- The Winchester SXP Field compact is a reliable and fast shooting shotgun. In this video, I review a 20 gauge Winchester SXP Compact that is chambered for 2 3/4 - 3 inch shells. For the price, this firearm has a nice wood finish and the metal components are matte black, which helps to prevent surface rust. Personally, I can see this shotgun being a perfect match for somebody who wants a bush gun for small game animals.

I watched a video on the history of Winchester shotguns not long after I bought my SXP. Apparently the slide racking halfway back is a feature that was designed for added speed and has been on Winchester shotguns for years. It was pretty well liked back in the day because it allowed the shooter to cycle rounds pretty fast, compared to other shotguns at the time

Great video. Dang, I spent a lot of cash over the years on Mossbergs. SXP is now the Number one shotgun for me. Have sold off most of the Mossbergs, Plan on getting more Winchester. So much more bang for the buck and better handling. Bravo to Winchester.

Nice gun, great for bunnies. I bought a Benelli Ultralight years ago, can't imagine ever using anything else.
Benelli makes a fine gun. I love my montefeltro!

I bought one last year and your vid was part of my research. I like the feel and it points well, and it's a fairly light shotgun. It's a reproduction of the Winchester 1300 from years ago. It has the rotating bolt like the 1300 had. I think that absorbs a little recoil. I could only find it in the synthetic black version. I like the gun so much that I regret not buying the much more expensive upland field model.

I have the black metal/polymer Winchester SXP Camp/Field Combo 12 Gauge Shotgun version which comes with an 18 inch (camp) barrel and a 28 inch (field) barrel. It also came with the same chokes and plug you mentioned. I bought it from Cabela's here in the East Coast of Canada about 3 years ago. At about 400.00 CDN, it is a great little package and a lot of fun to shoot. Very low kick back due to the well designed butt. And as you mentioned, it is designed to kick the action partially back (using gas from a previous shot). As a result of that backward motion, there is less movement the shooter has to perform to chamber the next round. Almost a semi-pump action you could say! I quess!?! Anyway, good review. We need more reviews by Canadians like you with guns we can buy here. Thanks!

I really like where the pump release is on these Winchester shotguns, I Bought one when I was a sophomore in high school. Just saw one of these and the button was in the same spot very intuitive

I’m looking for a first shotgun to clay shoot some and rabbit hunt…home protection too, I don’t need anything fancy. Just reliable and under $400, the SXP field pump action shotgun caught my eye for only $369….this a good gun for my needs? Also is 12 gauge too much for rabbits or should I consider 20 gauge?
12 gauge is okay for rabbits as long as you use light loads. My preference for rabbits is a 20 gauge, but I hunt over dogs in thick cover usually. 12 gauge is definitely an all around shotgun round. Thanks for watching. 😁

My wife is a tiny little thing at 5' and 115 lbs. Think this would be a good choice for a first shotgun to take her duck/pheasant hunting?
Absolutely. I would recommend it for sure. Affordable, smaller in nature, and a reliable firearm.

@@colbybrady2187 I’d definitely recommend it for youth and women. Even for a guy like me, it makes a perfect bush gun for small game. I stand at 6ft1 and it shoulders nice.

It patterns great for a cheaper shotgun. I am happy with how it patterns with all chokes provided. I did purchase an extended choke for it for times when I know I'll need more distant shots. Thanks for watching 😁.
My Defender will eject the hull like a semi auto without the left hand on the slide grip. Rapid fire on the range often has people thinking it's a semi auto and are surprised to see the slide action.

Some other video reviews demonstrate the inertia assist that eject hulls with just one hand on the striker/stock. They say heavier loads are more likely to push the pump grip all the way back and eject the hull than lighter loads.

Just a bead at the front!
Stoeger P312 will auto eject completely if you use anything heavier than 36 gram.
I was wondering whether that was a deliberate design thing, since it does this so reliably.
Would it take some getting use too? If its someones first time shooting a winchester sxp???? Im really debating on getting the field model or black shadow, 12 gauge… i want a pump gun as back up.
I usually use an over/under or a semi. Just practice a little bit with the pump and you won't have any issue. If I were to buy a pump today it would either be the Winchest SXP or a Browning BPS. The newer Remington 870s and Mossberg 500s aren't made like the use to be.

Hey I enjoyed the video I’ve been doing lots of research to find out if this would be a good first shotgun for me I think I’m bout to buy it but before I do how do you think a 15 year old would be able to handle this I have experience with firearms but I haven’t shot a shotgun before so I’m not completely sure...

This exact gun would be perfect for all shooters. 20 gauge offers enough of a shot charge to take down most waterfowl and small game, with a fraction of the recoil. Would be a great shotgun to start on! Thanks for watching 😀

@@Huntingpros Some reviewers claim the inertia-assisedt slide-action on the SXP makes the recoil softer than other pump shotguns. A semi-auto inertia operated shotgun would likely have less recoil than the SXP and a semi-auto gas operated shotgun should have less recoil than an inertia operated one as you likely know. I just thought I would add this for those who may not know.

I’m trying to buy my first shotgun. Can’t decide between this one in a 26” barrel or an 870 express. Any input?
I own both. I love my 870 to be honest. Hasn't failed me yet. However, I must say, this new SXP I tried out is quite nice. I don't think you could make a bad choice purchasing either gun.
I would say winchester, just because of its more intuitive control's. Safety is forward of the trigger guard and pump release is aft of the trigger guard easily accessable with the middle finger of the shooting hand without compromising your grip.
My dad got me one of these I still have to wait tho, I’m 13 and it’s going to be my first time shooting a gun am honestly really nervous.
Don't be nervous. Just remember the key factors of gun safety. Always point the firearm in a safe direction, keep your finger away from the trigger until you are ready to shoot and always assume the gun is loaded. You'll have a blast! Happy shooting and thanks for watching 😁.

I’ve got an sxp field in 12 gauge and it will not take shells into the mag tube at all when the trigger group is locked in I’ve looked everywhere and searched everything i thought I could
That's too bad... Never heard of this issue. I would try contacting Winchester directly.

Hmmm... Feels nothing like my Remington 870 or Mossberg 500!

@@Adventurer1990 I feel it cycles a bit different than the 870 I grew up shooting. Obviously very similar in functionality as they are all pumps. The position of the safety feels different and it swings differently.
@@Huntingpros Thanks! I decided to purchase the SXP as my very first shotgun. I initially wanted to get either the Mossberg 500 or Remington 870, but they are incredibly hard to come by right now and the SXP Field with the 28-inch barrel became suddenly available so I decided to jump on it (I also really wanted to get a wood stock shotgun, just because I like their look). I plan to use the gun for small game and turkey/upland/waterfowl hunting next season. Haven't had the chance to try the shotgun yet though. For my first bolt-action rifle, I bought the Savage Axis 2 XP. I hope I'll win a tag for elk this year here in New Mexico.
Are the rails that the pump rides on made of metal or plastic?
I'm fairly certain they are metal. I don't have it in front of me at the moment. Do some companies .ame them with plastic? I've never heard of that. Doesn't sound very durable.
@@Huntingpros the other day I looked at a Mossberg 500 that was at Walmart and the rails were plastic. There was a ton of play in the fore end because of it. I was really surprised by that because 500s have such a good reputation. Maybe there’s a lower cost version just for Walmart? Im not sure
@@nittanyburg20 interesting! I never thought to look at the SXP for that. I have a Mossberg 500 .410. There is considerably more play in the slide than the SXP. I can definitely attest to that. I did a review of that gun on my channel as well.

How big of a guy are you? I am interested in this, and I am 5'10, ~240lbs
I'm 6ft, 225lbs and it feels nice and snug against my shouldn't. Don't get me wrong, it's not a full length of pull, but for a bush gun it is great.

Worst part of this review is you not wearing ear protection!
