I’m just impressed by all this, if you went back in time and told a teenage me “there will be multiple marvel movies a year, PLUS shows. And you’re gonna not only hate it. But stop reading comics all together” I wouldn’t believe you.
They literally turned a life long marvel fan into an active hater.

I personally thought Marvel was going to tank in 97-98 when they had to be bought out. But they survived and the MCU was incredibly fresh and I rejoiced. I can only hope what we currently see is the 97-98 Marvel and it can rise from its own ashes.

don't let the real haters win man, those losers were and still are jealous of what a community of like-minded people like us were up to
so they connived to hijack this space and decided to be petty and they still manage to fail
i live marvel because i like to...marvel at wondrous concepts and things and future space civilizations, alternate history and what not and to marvel and wonder at all the fantastical things that might or might not come to fruition one day

Aside from the attempts at social engineering, the other big problem is that the mindset in Hollywood is 'content creation' rather than 'good storytelling'.

    • @rapz85
      @rapz85 ปีที่แล้ว +14

I was just talking about that with some people at work. They're so focused on pumping out content to fill up space in their lineup, that they aren't focusing any real attention on any particular IP. Since the beginning of Marvel Phase 4 in Jan 2021, we've seen 9 Marvel Films (10 if you include The Marvels), 11 Marvel Series Seasons (including What if? and Loki S2), and 5 Star Wars series season releases. This doesn't take into account the 32 non-Marvel films released under the Disney banner, a bunch of unrelated series like Willow, and National Treasure, among others as well as different unscripted shows, various animated series, as well as specials and shorts. Unfortunately judging by their list of upcoming shows and movies, this is going to get worse before it gets better.

The fact that if you were a businessman or boss of a company (or, in this case, franchise) did near to half as bad as things have progressed with (woke hollywood) that person would be fired, blacklisted and flagged for what I have done so that others don't make the mistake in hiring that person for there foreseeable future in that career all withinn 24-48hrs.
And the sheer fact that they (woke hollywood people) have made it this far for near on 10years doing the same thing again and again should go down in history books as one of the greatest escapes of responsibility. Right next to the page of the great Houdini escape artist.

The last few minutes of your video almost had me in tears. I live on my own and rarely see or speak to anyone so the characters in the movies and comicbooks I like feel like friends to me. I find great comfort and peace spending time with them. In the same way, I love watching your videos as again, it feels like I'm spending time with a friend. It was great to hear you say what I have been feeling for so long. These stories and characters matter to us. They get us through tough times which is why it's so hard to watch them be destroyed in real time. When you don't have much, you cherish the few things you do have. I'm not racist or sexist or any kind of phobe. I just want the things I love and have invested in to be respected.

"Escapism is important, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise."
You hit the nail on the head. In today's day where everything is depressing, scary, and uncertain, escapism helps people get through one more day. But how can we escape for just an hour from our reality when the writers shoehorned poorly hidden allegories (if not blatantly spelling it out) about the real world in our escapism? I'm tired of being preached at, and I'm tired from all the real world horrors. I need that hour or two to recharge and recenter.

Earlier this year, my dad suffered a heart attack that landed him in the hospital. Thankfully, we were able to get him in quickly and he was operated on in enough time that the damage was minimal. He is doing very well now. That being said - the entire time I sat in his hospital room or the waiting room, I read a fantasy novel. It didn’t take away the situation, nor did it make my dad well again. But it gave me something else to think about in the middle of a stressful circumstance, and I was better able to help my dad and my mom.
That’s what all of these stories and characters mean to people. It’s not about skin color or chromosomes or where you like to stick your private parts. These stories entertain people. They relieve stress. They help us think and learn in a way that a lecture can never do. To reduce creative works down to a cheap way to score political points is insulting to the work and the audience.

Nobody is under any obligation to put out a movie/book/show that is tailored to my tastes...but I am not obligated to spend my money on things that I do not like. It's how the system works. Sadly, Marvel had gotten so big that it was always going to take that juggernauht a while to fail after Disney started working to destroy it. I just find it amusing that they are so desperately trying to attract an audience that has never been into comic books while ignoring all of us who always have been into them. I grew up reading my dad's old Marvel (and a handful of DC) comics. They _had_ "strong female characters" in Storm, Jean Gray, and more. I admired their strength of _character,_ how they faced adversity of all types and strove to overcome it. Sometimes they'd break down when things were hard, but they always got back up and tried again, eventually becoming victorious. Sometimes men saved them, sometimes they saved men, but (for those on a team) they worked _together._ It wasn't a competition, it was cooperation.
But that's not enough for intersectional feminists. _Nothing's_ ever enough for intersectional feminists. They wouldn't even be satisfied if every man on the planet died and they found a way to reproduced without men; they'd _still_ find something to complain about b/c they're malcontents. They can't make their own characters b/c they're flat and one-dimensional, just author self-inserts...so they take already established _male_ characters and make them gay, trans, female, or some overly-complicated mix of the above. They prey on nostalgia-bait-and-switch, and wonder why sales are falling.
    Time to go indie.

Comics were my life as a kid. I read most Marvel titles, even the oddball ones like Deathlok, Werewolf by Night, and War of the Worlds (Killraven). I watched the bad made-for- TV movies of Spider-man and Captain America. I suffered through the Fantastic Four Cartoons where they replaced The Human Torch with Herbie the Robot (Star Wars was huge so...droid). In the 90s (my 30s) I collected with friends at work. I sold and re-bought collections. The Daredevil "Electra" storyline was unbelievable. She-Hulk was amazing. She served as a substitute for the Thing for a while in the Fantastic 4 and was an Avenger. Pre MCU Movies were very enjoyable. Sam Raimi Spiderman Movies set the bar but I like Blade, Daredevil, and even Electra. The X-Men movies were fine with Logan being gold. The MCU was a treat because I could introduce my kids to my heroes, but then it all went south (Thor Love and Thunder broke me) and it makes me sad. I'll hang onto the few DVDs I still have to hopefully share with future grandkids. By destroying Marvel, like Star Wars, I feel betrayed by Disney and the woke agenda (I'm a left leaning moderate). I'm sad for the kids that won't get to adventure with their heroes like I did. Good Job, Disney.

Gary, I normally just watch videos such as these without having anything more than a thumbs-up to give in return, but your spiel near the end about the power of entertainment really hit me in just the right spot that I felt compelled to express my appreciation. Throughout my life, I have found that kind of thing through many different forms, e.g. music, movies/TV, games and sometimes books, and you were 100% correct in how it provided me much-needed laughter, escape, catharsis, motivation, even hope over the years. It really saddens me that this industry has managed in 5 or 6 years to bring itself to the brink of oblivion just because it decided it hated some of the people who enjoyed what it made. I look around the cultural landscape and I find myself saddened to see nothing that resembles what we had as kids. I was 5 when Star Wars was first released, and so for years nothing else commanded my attention anywhere near as greatly. Hell, just this evening, I was having a conversation with a co-worker about how these movies were goddamned EVENTS, and not just a big pile of homogenized content that can’t instill that same kind of enthusiasm. Now I’m reminded of being in college and how geeked out I was over the TNG episodes featuring the return of Spock, and how awesome it was to see him and Data converse in that one scene.
Anyway, I’m rambling here with what’s obviously free-form writing so I won’t take up much more space, as I think you should get what I’m trying to say. I’ll leave with this: as much as the younger generations fail to instill in me much confidence that this thing we love can find its way again, I do reserve a smidgeon of optimism that in every generation there’s just enough youngsters who, regardless of background, possess just enough of that F*CK YOU I WON’T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME spirit to know how things actually work enough to enable them to follow their dreams. Thanks for inspiring this babble.

totally agree with the closing comments.. from someone who isn't / wasn't used to failure - covid19 destroyed my business (aviation mainly focused in NZ/AU) and life, I just shutdown and gave up, escapism is useful. Lots of earlier films used to give life lessons, especially the idea of redemption.. or pulling yourself up - myself, even as an adult used to look up to male role models even if in world of fantasy - there are none or few now. I started to go down a dark path, which I won't go into as frankly too ashamed at myself.. but was a sort of escapism (ok starting to hang around with some biker clubs.. actually most of them were ok, some were psychos, but at least I felt something)... This might sound insane, but it isn't just about 'content' / 'product' it's about society.. art makes society, and vice-a-verse.. I fear for the future... I kind of turned my life around, but only just.

If I can say a personal story: After JDF/Jason David Frank’s Death, I felt like nothing could make me happy. However, Where Wakanda Forever failed, Oshi no Ko (An Anime) brought up higher than Avengers Endgame had! Sure the First episode was depressing but….It gave me a story that I can stay invested in, until I picked up the Manga right after that. The marvels isn’t even out yet. Captain marvel wasn’t a bad film. Brie Larson isn’t a bad actress. Ms marvel was one of the better Disney + shows. Monica was an interesting character in Wandavision. The marvels could be a great film but some people won’t know that because they can’t get past the idea that anything other than a straight white male lead means marvel and Hollywood are focused on being “too woke.” Obviously there are exceptions such as Black Panther and Wanda but for the most part this is true. She-Hulk was a shit project but that had nothing to do with being “woke.” People wouldn’t talk shit on captain marvel if the lead was a straight white male playing the same kind of character. Marvel comics has been inclusive since the 60s and modern mcu fans should allow room for many different types of characters. If the marvels is a bad film once it’s out is one thing but writing it off before anyone knows anything about it is focused too much on being “anti-woke” and would go as far to say that some people are straight up sexist/misogynistic.
