You should scrub the octopus with coarse salt to get the slime off and rinse before cooking. After cooking rinse it under cold water and clean the skin before preparing it. It will taste much better this way.
Jay mate, lovely little octopus that. Perfect eater. Quick tip, freeze it overnight before boiling it up. The freezing and thawing process will break down the proteins making it much softer after cooking. Boil until the thickest part of the tentacles fall freely from a fork then portion and lightly fry in butter with a little freshly crushed garlic.

There really is no need to beat the animal against a rock or, to scrub or scrape it before (or after) cooking. If you can get over the texture of the suckers and the skin, you'll be consuming some of the tastiest and most nutritious parts. Keep it simple, no need for loads of seasoning or flavourings. In the case of octopus and in fact all cephlopods, less is more. Enjoy!

Most folks I've seen cook octopus, dispatch it, clean out the mantel and remove the eyeballs, scrub the skin off under running water and using either a salt scrub or a good stiff scrub brush, then some cut it in portions for a quick hot sear or a low simmer for hours, the end result is firm yet tender to the tooth.
Here in Portugal it is very common and we have several ways of cooking it, all of them wonderful, of the three the one we like least is squid, you have to remove the beak, the entrails and the eyes and wash it well with salt to remove all the stickiness. and then dip it in boiling water three times and cook it for 30, 40 minutes, it’s wonderful.
Couple thing: salt scrub your Octopus prior to cocking. If you can cook your octopus for longer at around 82C. 180F. Also some people dont like the skin so you can take it off and just eat the meat. Last thing just lightly saute it with some spices try not to re fry it because it may get tough again. Octopus is truly a delicacy when cooked right. Just keep trying it don’t give up it takes time to make a good octopus!
If you ever get another octopus, you can boil them without water, cover the pot with a tight fitting lid and they will release more than enough natural juices to boil them. This way it retains the most flavour as you aren't diluting anything with water. You want to use less salt for this method (You can simply start it off without any salt and once it's released it's juices you can then adjust the salt to taste) You can also give them a good "scrubbing" with salt before cooking to further tenderize them and remove the slimy texture. Worth another try if you find another one. Once boiled they are great simply grilled on a griddle plate or better yet, over some coals.
Do you ever net smelt during their spawning runs up the rivers in the early spring? Used to do that with my dad as a kid here in the Upper Pennisula of MIchigan. It was a great time! Middle of the night. . .chest waders on. . . long handled net in hand, right at the mouth of some river as it flows into Lake Superior. Once the run is on, you can scoop up a gallon at a time!

As you've already heard salt scrub your octopus first. Tip when boiling, get water to a simmering boil and slowly dip your octopus tenticles first several times into the water then the whole animal (this will curl up the Tenticles faster and more evenly) my method for cooking was i boiled mine for 40 mins and drained, made a marinade of soy sauce, honey, minced fresh garlic, oliveoil, pepper, italian herbs, put it in the marinade for 30 mins, then grilled the marinaded octopus for 10 min and brushed the rest of the marinade on whilst under the grill. Finish off with olive oil and chives. 😊

What an adventure today ! I wonder if you sliced the tentacles into slices before you fry them if that would make a difference ??? I have only had it once, made for me by some Chinese friends and I found it very rubbery but I loved the dipping sauce. Can't wait to see what you find next !
I used to work on a prawn and lobster creel boat from Uig on Skye and we would frequently find half a dozen creels with prawn or lobster shells in them and one pot with an octopus inside. The critters would follow the link ropes and could seriously reduce the productivity of a fleet of creels. If they are proliferating I can understand how they are adversely affecting the income of the local fishermen.
Good fishing in the minch, at one time I thought about getting into fishing there. I lived in Broadford a bit, my dad was there many years. I lived in Lewis as well At one time I was the most frequent person on the ferry outta Uig to Tarbet fir a couple years doing about 6 journeys a week. Diffrent job now and rarely go to skye now. Lovely little octopus, I always skin mine first and only cook them briefly then it won't be tough like yours was, you over cooked it. If you don't cook them briefly then you have to do what you did and cook them for a very long time anything in between and it'll be tough. You can even eat it raw. By the way I never use any salt. They're absolutely delicious, I love them.
Try cleaning the octopus first it'll help with the flavor. Freeze overnight and then once it's thawed at a whole lemon slice in half to the boiling water that will help further break down the fibers and give you a softer texture

I went octopus fishing in Cyprus and the boat I was on had a BBQ at the back. The skipper told me that you shouldn't eat the fresh octopus. They should be frozen to tenderise them so we eat the ins that were caught the previous weeks catch. They were lovely and tender and not at all slimy.

Aren't you ment to gut n clean them , remove the beak ect . Also i think you can clean em after a quiet blanch then on the grill . I definitely think you should look up some methods and try again! Certainly an interesting video dont give in on the 🐙 , done properly it will be great.

Might be because lobster and crab populations used to be much much higher as well, so they didn't have much of an impact on the overall population. Now that there's not as many crabs and lobsters they make more impact.
You definitely needed a grill for the Octopus.... that is best way to cook it and add some olive oil (after boiling it). The grilling will get rid of the slimy taste.
Would’ve been a lot better if you would’ve grilled it and just for reference next time, you cook it in a pan if you ever do it again don’t put breadcrumbs on it or flour. Just put it in the pan slightly crispy on the outside.
Next time you catch a octopus, after you boil it, then eat it. Don't cook it a second time or it turns into rubber. The best octopus I have eaten was in a Greek restaurant, the Greeks know how to cook a octopus!!
I was obsessed with octopus for years and then I moved to a place where octopus is more popular than burgers. I don't like it any more. Shame. It's just too rich. Squid is yummy though.

Holy, octopus is much nicer only briefly cooked, they'rebeautifully tender then. Nowhere near as long as you decide.

Hammer or freezing it would have tenterized it before cooking , also you need salt and water and scrub it before cooking it as well

The Italians throw the octopus at the floor to tenderizer it, then rub it with salt, also freezing it helps. Should be ready good then.
