A few years ago, my family climbed into a van in Ft. Lauderdale to go to a cruise ship in Miami. When the driver told me his name was Howard, my daughter immediately texted me from the back seat about this song. Within minutes we had confirmed it was the same, Howard. Your description was spot on. He didn't know that he was in a song. We played it for him. He loved it. She took a picture with him and posted it and tagged you. You liked the picture. She screamed. Made her day!
3 different concerts, over multiple years, and he STILL finds way of engaging the audience! It's so fun and leave you feeling `full` at the end of a concert. Thank you for all you do, Ben.
I'm a songwriter in Nashville that has had a nice dose of success (dealt a good hand) but every time I listen to Ben Rector and especially this song, I know I'm listening to a great great writer and master performer.
Ben, you're such an overlooked talent. If everyone saw the world the way you see it, we would all be better people. You're an amazing singer and songwriter. My favorite song is Old Friends and it punches me right in the tear ducts every time I give it a listen. Your ability to relate to anyone and everyone is a gift from God. Keep being yourself my friend, you are a bright light in the swallowing darkness.
Ben should do an interview/podcast or visit Howard/Danny. Drive around town again w/ their famous minivan/car or have dinner with their families. That will be memorable.
This song reminds me of my grandfather. I broke my ankle weeks before starting college and commuted from home. I actually could drive pretty well with my left foot but he insisted he take me to school to know that i got there safely. Grandpa dropped me off and would go back home afterwards and drive back again in the afternoon. I just google mapped it....254 miles....each day....for 15 weeks. What a man
Humility = this song. I too work hard but am a very blessed man dealt better cards then many. Thank you Ben. This song is one of my all time favorites and every time I hear it I stop and thank God for his goodness.
Gosh, what a thought that is. "I'm 1/2 the man of the men that drive me places." The deck we got dealt, some are celebrated, some driving people places. The fact that Ben would think of this and write a song to give attention to the cabbies, says so much about him and his honest humility. Ya just don't see this in most famous people. Thank you Ben Rector. May God continue to bless you! 🙏🏼 ♥️
Oh man. This hits entirely too close to home. Howard is, in essence, my father. Worked hard to earn ends meet from childhood. Up early every morning to drive people from the airport. Usually always a smile and a joke, except when his work is grueling and he's under appreciated. But he's always done the work because of his dedication to our family. He's always taught me that no job is beneath us, and it's important to stay humble. We nearly lost him this year, and it was the most terrifying experience of my life. I may be a woman, but I don't know if I can ever be half the "man" of the man and incredible example he's set. Hold your loved ones close. And appreciate the people serving you. (And tip your drivers. Most of them are honest, good people.♥️) Thank you, Ben, for being able to bring this to light.
My hubby and I had a rough 2023. So for 2024 we decided to be spontaneous and hop on a flight to Denver from Washington state to see you in concert. You brought joy to us during a difficult time. Thank you for sharing your music and thank you to your family for sharing you.
I wish there was more music like this instead of all these songs about sex and love because life is about so much more than just romantic love and sex. Gratitude, humility, and overcoming struggle; I want more songs about this. I love this song, his voice is so good too.
Ben rector, I came to your concert once. I took a picture with you and it was a dream come true. I love your music. You are like, literally the BEST EVER! You probably won’t see this but your awesome!
Ben Rector, you are one special and most talents singer/songwriter in todays world! Thank you for wanting to share your gift with us all. When he sang this song and White Dress at the concert I went to back in 2015, those were the best moments of the night!
As someone who has driven a shuttle bus at an airport for the past 13 years, it is nice to feel appreciated in song form. One of my passengers recommended this song to me and it is nice to not feel invisible for a small moment in time. I am wanting to save up to go to a coding bootcamp and become fluent in coding so i can relate to Danny and being here at all hours of the day sometimes to make sure people can get to their flights.
This song is a truly beautiful life lesson and reminder. Every single person within your day has a life we cannot fathom, yet without them our days wouldn't be complete. I am on such a binge of your music right now, and it's filled me with such joy.
I got to perform as part of a choir in a concert with Ben. Out of all the songs he did, this was by far the most memorable to me. We got to rehearse with him once and he is such a humble guy, and a great musician.
I don't often comment on songs.. but this was worth the time.. Ben this song brought me to tears. So so beautiful, and humbling ❤️ what a gorgeous song
My favorite song of yours, my journey through adulthood often aligns with the content of your videos the year they are released. All I can say is keep going. There is a lot of us lost not knowing how to take how we feel and vocalize it. Help if you can, because goddamn if you aren't talented enough to do it.
Thank you for your music. It is nice to hear honest and beautiful songs that people can actually relate to. Please never stop making this kind of music. ❤
Hi Ben, I don't know if you can notice this but I am dreaming that one day you can visit and perform kn my country the Philippines. I've been a huge fan and been introducing your music to my closest friends and they love you too now.
It wasn’t him, not really. But you wrote that first verse about my father in Colorado. I can’t even write about it much, because he had to stop driving for Uber several years ago because of his health. It was downhill fast from there..: and he just hasn’t been the same since the stroke he had not many months after Uber told him he wasn’t well enough to drive. But I’m going to cherish the time we have. He’s the one who taught me what I’m supposed to expect from a man.

This story brings a tear to my eye...
😲👌❤ truly a great song about great people.
That's crazy!
This is amazing. This is the first Ben Rector song I ever heard, and is THE reason that I fell in love with his music
Oh my goodness! I would love to see that picture. 🥺 That is so cool.
When you find an artist who sounds better live than on a recording, you know he's amazing :)
He sing better both.
No doubt. Such a pure tone to his voice.

Mr Rector , this is the most beautiful song I have ever has the pleasure to listen to. Love from Scotland. xx
It takes a man to recognize the talent of others and their contributions to the world. As my kids say, "Nice!"

This is such a meaningful, kind song. Wish we all saw each other this way. Each with a story. Each with dignity. Thanks for writing good songs, Ben.
God his music is good for me. I could be on either side and still cry. Thank you, Ben!

I don't know why, but this song makes me cry. I love Ben's heart!! What an awesome storyteller/song writer!!
One of the most talented artists whom people fail to recognise. Waiting to see a world where talent is appreciated more than clout.
Lovely song. Lovely sentiment. ❤

It’s quite refreshing to listen to music that has such a beautiful meaning to the lyrics. Love ya Ben!

I was lucky enough to hear this song live on Mr. Rectors Grand Old Opry debut. Thanks
How can one not feel struck by this song. idk a word for it, piercing. Beautiful.
To be humble such an important trait.
This is the reason why I love Ben Rector!!
This song is a truly beautiful life lesson and reminder. Every single person within your day has a life we cannot fathom, yet without them our days wouldn't be complete. I am on such a binge of your music right now, and it's filled me with such joy.
This man had my respect after fewer lyrics than anyone else ever.
Damn can we make humility a trend. This is it!
This is one of my all-time favorite songs by Ben Rector. I listen to it on repeat all the time. Keep up the good work!
We need a little more Ben Rector in our lives and in 2021.
This is my favorite of my all favorite songs from Ben
This song was ok...then he added the mustache...and now it’s a masterpiece.
It’s amazing what mustaches can do.

Howard drives a minivan with the cruise ships from Ft. Lauderdale
And it's been that way since 1994
Does his business on a flip phone with the most obnoxious ringtone
I didn't ask but I can tell he's from New York
And he spoke proudly of his daughter and that this fall she'd be in college
And that he always wished he'd gotten his degree
You can tell he came from nothing, built a future out of hustling
And somehow I'm the one you people pay to see
Oh isn't that just the way it goes
You're dealt a good hand and you get celebrated
Oh how am I the only one who knows
I'm half the man of the men that drive me places
Danny showed up early fifteen minutes till five thirty
Making sure that I'd be on my morning flight
He said he'd love to fix computers, but that he can't until he's fluent
So he spends his driving money taking class at night
He wore a neatly ironed dress shirt and he helps his kids with homework
And deep inside I couldn't help but ask myself
Why that at night I'm up on stage, everybody knows my name
While Danny's early picking up somebody else
Oh isn't that just the way it goes
You're dealt a good hand and you get celebrated
Oh how am I the only one who knows
I'm half the man of the men that drive me places
And now everything's not given, I work hard to make my living
But I'll give credit where I think credits due
Maybe you got dealt a good hand
Maybe you play it the best that you can
But I don't know how far you'd walk without those cards
In Howard and Danny's working shoes
But that's just the way it goes
You're dealt a good hand and you get celebrated
Oh how am I the only one who knows
I'm half the man of the men that drive me places
