- New Haven, Connecticut is the pizza capital of the world. In this video, I try Frank Pepe's, Sally's, Modern, and BAR back-to-back to determine which is the best.
I had a lot of fun making this video and I'm really happy with how it came together. If you enjoyed, please leave a comment, like the video, and subscribe for more content!
So they were cold? I think you should have ordered and ate them each individually. You can’t rate cold pizza.
Exactly
Yes you can look I don't like hot pizza
Opinions are like....
That is the first thing I thought when I saw that he had all 4 at the same time. Going to have to agree with you.
You can if they are all equally cold
All the pizza’s looked cooled down. You should have graded them as you picked them up. Rookie review.
Lived in CT for 40 years and I've always thought Modern was #1 in taste, Sally's #2 and Pepe's #3 but they're all good and any one of them is a treat. Modern's taste is incredible. Their flavor is just perfect. Over all the years I'd say Pepe's tends to be the most burnt, Modern the most floppy and occasionally oily but it's still King.
Modern surprised me so much! Didn’t think anything could beat Pepe’s!
I went to Modern, and it was greasy and had zero crisp- what a disappointment, should have gone to Sally’s
@@rugger104Every video I’ve seen of modern the pizzas been pretty floppy and looked really greasy still look great but I’ve never seen one look like this.
Modern has always been my favorite! Plus you don’t have to wait in a long line. Love it!
Pepe's in the 80's was a lot better than it is now. They were the best..Now it's Modern and Sally's.. can't go wrong with either one! 🍕 Enjoy!
3.5 hour wait for that little thin crust pizza that would probably take two minutes to cook in the coal fire oven is absolute BS. I mean unless he's got 500 pizzas ahead of him this whole town must do nothing but eat pizza every day. It makes no logical sense other than doing it for marketing and exclusivity.
Good review, but if you eat them fresh at the table, no box......I have to flip Sally's and Modern. When Sally's nails a pie and you eat it right out of the oven, it's ridiculous. Plus, their OG tomato pie is really the top of the heap. The sauce is just next level in my opinion.
If you're a sauce lover, it's Sally's. If you're a cheese lover, it's Modern. I lived in Florence Italy for almost a year and ate pizza all over Italy, including Naples and Rome. The freshness of ingredients and overall taste of some of those pies were spectacular, but if I had to eat one pie for the rest of my life it would be the OG tomato at Sally's.
Great opinion! Thanks for sharing
Sallys Plain Pie with garlic for me! Modern Egg Plant is to die for! Both are the best in my opinion. Modern does have pizza smell even on the street!
100% agree with this, when you have a fresh out of the oven Sallys pie, it wipes the floor with every one of them. If you wanna get an idea for just how good their dough is, order the meat platter appetizer, the bread in that app is plain pizza dough with a bit of seasoning on top and you really realize the dough they use is next level. Sauce, dough, authenticity, nothing beats a Sallys pie when they nail it. Its the only pie they could burn and i would still enjoy(and it does happen, they arent super consistent, but i will forever belong to the church of Sallys).
I’ve only had Pepe’s. Always burnt, not a fan. Prefer pizza from Long Island, never had a bad slice.
Dude. Cmon. Your review was comprised from the start. You cannot judge ANY pizza that’s been steaming in a cardboard box for God knows how long?!? Get outta here.
The idea was for me to taste them all back to back. Based on the feedback, I might have to do another video except right at each location!
I loved your reaction when you bit into Modern’s slice 😂❤ I’ve gotta try it!
Were the pies in the box too long? Otherwise, a solid video.
I'm not sure I understand why there is a looks score..looks don't really mean anything. It's about the taste isn't it? A pizza might look crappy but taste amazing. Or look amazing but taste crappy. I'd always go with the one that has a better taste which makes the look score meaningless. I can get behind saying a pizza looks good or not good but to give it a score seems odd. However, that's just my opinion. Still I really enjoyed your review.
Rating cold pizzas that sit it the box for a long time is a ridiculous waste of time . Some of the pizza in the world and you ruin all of them
Don't forget Zuppardi's
just outside NewHaven
in WestHaven on
Union Ave.
Loved this! But the Modern guy charred it up... which is also how I like it.
This young man doesn’t know how good Pepe’s used to be back in the day. They have definitely changed the recipe since the takeover and expansion. My parents started taking us there in the early 60’s and if you think it is good now, then you surely missed a great thing.
Iam surprised you didn't try zuppardi's in west haven. they are in the club and been around since 1934 ish
Pepe's Bridgeport location is still making killer pies. Pepe's in New Haven fell off a little. It used to be the best, and they might be the best with toppings (especially their pepper & onion pizza).
That pizza looks so good! And so does the man eating the pizza!!! 😍🥵
Hey now!
Haven't tried bar. However, it clearly looks different in terms of being a much thinner crust. Sally's is very light on the cheese but generous on the sauce, which I like and which makes it my favorite in the New Haven area. But you have to get there and get in line well before it opens at 5pm. Another great apizza is Zuppardi's in West Haven, which is most like Modern of these four. But if I go to Pepe's or Modern or Zuppardi's, I order it with "light cheese" and in my opinion it's better that way. Less filling. Allows one to eat more tasty slices comfortably.
I'm in central CT so I rarely ever go to New Haven but there is a Sally's Apizza opening up in Wethersfield soon can't wait to try it. Pepe's expanded locations and opened up a restarant in West Hartford about 15 years ago so I tried that one and honestly felt it was overrated. One good New Haven style pizza that I tried and thought was really good is Christo's in Wallingford.
Don’t know your channel. You like Dave think thin n burnt is it. People want to enjoy a pizza not rip up their mouth just trying to eat it. Totinos lookin pie. Burnt Totinos. Enjoy the dough the sauce the cheese not chomp through this crap. Everybody has fav. More power to ya.
Where Sallys Beats Everyone is the sauce.
Great video.
I would've done it immediately taste.
But the result is the same.
I have it ranked exactly the same
🤙
Well to be fair to him one to take some back to back to back to back so you can kind of compare in real time so be a little easy on him I have heard that modern and Sally's are the two best head and shoulders puppies has the name but he just second best at this point😊
Your eating out of the box. Have to eat in the place for best taste and crisp. Don't forget the Foxon park soda.
Before I even watch this CRAP, Sally’s is obviously number one!!!
Fuoco in Cheshire the best
Modern isn’t coal fired! Come on dude! Do your basic research before making a review on small business and legendary pizza
Just a heads - we don't put Mozz on a pizza. Except for Bar I've eaten at each of the others many times and NEVER put Mozz on any pizza.
This is such a BS review. No person can get a true gauge of oizza thats been sitting out for too long.
Nice review except I kept thinking the pizzas are gonna get cold.
Barstool copycat 🙄😑🤦 undercarriage same pizza bites same wow he needs a Frankie behind the camera 😅😂
Haha what no to do on a pizza review. Have you never actually eaten pizza 🤦♂️
Reviewing cold soggy pizza. Rookie move. You’ll figure it out though.
What is the point of eating cold pizzas?🥶
It’s the chuckle after Sally’s for me. Good stuff
From memory, Pepe's looked less regular, more like a "New Haven abeetz" before they branched out. I think that they became more standardized.
My favorite was always Sally's but Modern and Pepe's not far behind.
I never had ahbeetz at Bar while I was sober.
Zuppardi's in West Haven is right up there
Going to New haven in 2 weeks to see Chris Webby. Definitely will be trying some Sally's, and modern pizza. Thx fir the video
Modern is my favorite can’t beat that crust!!
Sally's makes the best tasting sauce and cheese pie ANYWHERE but if you think Modern slightly edges them out I won't hold it against you Lol
New haven and pepes is really good
Modern’s cheese is out of this world
What sort of cheese do they use?
Pizza looks burnt and oily.. and what's the deal with "a"pizza ?
Great Reviews , Modern is # 1
Wonder if you can get it not burnt? Rather pass on the carcinogenic charcoal.
The only true test is a BLIND test, and over several rounds, like at least 5 but 7 is better. AND, tasting should be limited to 3 bites per slice. If you wanna go even crazier, have them hot out of the oven, then another phase at room temp.
Oh mannn! Great reaction man, thought you were going to pick Sally’s 😮
Connecticut Native here I had all 4 myself. And In my opinion Modern is the best.
I’ve been hearing a lot of that lately.
Should've tried Zuparrdi's.
Frank Sinatra once had a Pepe's pizza flown to him in Las Vegas.
Im familiar with pepes and Sally's but thats only because iv seen it on dave portnoys pizza review with barstool sports.
Stop lying newyork pizza#1
Dude is reviewing cold pizza 😂
Love what you have done comparing four of the best but man do em one at a time. Show pics of all 4 but do the reviews when hot and fresh.
You should do a NYC review next. You'll like it much better than that burnt & dry Connecticut crap.
I’ve had Angelo’s and John’s of Bleecker Street. I love NYC pizza!
Cold pizza review.
Las de Oracio’s pizza son mejores
Modern is 10 for me
Very fair review. Bar is not in the class of the "Holy Trinity", even though there are some who insist that it is. "Bar" is a "bar" pie, not a NH style pie, per se. It's too thin and a bit "crackery", just not in the same league. For Pepe's, the pie they gave you looked undercooked by almost a minute, I think your score would have been higher than that had it been cooked properly.
For Modern, there are many who say it's better than Pepe's and Sally's, and the pie you had there was a great looking pie. I've been to Modern many times, and they've just never convinced
me that they are better than Sally's or Pepe's. But again, that pie you had there was definitely a better looking pie than Pepe's. Sally's is a bit trickier for me, as before they were sold,
their pie was unassailable, for me, it was a level above Pepe's and Modern. However, they have slipped a bit since the sale. The pies still look great, but they are "drier", than they used to be, there is just something missing. Still, better than just about anything else out there, but you have to have "history" with them to understand where I'm coming from.
Overall, though, you nailed it. Sally's does have the "tangy" sauce, which distinguishes it from the others. Good job.
Thank you for sharing. And appreciate your feedback!
I did some research on all of them prior. I had no idea how the list was going to shake out in the moment. It was a fun video to make!
Totally love this review of the review and sums up much of what I was thinking. I really expected Pepes to do better but I also agree it didn't look cooked enough.
I've never had Modern but now I really need to try it. Excellent work and fun to see the NH Holy Trinity reviewed lime this.
"Modern" is the most "approachable" pie for people not accustomed to Wooster Street pizza. If you were to bring somebody from Indiana that regularly eats "Pizza Hut" and thinks it's great, probably the best introduction to NH pizza would be Modern.
For me, Modern is the perfection of the "traditional" pizza. Pepe's and Sally's are on a different level, and not everybody is going to be able to appreciate them. They will think it's "burned", etc., because the crust is charred in spots. Pepe's and Sally's occupy their own space on Mt. Olympus, not everybody is equipped to appreciate it.
If you've been eating Pizza Hut and Domino's your entire life, it's a culture shock.

Toppings are for amateurs.
I think you are spot on on your review . There are soooooo many great pizza ,apizza in Connecticut . If you like pizza like I do we are extremely spoiled .
Modern’s my favorite too. Have it every week.
Modern cannolis now modern pizza…what can’t they do
Modern is the best
Sally’s all day!
Next video should be tomato pies in New Jersey!
Boring video
you did a great job no doubt.....and you loved what you did......keep going dude....well wishes!
Thanks, man
Yum- I used to live on St. John street around the corner from Pepe and Sally, modern was a few minutes longer of a walk. New Haven Pizza is the best- I miss it
Pizza capital of what????? WORLD ...NOT! ..for that u have to road ITALY! but in USA together DI FARA as special guest star from NY are hands down the best ! a real italian soul in USA. A Italian could eating pizza in USA only in New Haven and at Di Fara. Chicago (Deep Dish Pizza) - Nyc ( Nyc Stile ) - Detroit ( Detroit style ) are american styles and cant be compared to New Haven.
Yes- the world
@@Susanskipp1 ajajajajajja shut up aahhahah
fight me! Go ahead!
How can you judge by getting them all at once they must've got cold smh 🤦🏽
straightforward review. I agree. Pepe's franchised too much and the consistency suffered. Even at the OG location one day you'll get the best pie you ever had, another day you'll get something mediocre. Meanwhile Sally's and Modern are killing it. BAR is solid, especially when you're there for a show and need some pizza after drinking a bit too much.
Good Cold Pizza Review.
You are not obnoxious like Portnoy. How will you get clicks? Like the bifurcated scoring on looks and taste. Brilliant. But all the pizza is cold. Next time do some editing. In 2023 it is possible to eat hot pizza with some reverse editing. Love the unprompted laughing. Gives the reviews the maniacal touch. The bells at the end are worth waiting for.
i hope one day i can try these
frank pepe is like sallys uncle aint it
It was originally started by Frank Pepe's sister, Filomena. Then her son, Sal, eventually took it over.
So yes, that would make Sal one of Frank Pepe's nephews!
I'm with this guy- 50 years old - lived near New Haven my entire life and eaten all three. Sally's hardly has any flavor to the sauce and crust is too cardboard like, despite that fact that Sally's looks amazing. Modern has a flavor to the dough that none of the others have which sets them apart- Modern is the best hands down - just have to go light on the Mozz.
What a perfect review of exactly what everyone is looking for. A comparison of the top 4 places in New Haven. Thanks so much for doing this, and doing it right. Hopefully this vid blows up for ya
I dont trust anybody that eats cold pizza. You lose before you started!!
BS. Best pizza on the planet, hands down is Tommy’s in Gettysburg, Pa.
How bout comparing it with NYC,s Lucali,D Fara,Una & Le Industrie..
And i just want to add....how many people just oder cheese on their pizza..very few
u review pizza, pretty well, I have tasted pizzas too. Florinas, is still the best, thin crust, Boston!
David. Chicago also has Home Run Inn Order lwell done” which only crisps the crust.
i grew up in new haven and learned about pizza at pepe's. I can almost taste it. it made my mouth water
awesome video, last one I haven't tried yet is BAR but the others are so good it makes it hard to go elsewhere
you re gonna eat them all cold and judge them..dayum man..missed it
The first stop is always Sally"s. #WaySheGoes Fun video.
I did not like your review technique at all.
Modern is not coal fired. Oil fired oven. Got to clarify that. 🍕
Bro killed these pizzas by leaving them in the box for 7 years
Agree with the rankings…. But I will say you did not get a good Pepes pie. Usually they are more well done.
Try Roseland in Derby, and Zuppardis in West Haven. They are just as good.
Nice video for your 4th video on your channel!!! You’re doing a good job! Good luck!
Thanks man, appreciate it! Same to you
Good video, but that chinstrap has got to gooooo 😅
Dammm at least some pepperoni 🤔🫣🤥
Gay or not, this guy knows his pizza. Respect.
I'm not gay
Actually the best way to it it is at the pizza shop right out the oven not in a box 2 hours later
Agreed. But these were in the box for 30 minutes tops. Just like ordering delivery. I had to get good shots for you to enjoy!!
ahh great video man!!!!!!!
