  • A T-Line or Transmission Line subwoofer enclosure is a box style that allows us to get low end extension out of our subwoofer along with a flat response. Different than a ported or sealed subwoofer enclosure this type of box design appears to be all port. How do we build a T Line box? Let’s make this subwoofer box step by step in this DIY video!

      @omar - Not a T-Line. They get huge quickly. Take a look at someting like a sealed or ported enclosure. To determine if you have enough room for ported check out this video: th-cam.com/video/oKdAHZS1LP4/w-d-xo.html

      I like parallel 6th orders because you have full control over your pile of dog food. Ported boxes only let you move the left side of your dog food pile.

      A routing table is a great tool for someone who is always fabricating things but how often are you out in the shop/garage fabricating?
      My last project was a big elaborate 300g saltwater fishtank stand and canopy made out of Poplar with crown molding at the ceiling etc etc.. It came out beautiful but that was years ago.
      Actively walking around the house looking for things to rout...lol. all good though, no upgrades needed.

    Great project... I've built hundreds of custom car subs... loved it for many.many years... I used routers extensively, as well as routers to flare large PVC port tubes-from the inside at the speaker baffle board and both inside and outside the PVC port on the inside thereby eliminating the air from breakingoff/separating from the port just like in an airfoil.
    This allowed the bass to smoothly and with much less noise extend the bottom end in a way that was awesome. Loved shaping what iz would pull vinyl or grill cloth over like sculpturing.
    Boat seats are sculptured in a very similar manner and are dubbed 'sculptured foam'

  • @gittarpikk

    BTW... I always found using the poly based professional liquid nails from a caulk gun and 1.75 inch narrow crown staples (still have that gun to this day) was the best way to fasten any MDF or particle board product. It work quickly and solidly and you never, ever have a joint to leak, break or even give in any way. the material will break somewhere other than the joint even if ran over by something like a dump truck. I always used a DuoFast gun.

    Could you clarify or comment on one aspect of T-line enclosures? As with any enclosure which uses a port, isn't the enclosure "tuned" to one specific frequency? This creates a bump in the frequency response curve around the port's designed frequency. So how do you keep it from sounding boomy at the tuned frequency? Is the roll-off from the tuned frequency in this enclosure smooth or sharp?

I am like that to, with doing mods to cars. I was hoping we could have a chat on facebook or something. I saw this video were this guy had like 2 6inch subs in this big ass box and he was doing close to 150db with it. sins then, I have been thinking, about doing a single 8 inch doing 140 plus db. Do you have plans for one of your killer boxes for a 8 inch able to do 140 or better db.

      Trapperjohn1000
      There are plenty of great shops out there, you just have to do the research and find one in your local area. Yes it can be a pain in the butt to spend hours calling to different shops and visiting them to see what they can offer, and their level of work. I figured if you are going to spend a thousand or so dollars on a Subwoffer enclosure, you might as well make sure it is done by someone who knows what they are doing. A shop that can produce top tier work is going to cost some serious money, you figure about $100 to $150 and hour plus materials. I don't know what your budget it like or what your end goal is, but I can promise you one thing, if you are trying to find the cheapest installer, then the work you get from it is going to reflect the money you invest in the shop. SO the adage still stands, you get what you pay for. :)

    Can T lines be use for any single sub? And whats the best thing about T lines?

    • @JJ_ExMachina
      @JJ_ExMachina 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A "T" line is easiest to design build and install in to the vehicle with only one subwoofer. The overall size of a "T" line is pretty massive vs other box designs. The best thing about a "T" line box is the ability to flatten out the bass curve and allow a subwoofer to play more accurately with fewer spikes in the frequency range.
      As comparison a "bandpass" designed enclosure will be "tuned" to create a spike at a certain frequency. This allows the precised volume of the box to "louder" and have more punch.
      A "T" line works best in a open are space like a SUV, Station Wagon, etc, due to its ability to reproduce a very accurate level of bass... The bandpass box for comparison works best in a sealed trunk. Since the back seat of a vehicle tends to block a lot of frequencies, the bandpass box has the ability to punch hard at a given range at the sacrifice of overall sound quality and accuracy.
      SO T line is best for open air vehicles, not saying you can not use them in any other application, it just would be a waste of time effort and space to use this style of box in an enclosed space. Since the benefits of a "T" Line are robbed by the materials the sound is trying to push through.
      Hope this information was helpful :)

    • @JJ_ExMachina
      @JJ_ExMachina 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Womby Farthing
      It is all about port tuning. You can tune the port to a given frequency response ranget. Allowing you to flatten out any spikes in the low end. It takes trial and error and experience to get one right. When you do the results are nothing short of spectacular. It is not like setting up a system in a large room, the interior of a vehicle plays havoc on the sound quality of your system, so box "tuning" can play an important role in sound quality for automotive applications. In a perfect world you could stick all your speakers in the proper sealed enclosure and be done with things.

      You are correct, not all subwoofers work well in T line boxes. I have had some amazing results with Sundown Audios SA-8" and X-6.5 SW V.2, the excursion and overall design plays well with a T line and allows for a wide range of tuning. For real world example, my 2001 Golf GTI has an issue of a 54-55 Hz resonance. This causes a peek at the drivers location that gets "boomy" and it is so bad that it will drown out everything else when that tone is achieved. I have found that any sealed, ported, or bandpass box I have installed as not gotten rid of that over amplified 54-55 Hz hit. Just the cars design causes that spike in sound pressure levels at the 54-55 Hz. I have found that a single Sundown Audio SA-8 in a "T" line box tuned to 30 Hz facing backwards removes that spike in the sound from the drivers position in the vehicle. This has vastly improved the overall sound quality of the system overall. I no longer have to deal with ear bleeding spikes in the sub sounds. The added benefit I have found with the T line box is the lack of port "chuff", even at very high Hz levels the port "chuff" is near silent. The smaller overall size of the 8" subwoofer allows the speaker to reach higher in to the mid bass range then larger subwoofers. I have more head room to adjust my crossover points, allowing me to tune out some of the sub bass from the midbass speakers. Preventing any sort of low end distortions, and reducing the over all strain on the amplifier driving the midbass, mids, vocal and high speakers. Giving me a much fuller range of sound with far fewer peeks and dips in the audio range. Under white/pink noise testing I have been able to achieve near flat levels of sound sitting in the drivers seat. All while doing so with less then 2000 watt class. I have won a few competitions for sound quality in the 2k class, so I am pretty happy with the overall results.

      COMPASBASSCLUB CHICALI try to use a sub with a QTS of .4 or lower. That's what helps give t lines the flatter response and shallow rolloff and tune it to the FS of sub. So try to find a sub that has an FS of the tuning you want

    Doesn't the transmission line have to continually flare wider as it approaches the port opening? That what I learned anyway from the Loudspeaker Design Cookbook...

    Hi, I bought a edifier s350db speaker system. I intend to remove the 8 inchs driver from the ported box and build a transmission line enclosure for it instead. But I'm worry that this driver might not be suited for transmission line if he don't have the correct fs, qts, qtc, vas, re, so on. Do you know of an ideal 8 inchs driver for transmission line available for purchase online that I can buy. I want to listen to my entire collection of rock from the seventees with low distortion tight bass coming from a single dedicated t-line subwoofer. As for the digital amplification of the edifier it is very well build. Keep on rocking till you drop as def leppard said in their pyromania album.

    Hi. Quick question(s).
    Is a subwoofer horn, basically, a T-Line with a larger neck and even larger mouth?
    If not, then, what's the difference?

    Would like to see you build a multi speaker - speaker box holding 4 12s. I've got one but would like to better my sound output and nobody has anything on 4 12s. I've search the Internet and it doesn't give you any guide lines on how to set this up except by speaker info, please help!
