Maria is just a voice of sanity in the design world. She is all about using not the most expensive or trendy but what works with what you have to include-most people certainly can’t afford to throw out and start over every time they move or get tired of what they have.

    Hi Maria!
Love your designer tips! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! 🫶🏼
I am curious…my husband & I are empty nesters & have been living in a nicer apartment community for 7 years. You know with apartment living comes limitations on changes to the place. We have had the same flat, commercial paint that shows every small bump, knick, etc. My jean color rubbed off on the wall one time! 😱
So, if you choose to paint it yourself, it has to be their one chosen color or if you choose to paint different colors, it has to be approved and then primed back before move out.
We also have a beloved 13.5 y.o pup who seems to be nearing the end of life on earth. 😢 We have kept carpet due to his hip dysplasia and GOLPP. We live in 852 sq ft. (includes outdoor patio). There is laminate in the bathroom, entry & kitchen. The rest is cheap, low quality carpet. I love the coziness of carpet but dislike the reality of carpet & what lurks within. Lol (dirt, dog hair & occasional doggo accidents, craft beer spills ahem…husband😂, upkeep, etc.). The allergy factor is high. I know we have cement subfloor. I have been trying to find inexpensive, nonslip, dog friendly flooring alternatives with the idea that we ask property management to tear up carpet & put flooring in ourselves. When we move out eventually, they will be doing many new updates anyhow.
It would cost us $200 more/month to have them do a refurb on top of the yearly rent increase, so I would like our flooring alternative to be less than that. I also want it to be something I like and can live with after our pup is gone.
Any thoughts on a light colored, cork flooring that we can put some area rugs on top? Thanks Maria! 😊
PS-I understand I also need color balance to pull it off. Need to get myself a MK color wheel! 🫠

My biggest challenge in picking a color for my open concept home is the massive 22 ft red brick fireplace. It’s like a big monster that doesn’t play well with anyone! (Except Urbane bronze but that would be a bit much.)
Despite windows on all 4 sides, house feels dark and drab. Edgecomb looked like a big purple bruise in my lighting. How do I find a color that doesn’t fight with my big brick fireplace?

Do these warm neutrals look very different in a north facing room?

Do check out her blog... she has many posts about this. The main thing, from what i could grasp, is choosing a starting point for colour. I really like the idea of starting from an artwork you like, or a coloured sofa!
