What a great channel Cy! As a Historian from Argentina who loves Persia and the Ancient times, this by far the best channel. Could you do a video on the scripts used to record in the Persian Empire? Thank you. Keep it up.
Always a pleasure watching History with Cy’s video! Another great episode! On one side, you don’t kill a messenger because of the message. On another, it was indeed extremely risky for the messenger to go to Sparta of all places and deliver THAT message. 😅 Darius didn’t really like him!
In the part about Athens and Sparta killing the envoys you make it clear that this was against Greek norms, but I wish you had explained why both Athens and Sparta chose to do it in that case.
As far as I can remember Herodotus doesn't specifically say what their specific reason was but I think he added those scenes to imply that such a command to submit to a foreign ruler was so detestable to the Athenians and Spartans that they killed the messengers. Later on we'll see that the Spartans regretted their decision to throw the heralds down into the well because they actually did fear divine retribution, and so they sent a envoys to Darius' successor Xerxes to make amends and cancel their cosmic debt by offering their own lives as punishment. We'll get to that later on in the series. Thanks for watching!
It was and still is part of Greece and the ancient Greek world. Just my opinion, I think part of the reason that they have this perception of being outsiders is that at the time many Greeks looked down on Macedonians for being a bit rough, unrefined and unsophisticated, which is incorrect. This though seems to have been the prevalent Athenian view, which is understandable given that Athens was going through a golden age and was arguably the most powerful, cultured and wealthy polis in the Greek world after the Persian Wars. They could also claim to have stood up to the Persians. When most of the ancient Greek world was in the process of having more democratic governments or oligarchies, the Macedonians had a monarchy. The Macedonians had also "medized" longer than any other group on mainland Greece, and so I think that also went against them. But they are and were part of the Greek world, just like Thessaly, Boeotia and other areas. Attica and the Peloponnese get a lot of the attention because they are probably better documented and were the main power centers of the Greek world for much of antiquity (until perhaps the rise of Syracuse). I visited the Macedonian capitals of Aigae and Pella a few months ago and from what I saw in museums, various inscriptions and archaeological sites, they were definitely Greek. Just my thoughts, hope this helps and thanks for watching.
Thanks, hope you had a great Christmas and all the best for 2025! Haha as for the staff, it's just me... I'm the only one making these videos. Thanks for watching, really appreciate it!

Many people don’t realise SPAM is named after Cy but there was a printing error. But SPAM for dinner is when I say “May I have my vengeance upon the Athenians” what I always supper or have dinner it’s “remember the Athenians?” And the inflection is all weird I can’t tell if it’s a statement or question
Yes. According to Herodotus, "The Spartans had dispatched Leonidas and his men so that the rest of their allies would see them and take up arms rather than medize, which indeed they might have done if they heard that the Spartans were hanging back. The rest of the Spartans were detained by the feast of Carnea but, as soon as they had celebrated it, they intended to mobilize their full strength and, leaving a small garrison in Sparta, to march to join them with all speed. The rest of the allies had similar intentions. In their case, it was the Olympic Festival that fell at the same time as these events and they were not expecting matters to come to a head so quickly at Thermopylae, so they too sent advance contingents only." The Spartans though were accompanied by I Thessalians and some Thebans. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
It's weird to think about that we probably know more about the people that lived 2500 years before us, than the people who come 2500 years after us will know about our lives. Texts carved into rock stand the test of time a lot better than paper, ink and electronic data carriers. Maybe some of our buildings will survive that long, but practically every written source will crumble in time. For example future people might find remnants of our stadiums but have no idea what sports they were used for.
Other than the example of the killing of the heralds sent to Sparta and Athens, I don't know of any other instances where heralds sent by non-Greeks/barbarians were killed, including interactions with Illyrians, Thracians, Carthaginians and others. We'll see in later episodes that according to Herodotus, the Spartans regretted killing the Persian heralds sent to them because they feared retribution from the gods and even sent men to Susa and Xerxes to be sacrificed in order to nullify their divine debt. This somewhat implies that the custom/protection was applied to non-Greeks as well. Just my thoughts.

Imagine the Persian king of kings praying to the greek god Zeus while not knowing who the Athenians are. Credible indeed :)
Good video this!
It's understandable that Herodotus wouldn't know the Zoroastrian gods though
Yeah neither would his mostly Athenian audience. I guess Zeus can be substituted for Ahuramazda (Ahura Mazda) or God in general. Thanks for watching!

Didnt the spartans only sent 300 soldiers to Thermopilae also because of celebrating the Carnea?
Yes.
