Yeah, the Gran Turismo academy was launched with GT6 and produced some drivers who are still currently active and successful. I got quite far in the academy as a regular top 100 driver in the weekly events but wasn't anywhere near as good as those who got to the final stages, I was also on the upper end of the age range so even if I'd been good enough my chances of being selected were low. There are also a good few sim racers who are making the leap from games to real life and doing really well, sim racing is one of those things where the skillset is actually transferable
For anyone watching this video months after it came out like me, the Gran Turismo movie was actually pretty good. Great soundtrack and sound effects, solid enough plot, and the actors are superb.
The weird thing is he used to be the one that used his brain the most.. He was the most competent of all of them and actually bothered to learn. The moment others came along doing that though he just stopped. Now people like Ped do all the thinking for him. Or on Vault Hunters it's Harry doing all the thinking.

the gran turismo movie is losely based on the Gran Turismo Academy program, Basically that put a contest into the game where the 50 fastest drivers would get to take part in a real world academy that involved fitness, driving and more with the group eventually being reduced to one. The few winners of this have actually gone on to do well and even win races irl against some pretty good oponents

Okay, as for driver licenses in other countries, there are a bunch of traffic convention, mainly the Geneva and Vienna ones. It allows participating countries to intermingle with their licenses because the rules are the same anyway. If you want to renew your license however, most countries require that you be a resident of that country. In case the two countries do not agree that their licenses are intercompatible, you generally have to localize it by whatever rules that country sets out.

I've been watching drifting championships for years and in that time i've noticed "the gran tourismo academy" which is a team that recruits actual gran tourismo players to perform in the novice class are actually extremely good. there have been debates for a while about whether their should be another class of newcomers specifically for the recruits that come from racing simulators. on the other hand throwing a professional sim drifter into a super high end drift car they'll have a hard time adjusting. apologies for the paragraph but car talk make my monkey brain oooo ooo aaa aaa
its also based on a real guy, jan mardenbrough (sp?) who i think went from Gran Turismo to driving irl. Theres also James Baldwin. But they haven't had crazy amounts of success (yet). Almost every single racing driver out there has a sim at home to practice on, Max V being the best of them all currently and also being a sim racer/streamer. I think though that sims at most teach you tracks, and teach you racecraft. You can be prepared for a situation before going into it. But without driving the IRL car, you just can't get used to each one's little intricacies and habits and so get faster on it. So its more beneficial to get IRL experience and get used to the car and then use sims to up your game IMO, rather than starting on sims and moving up to IRL cars

The US Army actually developed and published a FPS game, Americas Army, released back in 2002. I don't know how good the later editions were, but I think the initial release was really good for its time and I had a lot of fun with it.

In my country you have to renew your driver's license every 5 years. Includes eye exam, a quick verbal exam and if the examiner feels like, a practical exam. It's something you do in a couple hours and you don't really have to study for. They only ask actual practical questions and stuff you really should know.
The movie Zylus mentions about Gran Turismo video game players becoming real race car drivers is not just a movie. It's based off the story of a real life person and real events. The guy was involved with the making of the movie and still races now.
In the US getting a license is far too easy. The biggest issue is parents teaching kids incorrectly or nearly not at all. The knowledge test is generally a joke and the practical test is even worse. I drove around the block, went back into the lot and stopped within the cones from 20mph, and then parallel parked.

Passed my theory test the other day and Duncan is half right! You can guess and logic your way through most of the questions, but you do need to memorise the legal ones like how many months suspension you get for a certain offence.
My brother was an exchange student to the US which allowed him to get a US drivers liscence through the school he went to. But once he returned to Sweden he had to do tests to get his Swedish liscence because the rules in the US is a lot more relaxed. For example in the US you can drive against a red light if you are turning left in the US, but that isn't allowed here.
About the driver's license stuff, in Canada my elderly aunt had hers taken away by her doctor after she had an accident and fell, and she had to jump through a bunch of hoops and show that she was still competent and knew what she was doing before the doctor would give it back. Which was a pain in the ass for her, since she lives in the middle of nowhere, but gave me some hope that the system is working and at least trying to keep people off the road when they might pose a danger to others.

I've got to point out about how simulation driving can and does actively lead to successful racing careers in real life. A good example is a man named William Byron, driver of the number 24 Hendrick motorsports car in NASCAR's cup series. He started on iracing and simulators and now he has 7 career wins (3 of which have come this season) in the top level of American stock car racing.
So at the start of the runners map, what is keeping the car team from just ignoring the suicide cars, and using their half-map advantage to run to the end and grab some rocket launchers? O.o Or standing under the camping runners and blowing them?
That grand turismo thing isn't fake it's based on something that happened in reality with Racing driver Jann Mardenborough, as for making out like it's some bat shit insane idea, all the pro drivers race on sims and have Sim rigs they practice. And for a while grand turismo (whilst not the best Sim, was a damn good one) especially when you think they're using a full on wheel and pedel setup. There is a series Irl now. Where teams get points for racing and they also have a Sim round where points you get in the game contribute to your points you get IRL. And some of the drivers even use the wheel they play the game on in their real life cars.

driving sims definitely create transferrable skills. Many "real life" race drivers use sims like assetto corsa and rfactor to keep sharp, learn tracks and car behaviour etc. id not call Gran Turismo a sim as such.. but its not too far off.
Funniest thing about that shit race is noticing the "Current lap" timer and waiting for their reaction when whoever finishes a lap first goes "guys guys.. there's 2/3/4 laps" EDIT: there we go.. I like how wrong Zylus was about the Gran Turismo movie - it's centered around Jann Mardenborough, who was a kid that played a lot of Gran Turismo before joining their program to see if sim racers could be real racers. Not only did he win the series, but he went on to be a successful GT driver with race wins and a class podium at Le Mans. It literally proves the exact opposite of his point - his point was that racing in games doesn't translate to real life, yet the movie is about a real life guy who had to do just that.

If the interface of the simulator, is the same as the actual vehicle...that's exactly what they are for. Training you to use the real thing. Thing is many video games don't exactly emulate driving and what not the same way as it is in reality. You don't drive in 3rd person, you don't have wonky physics etc...
I'm just going to make a third comment, why not? In a few places those rental things are being added into public libraries which is neat. My local library just relocated after building a brand new building and I'm hoping they added this to their services. A lot of libraries are adding makers space kind of things as well which is really cool.

driving sims definitely create transferrable skills. Many "real life" race drivers use sims like assetto corsa and rfactor to keep sharp, learn tracks and car behaviour etc.

I like how wrong Zylus was about the Gran Turismo movie - it's centered around Jann Mardenborough, who was a kid that played a lot of Gran Turismo before joining their program to see if sim racers could be real racers. Not only did he win the series, but he went on to be a successful GT driver with race wins and a class podium at Le Mans.
It literally proves the exact opposite of his point - his point was that racing in games doesn't translate to real life, yet the movie is about a real life guy who had to do just that.

If the interface of the simulator, is the same as the actual vehicle...that's exactly what they are for. Training you to use the real thing. Thing is many video games don't exactly emulate driving and what not the same way as it is in reality. You don't drive in 3rd person, you don't have wonky physics etc...

In a few places those rental things are being added into public libraries which is neat. My local library just relocated after building a brand new building and I'm hoping they added this to their services. A lot of libraries are adding makers space kind of things as well which is really cool.
