I'm Taking DNA From My Waterways To See What Bird & Aquatic Life Is Actually In Them!

- Yohan has come out from DairyNZ today to show me how to take some EDNA samples from a couple of water ways on farm to see what life is living in and around them. It's an interesting tool to see progress over time in all the riparian planting that I am doing which is hopefully going to increase over time.
You really are becoming quite the Ecologist now.
Well done and hope the rain eases up for your cows.😊
I guess its something that really interests me now
Can you send your info to Forrest and bird had a young upstart come to my house looking for money to stop pollution in rivers .man I was pissed off when he asked where my proof was said to him I know lots of farmers who test there water.
Good job keep it up.
Why don’t you move the cows in the evening?
That way you could see how the paddock looks in the morning and move them sooner if they’re damaging the paddock.
Weather bombs don't send a bulletin to the Weather Office, they just happen as Andy said, not forecasted.
Pretty fair comment! But like doing it in the morning so if there’s a problem with somthing it’s fixable during the day 👍
@@TheOnceADayFarmer Yeah, I’d prefer moving them in the morning too.. but nothing is worse than paddocks that you’ve got to skip because they’ve been badly pugged.
Brilliant video Andrew. Proof that the vast majority of Farmers actually do care about the environment, I love how you are constantly trying to improve your farm and the flora and fauna.
Keep it up Andrew and hopefully these people against farming will eventually take notice.
Thanks! Trying to shed a bit of good light. Those kind of people wouldn't watch this I imagine haha
Good to see Andrew how young progressive farmers are moving the dial. Hope there isn’t too many carp. Growing up in Northland in the 50’s /60’s we never had any carp. When were they introduced into NZ. Up here on the Atherton Tablelands the rain has finally buggered off and sugar cane, maize and peanut harvest are in full swing.Interesting to see Fronterra has put the Australian operations on to the market
They are a massive pest, and the annoying thing is nothing is done to try and reduce numbers! i dont think carp go up the drains as far as where I put the samples so will be interesting to see if any turn up
@@TheOnceADayFarmer Same here in Australia. Former National Party Minister put on an embarassing performance about carp in our Federal Parliament. They were going to release a herpes type of virus to take them out BUT scientists couldn't guarantee that it wouldn't affect native fish as well so it never went ahead. Here in North Queensland we also have the Tilapia which is a pest as well. Bloody crocodiles not eating enough of them 😂
Good on u bro have a good life
Hey Andrew you might need a quad bike with all that mud
We have one but prefer the two wheelers or gator 👍 don’t really use it much to be fair
@@TheOnceADayFarmer okay can you maybe bring the quad on video one day
Need halter collars awesome for letting them onto fresh break from home
haha yeah I bet! would be awesome
👀🙄🐾👍Interesting Andy
you can always use a small section of farm race to hold cows in the wet to not bring them onto concrete
You can but it usually gets really mucky and muddy so would prefer on the cowshed instead. Have done it in the past at a push and didn’t work that great from my experience anyway
Very interesting vid sir... almost though you were over here at the start of it though 😮😊.. your farm is looking great .. 👍🏻 stay safe 🏴
Nice to see your videos 👌
Andrew. Have you ever thought of outdoor cubicles off your feeding bay where you load your cows for the works ??
No never really come to mind to be honest. You dont see that over here, composting barns are becoming very popular though
Super interesting, would be good to get some little bait traps from k mart or something and see what you can catch in your waterways then compare them to the results from the DNA
The next step, is electro fishing, so they walk down the water way with like a electric probe I think zapping the water and it stuns the fish which float to the top then they can check them out and release them again.
@@TheOnceADayFarmer that’s awesome man looking forward to watching it
That’s so interesting
Would you consider getting a spring tine harrow and an air seeder like Adrian on ifarmwefarm you could reseed them paddocks in springtime
I would love to try one, you don’t see them down here very much, they’re rare as
Andrew, great work. Love your rain, v dry here southern Australia.
Do you use any Gibberlic Acid on pasture? I haven’t seen any videos on it
that's a bummer! hope you get some rain soon.
I don't use any maybe something to look into possibly
Canadian Geese, what we call flying rats, seem to have made it all the way to NZ. My oh my.
yes a massive pest over here unfortunately, 3 geese eat as much grass as 1 sheep!
Swans are bad news too . 30 on a neighbors field near the river a few weeks ago.
When do your cows calf
around the 16th of July so just under a month away now
That is very interesting. Do you pay that fee, or is it subsidized by someone?
I didn’t pay for this one and there is definitely finding out there to get them for free if you know where to look 👍
Hi Andrew nice video mate
Did you go to fieldays
Cows are looking good mate
Thanks jack
Nah not this year unfortunately
@@TheOnceADayFarmer oh no good mate
Just a question do you need a worker for your farm because when I leave school I'm going to be looking for a dairy farm job but i wont leaving till the end of next year
Do all new Zealand dairy farmers out winter their livestock?
The majority do yes
Yes, except for those with large corporate farms and deep pockets for the sheds and equipment.
Pinching our eels, next it will be possums.
haha you can have the possums....you can even have ours!
I’m surprised your still milking cow’s since your making a fortune in the horse racing business
Haha love it 😂👌
