You're My Hero" were all composed by Richard Jacques. Figured I'd let you know since you seem to dig them so much!
The one thing every sonic fan can agree on is that for basically every single game, the soundtrack always slaps (with the exception of Sonic Boom)
02:03:18 - Truck-kun is back with a vengeance 🤣
The channel Outside Xtra did a fun video of trying to determine how fast Sonic can really run. And the number is way higher than you'd think, like around Mach 6 or higher. The part in Escape from the City where they say "Rolling around at the Speed of Sound" is basically talking about him at a leisurely jog.
Shadow can match his speed but that might be due to his jet shoes. And only with the Chaos Emerald can he outrun Sonic I believe.
It's ba fin video to check out.
So cheesed he kept dying before the best part of City Escape's new version 💀
3:35:55 yep, that's the reaction we we're waiting for
1:57:29
Nuh man, I'm laughing it's so much fun to see your first experience 😂
48:00 Bro, we need to get him to listen to Sonic CD someday
