As a historian, this movie impressed me at every turn with the attention to detail and painstaking amount of research must have gone into every aspect. From all of the Chi-To tank prototypes being present, to the 500kg bomb strapped to the A6M5 late-war Zero in place of a drop tank normally expected to see the pilot home after a mission (a kamikaze hallmark), to the 13mm end-stage heavy machine gun instead of an obsolete 20mm cannon on the minesweeper, to the inclusion of a German-made ejection seat developed in that country for the rear-engined Dornier 335 and brought to Japan on a submarine with bits of an Me-262 fighter, to the distinctive paint scheme of the Takao, to all the ships besides that one having their main weapons removed, to using colorized aerial footage of the Bikini Atol tests... I did not notice a single historical misstep in the entire film from start to finish. That alone is one of the most seminal reviews I can personally give any movie.

This right here is exactly what I love about great films. Everyone shares their love of it through their experience and personal passions and professions; adding so much more to the conversation and to the world. I didn’t know about any of the military weapons, vehicles, fighters or ships. And now a whole new world has been opened up and a deeper appreciation for the movie. Many kind thanks Noah for sharing all of that information. Just brilliant!! Cheers!! 😊🌟😀

It's long, but I'd like to add a little bit about myself.
I'm 55 years old Japanese. My friend's (66-year-old) father, Mr. T. (who passed away a few years ago at the age of 90), told me about his war experiences. Near the end of the war, the Ginza area, the setting for "Godzilla Minus One," was bombed. Mr. T had come to Tokyo to take his university entrance exams, but just then, he was involved in an accident that caused the Yurakucho Station (which was located behind the Japanese theater that Godzilla destroyed with his tail in the movie) to collapse. Most of the people who had been around him just a moment ago died in an instant. One of the Japanese military officers nearby was still saluting, his upper and lower body torn in two, and a nearby mother holding a baby was blown away and both parent and child disappeared. Several students nearby survived under the rubble. But even decades after experiencing that hellish scene, my friend's father said, ``I never considered myself lucky to have survived that place.'' Told. I watched this movie thinking about how much hell he must have been through.
It's true that it's a movie, so there are a lot of convenient scenes.
However, when a disaster actually occurs, the obvious does not always come true. According to one person who survived unharmed at the epicenter of the bombing in Hiroshima because he was behind an unsturdy building, people on the street across the street were instantly reduced to charred corpses or disappeared. There was also a story.
There have been many tragedies in wars and disasters, but there have also been some miracles.
Interesting details about this movie. The hospital that appears at the end can be determined to be a Christian hospital because the nurses' clothes and the interior of the hospital room are unique. Godzilla uses his atomic breath to blow away the National Diet building along with the Tito tank, and from there the blast turns and blows away Ginza. People near the Nippon Theater were blown down Harumi Street towards Kachidoki Bridge and Tsukiji Market. What is interesting is that on the opposite side of Harumi Street from Tsukiji Market, a short distance from Kachidoki Bridge, is St. Luke's International Hospital, which was established in 1901. This hospital is known as the place where many people were taken during the Aum Shinrikyo subway sarin attack. It's a very realistic setting.
      Sorry for the long post.
I hope Google Translate reflects it correctly.

Good calls, all of them.... hey, weren't there a few comments in this thread a minute ago?
      Weird.
The 13mm MG made sense to me because it was using up an old gun & ammunition that otherwise had no future outside of a scrap-heap. Everything was spot-on, but I didn't know that the U.K. was just letting the Takao sit in Singapore all that time. Also interesting how they explained that the USAA was not getting involved because that would have given the Soviets a chance to come charging in and occupy Japan. They had wanted to do that in 1945, but MacArthur bluffed them, and Stalin never stopped looking for a way to get even.
Most brilliant of all; the plan they came up with to kill the monster in the end. Just amazing, and while a bit slap-dash and hard for dummies to follow, it puts the rest of the schemes in movies this year to shame.
But hey, so does everything else in this one! :D
Take heed; wHorrywood; everyone can see that you have been embezzling 90% of your budgets now. The age of the scam is OVER.

I went to this movie with my brother and father- he was a bit skeptical about this since it was in all japanese, saying that he'd have to watch it twice- one to read it, and another to actually see the movie. Afterwards, he was found a fool for that comment, and actually enjoyed the whole thing. And I think his comment on the movie as a whole should be shared:
'Godzilla Minus One is a love story, wrapped in with redemption and forgiveness, all covered up by genocide and topped with atomic radiation'.
I will always love a good movie, and the fact that this movie succeeded with a budget less than a tenth of most hollywood flops in the last few years, I still have some hope for the future of cinema. And I hope that this will be a critical lesson to Hollywood to get its act together.

This is such an emotionally satisfying film. The script payed such close attention to the grounded and sympathetic human characters. You quickly become so invested in their struggles against various tragic difficulties. Then when all these people you care about so much become endangered by the insanely hazardous and seemingly unstoppable Godzilla it creates an amazing level of dramatic tension. The visual FX were very high quality, the music was moving and beautiful, and the well-written story was brought to life by the talented cast. My spouse and I are bilingual, she is is a Japanese native speaker, and I have studied the language since I was a kid. We both agreed that the subtitles for this movie were crafted with an impressive level of skill and care. I think it gives an English speaking audience a much more authentic and less filtered experience than if they were watching this with a dubbed soundtrack. My wife wasn't the only one who cried when we watched this, I am not ashamed to say I couldn't keep a dry eye either. We have seen it twice in the theater and we were thoroughly entertained. If you have the chance, you deserve to see this on the big screen too.

TOTALLY AGREE !!! I studied Japanese since childhood as well. My little sister also did to a shorter extent but we both feel that to understand the emotional drama, the film MUST be seen in Japanese. I agree that the English subtitles were first class and extremely well done. I too cried through most of the movie. The soundtrack using various classical Godzilla music themes just did it for me. Absolutely beautiful!! Best wishes from Northern California

It's DEI, forcing Disney to hire diverse but incompetent people. Incompetent people cost a company through their mistakes. Hire activists and you get malignant people working in your companies, more concerned with pushing THE MESSAGE then shareholder profit. It's having to work in California, with Commiefornia rules and unions driving up costs. It's beer coof regulations which add further costs. It's having no fiscal discipline and a CFO, Christine McCarthy, who signed off on all of it instead of asking questions what that money was being spent on. As Katee Sackhof said, the catering budget of Mandalorian was bigger then the entire budget of Battlestar Galactica. It's not writing your scripts out in advance, storyboarding your movies and shows out in advance, making it up as you go along, shooting multiple different versions of the same scenes so you can scrapbook something together in post. It's doing multiple reshoots, which involves rehiring a cast, crew and set, and which forces VFX artists to redo their work all over again, at crunchtime. In essence Hollywood has a pisspoor planning, writing and financial discipline problem, exacerbated by having to work in and from Commiefornia.

Loved seeing a movie where the characters didn't have to be stupid to advance the plot. Even 'The Kid', the young comic relief character, figures out a solution and charges to the rescue when the plan stalls 'The useless to the rescue' indeed. Likewise the human relationships are extremely satisfying, but unlike so many other Godzilla movies where bland government-backed drones go through the motions, the ordinary people take the risks and prepare to pay the price.

To SOS and Final Wars against adversaries and more alien threats to the evolution of Shin and the branching over to Legendary has further cemented this icon. Now its evolution into the human condition in dealing with the horror that is Godzilla makes the bold leap in grand fashion. Weve been in packed theaters with blockbuster movies. Lost war, lost lives, shame, care for those who lost everything, courage, sacrifice, new value of lives, limited resources, unity, solidarity and hope. It's unbelivable, that in current times of flat characters they could create well-rounded multidimensional heroes. And we care about them, cause they seems like a real humans, with emotions, struggles, fears and developement we could identify with. No matter of skin color or gender - this is how to write timeless characters for most of mankind.

Had to see this one. What made this movie even better was that is was kinda sorta Kamikaze on trial as a philosophy. In my opinion, it was steeped in Japanese culture while also a critique on it and it almost may have crossed the line. We get to see a warrior man fail time and again, only to not only win his personal war, but live through it, which goes against what his mission was. It was VERY deep and profound and it is these messages and philosophies that once made things like Star Wars. Like George said, the monsters or powers were only that backdrop for what the character had to do, which was keep going. I agree with some critics of the conclusion of this movie, but either way, it was very sweet. It was also an exploration of Japanese relationships between males, females, kids, adoption. I also liked how it was very practical about the message of war in that everyone dies. He had photos of so many of his people and they haunted him like ghosts. It was an actual movie where the monsters of his failings were bigger than the monster of the movie itself.

What I love and appreciate about Minus One is it takes interesting elements from both some of the best and even overlooked films in the Godzilla franchise and redoes them in ways that makes it all feel fresh and new. It really deserves a follow-up and I hope it gets that chance after years of Toho rebooting everything like they’ve done either every entry since the 2000s.

The best movie of the year WITHOUT question! It really is a modern masterpiece. Toho hit all the right notes with Shin Godzilla, and then crafted their Magnum Opus with Minus One. Godzilla is on the March, and Hollywood as we know it is doomed….
    Long Live the King!!

i cannot tell you how happy i am that the movie is doing so well over here in the states, and I am glad so many people are getting the emotional impact by it. i loved your review of it, you really nailed it! i heard alot of people complaining of the movie being melodramatic, but that is how japanese movies, dramas, tv shows etc.. are. i lived in Japan over 15 years of my life and only moved back home to marry my husband. i had such a unique experience there. God blessed me to become fluent in the language rather quickly and every place i lived was way out in the boondocks with absolutely no other foreigner with in a 100 miles, i was so immersed in the lifestyle and culture i am like half japanese at heart
i guess i say all that cause when you understand the culture and language it makes the film that much more beautiful and meaningful and sad at the same time. I guess an example is truly understanding the depths of the shame at that time for chickening out of a kamikaze flight and that it was such a horrible thing that would cause him to be kicked out from society , well i guess i am rambling now😅 anyway I love your videos, they are my favorite and thanks for listening

Usapyon you made my week!! 😊 Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the movie through your eyes as someone who lived and loves Japan. Going to Japan has been my life long dream to stay and write and love there for a while. Have been studying the country and the amazing history, people and culture. Also, now getting closer so I have started learning Japanese. The power of the scene when he returns to the rubble of his home and his neighbor, in the beginning, treated him how you were describing about him not completing his mission as a kamikaze pilot. It was so beautiful when she started to come around. But the scene at the top of my list was, without giving it away for others, but you’ll understand, when he is flying that pass towards the end. The combination of the music, the action in the background on the ships, his expressions and the emotions just lifted me out of my seat to cheer! Thank you again. My best wishes to you and yours for a most brilliant and blessed weekend!! 😀🌟🤗

As a LONG time fan of the Godzilla movies (I grew up watching them) the sequence of his atomic breath was SO freaking good. Both because it brought back the feel of the old school practical effects of the original as each biomechanical dorsal spike ratcheted out like some spring tension system before all releasing in a single satisfying click. Also because the sequence along with the actual breath attack and explosion somehow FELT like Anime where intense moments of an attack are juxtaposed with almost serene brief moments of calm before the chaos lands.
Throw in ALL the awesome references to the original Godzilla with some beat for beat recreated scenes like him wrecking the trains, and this is a movie that just knows what it is and knows how to be the best at that. If this isn't taught in film school from here on something is wrong with our priorities in film making and making file makers

Great review! I appreciate the mention of Jaws and Oppenheimer in the way you mentioned them. I feel the same. When Jaws came out, I was a kid and it scared me to the core. I believe this one would have done the same had I seen it back when I was that age. A major difference, however, is this movie's human story, which Jaws also had, but it's on a different level. This film is much more important than Oppenheimer. G -1 is first and foremost about nuclear war; and the reverberating physical and psychological effects it has on its victims. I did find myself tearing up unexpectedly and surprisingly, and I think it was due to a combination of knowing the historical context, the symbolism of Godzilla, seeing a scene or two that reminded me of footage of the 2011 tsunami rampage in Fukushima, but also the timeliness considering what's happening in the world today. It is truly a masterpiece.

this movie is a masterpiece. It will inspire a rollercoaster of emotions and like any good rollercoaster you will be thrilled at the end that you got onto ride. All the character's are likeable and you will care about what happens to them. Too many films have characters you would rather see fail than win. They are no obnoxious and unlikeable and people you would never want to hang out with or work with. There is no pandering here. There is no black lesbian American to please the US market. This is a movie about Japanese people in Japan after WW2. It does fly bye and you will hooked for every minute.
