    to read the tombstones better, you can use a flashlight, point it along the sides so light shows across the stone.

    I'm sure there are many like Gunkles in PA, but one that comes to my mind is Bart's EUM church in south central PA, 620 Bart's Church Rd., just East of Littlestown. It was built in the 1700s, on land donated by John and Maria Bart. Apparently he was quite wealthy as it was part of 700 acres originally. The Bart house is just down the road about a quarter mile west at 535 BC Rd.. John and Maria are both buried at the church along with one or two children if memory serves. The area has developed quite a bit in 40 years. If you're in the area, give it a look.

    My 3X grandfather is buried there. His name is Abraham Fertig, and you showed it. The church across the street would put a flag on his headstone. This is the first time I don't see a flag. My Fertig married my Kramer's. It would have been cool if we would have been cousins. LOL

      Abraham Fertig is my 6th great grandfather. He would have been too young to fight in the Revolutionary War and his son, also Abraham, died before the Civil War. Not sure why they would be putting a flag on either grave unless it was for War of 1812. I haven't done any research looking for veterans of that war among my ancestors.

      @@DonnaJG111 He just puts a flag on his grave for me. It's not because of any war reason. I think he's buried there as a early settler, not because of the war.

    landscapers probably pull them to mow and just stick them back by old ones, probably don't realize what they are, or care, but I appreciate you do. happy holidays !

    Been around Pine Grove a lot. Never knew all this history was here. You are right. Many stories there. Great find.

    If you film the markers and apply a filter in a photo editing program you can usually bring out the lettering.

    Cliff, I have Kramers in my ancestry too. Anna Maria Kramer married Andreas Krammes. You might look at the Summer Hill and Brown's church cemeteries for Kramers as I think that's where some of the Krammes family was buried.
    One of my Revolutionary War ancestors, Bernhard Zimmerman is supposedly buried there at Gunkle's Cemetery too. I don't remember if he has a stone there. It's been a while since I walked that cemetery. Thanks for sharing your tour of the cemetery.

    Thank you for not using chalk or doing gravestone rubbings. As to the markers being wrong- sometime the volunteers are scarce and the ones who help have no clue.

    There’s a very old Revolutionary War cemetery located near Lafayette Hill, I believe, I delivered freight to a house out there, and a few feet away stood a very old Church, with a old cemetery, I walked thru it a little bit, some of the headstones are hard to read, like the cemetery you are at, and, one of the oldest Cemeteries in Philly is in the Fishtown section of Philly, I saw it once when I was working and I need to get back there, I forget the name of it though. Tons of history in the Philly Metro area and Berks County, is Schuylkill County The next County North of Berks county, I believe so. I camp,in Berks county but it’s been a few years. Happy trails.

    Makes me wonder if there is somebody in charge of the upkeep of the cemetery. My guess is no, witch kinda sucks.

    Hi Cliff, very strange why the markers are in the wrong place, it could be vandals though.
    I would like to wish You and your Family a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, much love. xx 🎄❄🎁🎀

    My mother who passed away 3 years ago, was big in to geneology. She would go to cemeteries and spray shaving cream on the inscription, scrape it to take the excess off and take a picture. The shaving cream would fill in the inscription and it would make it easy to read. I am not sure if this was safe for the tombstones. She would leave the shaving cream in the inscription because she believed it would evaporate or wash off during the next rain. I hope she did not harm any. If she did, it was not intentional.

      I got to thinking, those ancestors spelled the name Kunkle. So they might be and might not be related to those folks buried in that cemetery.

    The marker "GAR" Grand Army OF the Republic was formed in 1866 for those vets that were in the civil War on the Union side that included the Navy.
    I "think" (not sure) DAR markers are those found at Revolutionary War veterans graves. DAR stand's for Daughters of the American Revolution , a group, who came up with the idea of marking the graves.

    Local information is some tomb stones washed away by flooding. Vandalism could be the the issue with the markers it has been in the past.

    Sometimes, chalk rubbings are frowned upon. Wonder if it couple be that there are more than 1 person per plot (2nd person added later) but not marked on the headstone? I agree, if the markers are placed wrong, it is disrespectful. Interesting video TWW!!! Thumbs up!!

    Cliff. Upon checking the designation GAR means grand army of the republic not necessarily just for civil war?

    • @R32R38
      @R32R38 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The GAR was strictly for Civil War veterans. Each year they held a national gathering called an encampment. The last one was in 1949.

    Quite a fascinating programme - thanks for making it. One reason why gravestone rubbings are frowned on is because, if a stone or brass (inside a church) are particularly famous, either for the person beneath or the script and style, repeatedly making rubbings can eventually erase the inscription. Quite fascinating to see such early stones - the earliest I've come across in England dates from around the same time as your Revolutionary War veterans in this film.

    GAR organization represents the Revolutionary War, not Civil War.

    • @bobh9475
      @bobh9475 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is incorrect. The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army (United States Army), Union Navy (U.S. Navy), and the Marines who served in the American Civil War. It was founded in 1866 in Decatur, Illinois. (Wikipedia)
