  • INSIDE PIANOS explores the piano technicians penchant for creating their own tools with a few examples from host Ben Blozan and RPT John Johansen of Mosaic Pianos in Greensboro, NC.

NOTE: I have a bad habit of referring to key "dip" as key "drop". "Dip" is the correct term, and the distinction is important since "drop" is an actual term for an action adjustment. My apologies, dear viewer.

I came for the amusing dorkiness and wasn't disappointed.

Love this video! Very neat to see the shop and tools that John has created. Very impressive.

Thanks, Laura! In my humble opinion this video has not received the love I feel it deserves compared to the others. So it’s always nice when someone enjoys it.

Please make a video explaining the process to become a piano technician from the perspective of a brand new no experience person. Thanks!

John is adorable! Hope he becomes a recurring character.

Don't worry. He will, whether he likes it or not. It was very funny watching how much he didn't want to watch himself when I shared the video with him.

Just bought a 1949 Baldwin R for under $3K with some faith (instilled by your channel) that I could do some of the work needed to make it more playable. Your '59 Model L video and SD6 video also gave me some hopes that there might be gold in them thar hills. Having spent available cash on the piano, I've come back to learn about homemade tools. Managed to fashion a functional let-off driver and a couple other tools which should serve until the piano fund is slushy again. Will be going to Harbor Freight to try to find something that I could turn into a repetition spring tensioner. I know it has an adjustment screw but the spring isn't within the parameter where the screw has any effect. Anyhow... I love your channel. It's peaceful. Thanks from a guitar player who really needed a new expensive musical hobby. Also, I really enjoy your piano playing snippets.

Hi David, I’m glad I could fuel your expensive hobby. I hope your Harbor Freight tool mod worked out. Every once in a while I’m tempted to ask a Home Depot employee where the piano tool section is. I don’t know if it’s just to pretend for just a moment that we live in such a world or what.
Good luck and let me know if you post a video of your R.

I was so excited to make this episode but it gets so few views compared to the others. So I appreciate your enthusiasm.

Well...you can't. It's, as they say, not available in stores. Maybe you could make your own?
