  • Inspired by Ludwig van B (musically and sartorially too, by the looks of it), Gary performs his Techical Program at the 1989 World Professional Figure Skating Championships

WWWWHAT!!! NO QUAD!...OH! THIS IS FIGURE SKATING. Effortless jumps. Incredible, unique style. (Young skaters: TAKE NOTE! This is how you pull off an edge, And a figure!!!)

this guy was an unappreciated genius on ice, impossible moves and positions which he made look so easy. His spins were otherworldly so perfectly in balance that the speed was blinding.

Beethoven would've loved it! I sure did. Thanks for posting - never saw this one!

An original one of a kind style! You don't see that much now days. Today's skaters totally lack individuality in style and everyone practically looks the same.

That's because it's all about the jumps. The famous quad. I'd rather watch one with that one of a kind style.

Edmund Geswein The day school figures where banned from competition by the ISU was the day the sport changed forever. I didn’t always like skating figures but I knew my skating wouldn’t have been as good without them. I think skating as a whole suffered tremendously by the loss of those 8 figure tests and the mastery of edges that came with them.

He's still skating, I think! I saw a video of him competing at an adult championship in 2016.

I'm trying to watch all these videos of Gary's skating . How skilled and creative he was !
Does anyone know what Gary is doing now ? Is he still skating ?
Assuming he was near 30 in this video, maybe he is in his 60's now.

Yes, he's still skating, and even competing at adult competitions. He's not doing triple jumps any more -- I think he stopped those around the time he turned 60 -- but his component scores are huge and he's still got the double axel. If you do a search on youtube you can find the routines he's done at Oberstdorf, including 2023's competition.
