    When I was building my first studio the MC303 was already out and the MC505 was just being released. The MC909 looks like a beast of a machine for the early 2000's. The other two were after the mid 90's and into the late 90's.

  • @wallbrown1876
    @wallbrown1876 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This thing is still the king of grooveboxes even 20 years later.
    The depth is endless if you go into the synth engine and it’s high price is well justified.

  • @vjspectron
    @vjspectron 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Its workflow is a little stiff and workstation-ish but in a lot of ways (like making a damn patch) this thing eats the MC-707 for breakfast.
    If you make any other videos, you should show off its realtime stuff like the Tempo/BPM slider and uh...D-Beams. I've never seen another machine that lets you play the input with the keys AND ACTUALLY DETUNES IT IN REALTIME so you can play live input chromatically like a monosynth patch!
    Try it: make sure you've got something coming through the input, then hold the "Mix In" button down and select "Velocity Pads" with the wheel. INSANITY!
    The synth engine in this thing is unreal in its sheer depth too, basically as deep or shallow as you want since you can just sample into it.
    Massively underrated machine, even in 2020. Nice video!

      I completely agree with you! I myself am the owner of this car and still has great potential, especially in addition to my MB8800, Yamaha Motif xc and Korg Kronos2,In this setup, 909 is not superfluous.

      Can you please tell me how to delete a User pattern? I mean, delete the data and name, so it's like a unused pattern that says "Empty".

    • @vjspectron
      @vjspectron 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MeneTekelUpharsin So to do this you need to start with the MENU button to the right of the screen. MENU > File Utility and hit ENTER, then F1/F2 to search in User/Card respectively. You need to select your pattern from the list (mine are in Card/Roland/SEQ/PTN), then SHIFT+F3 and confirm to delete it. This is how you initialize a pattern on MC-909.
      An easier way might be to find a blank pattern, then save it to another slot to edit.

    909 has a few mechanical issues with sliders but is an awesome bit of kit. 505 and 808 are my faves of that era.

    • @AnalogFlava
      @AnalogFlava 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      i thought the 808 was the worst of the bunch? still debating if to get a 505 or 909?? any advice as to pros/cons?

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AnalogFlava The MC-808 is more of a hybrid concept, not completely stand alone. You can tweak a basic set of parameters live but in depth sound design relies on editor software. The motorized faders look like fun though and it has 128 instead of 64 voices. The sound of the 808 and 909 derives from the XV series as found in the XV-5050 and 5080, the 505 has the JV series sound engine as in the JV-1080 and 2080. The MC-808 and 909 sound more hifi and clean but not quite as warm and gritty as the MC-505. I prefer the sound and workflow of the 505 but it is not a sampler. The 909 is clearly the better all in one solution but the 505 has more character mostly due to its unique filters.

      What mechanical issue?

    • @monsirto
      @monsirto 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MeneTekelUpharsin The sliders on the 909 are powered, which is very cool until they fail. Totally fixable but expensive. All of these turn of the century Roland grooveboxes have a few dodgy switches too. Fixable but it can be annoying. Still, I would favour any of Roland series over the Korg grooveboxes from this period (and I am a big Korg fan).

      An other way to repair without replacing pads is to put « liquid carbon » on pads, it’ll work as new ones too. The brush is included! I made miracles on old digital pianos and my old Nokia 3510i. It takes a bit of time and need you let it dry for 2 days but that’s my philosophy: why to replace when you can repair as new? The MC-909 is not overpriced at all imho, even at $ 1000,- or more. Yes, the pads wear out, so one should use a controller but even compared to the new flagship MC-707 it's a much sturdier build, made in Japan, integrated psu - no wall ward, larger graphic display (which is one of the best in hardware for editing samples), 16 tracks instead of 8, up to 99 measures per pattern instead of 8), can be maxed out to 272 MB of RAM instead of 64 MB, (more than twice as much as in the MPC-2500 btw), digital outs (coaxial and optical) more dedicated controls and the list goes on... The MC-707 does a better job emulating other synths and has other advantages over the 909 but it's just different, not better. For in depth info on the MC-909 check out the TH-cam channel "16 steps".

Because i live in Italy and we have 220v while in Japan is 110v...Thanks

      Roland spent the last decade remaking their company around analog circuit emulation tech. They must feel real stupid now that behringer is selling all of their machines and making millions in the process.
      And Rolands analog emulations don’t even sound that good. They should have just multi-sampled the original machines a 1000 times and done some advanced algorithmic round robin pitching stuff. Add some some good transistor soft limiting on the outs and an analog filter and we would all be shitting ourselves over how good they were.
