- Originally release in 1987, A Momentary Lapse of Reason was the first Pink Floyd album released without Roger Waters in the band. The album has been the topic of many debates over the years since it's release. One big topic for debate has been the sound / overall production of the album. David Gilmour went back to the production desk to "remix & update" the album for inclusion on a boxed set called "Pink Floyd - The Later Years". This new version of the album was eventually turned into a standalone release on vinyl. The vinyl release is cut at 45rpm and spread over 2 LPs. In this video, I'll share my thoughts on the packaging, value and of course the overall sound of the 2 LP set.

Great video IGV! I think it’s the gated reverb on the drums that gives it that dated 80’s sound. It was fine in small doses, but it really saturated the 80’s sound. I actually love the album and didn’t know there was an update to the sound. I am looking forward to a listen.
Thanks for watching and the comment. I would definitely recommend streaming the updated / remixed version to see what you think. Only speaking for myself, I wanted to like it a lot more than I did.
I love both versions of this album 💿 Gilmour is the guitar God!!!!
I'm a big Gilmour fan too. I need to go back and revisit the remix. I haven't listened to it again since I made this video.
Great video. I really A Momentary Lapse of Reason, but I also enjoy 80's music. It definitely fits in a different category than The Wall or Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here. I have this new remix and the 2016 remaster both on vinyl. The overall sound is a little more laid back on the new remix, while the original mix is a little more aggressive. The actual production differences seem pretty subtle to me, but you could probably tell better than me. Cheers!
Thanks for watching. It's certainly a subtle difference in parts too. Thanks for watching and the comment :)
Enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this one.another great review🔥
Thanks brother. I'm sure you know, but Floyd is very close to my heart so I generally have a lot of thoughts to share on all of their releases.
For me, the original has more punchy and agressive sound, while the remixed version is more mellow and relaxed. I like both of them.
That's a fair assessment. I don't think I've listened to the remix since I made this video. I should give it another go.
@@InfectiousGroovePodcast I am also somehow attached to the original version and had to listen to the remix a few times before i realised it is actualy a chill out edition of the original. It is not bad at all, just different. Drums on the original mix do often hit so hard. It has that 80's dreamy atmosphere, which I realy like, but it is certainly not so chilling, compare to the remixed version.
I have this on CD. Was glad to have it since the last copy I owned was a cassette back in high school. I was curious enough about the updated sound but honestly I couldn't tell much of a difference. Saw in on vinyl at Walmart. Went back the next day to grab it and it was gone so I got in on CD instead which is probably a good thing since it won't get many spins from me. I like it well enough but have other music that needs my attention now :)
That's more or less how I feel. They got me to buy it because I'm just a Floyd completionist, which is my own fault lol. But I never see myself spinning it much at all the future.
Great Video
Thanks. I've got quite a few more Pink Floyd related videos on the channel. Let me know if there's any specific videos ideas you have for the future :)
A Momentary Lapse of Reason has never been one of my favorite Pink Floyd albums (it's actually in my bottom three), but I like this updated version of the album a lot more than the original. I think Nick's re-recorded drums add a better overall sound, and while it doesn't make a huge difference it does give it more of a traditional Pink Floyd sound. Running at just over 51 minutes in length, it's probably a tad too long for a single LP.
My only reasoning on it being a single LP is that the original sounds just fine, but I get the point. I may give it another listen to see if I notice the differences you mentioned more too. But like you, this is in my bottom 3, so it'll be a while before I think to pull it again lol
I feel like you did a fantastic job with this video. I probably like this album a little bit better than you do but all your critiques were valid. I have the remastered copy from I think a couple years ago when they took out some of the 80 isms and I wonder what the difference between that and this are. I’m content with my copy.
Thanks so much for watching and the comment. I could be wrong, but I think the version you have is the same audio that's on this LP. And yeah, I might give this album a little harder time than I need to. I wanted to make clear that I'm not the "no Waters, no Floyd guy" though. While I love Roger, I think the remaining 3 have potential to put out great music without him. There's some good ideas on A Momentary Lapse, but I feel like the 3 of them REALLY knocked it out of the park with The Division Bell. I feel like that album being as good as it is caused me to actually like Momentary Lapse less lol
@@InfectiousGroovePodcast Oh I totally agree that they realized more of their potential with Division Bell. Without a doubt. MLOR is far from my favorite Floyd. I am a huge fan of Roger’s contribution of Floyd. His direction helped sculpt that band.
@@vikingbrace : Sadly, Roger seems to be ageing not very well. His obsession with totally controlling all things Pink Floyd is not healthy. His support for Russia against Ukraine is grossly misjudged and even at his great age, he hasn’t shown that he has the mental and intellectual strength and fortitude to move on from the terrible events of the WW2 (I know his Dad was tragically killed in that war. Millions of others suffered too but they don’t inflict that suffering on everybody else). Roger has lost me as a result…
I’ve got the 2011 digital remaster on CD and also the 2016 remaster on vinyl. So what’s the difference with this newer one here…?
And now there’s also the new remix of “Animals” coming out this week. I also have that on CD and vinyl. So what’s with that newer one too…?
The newest edition of A Momentary Lapse and the forthcoming edition of Animals aren't just remasters. They're new remixes of the original albums.
What do you make of David Gilmore's version of Elvis song Don't?
I wanted to love it but didn't like it much. Elvis and Floyd are huge things for me, so I just glad to see David doing any Elvis stuff at all.
