    I can’t imagine a world where suddenly having unexpected blockers available is worse than a +0/+3 your opponent can pay to turn off for the same price

      I'd actually played Battle Cry when it was a new card and because of its age and relative obscurity, it can almost play like a Settle the Wreckage where you only have three open. If you're playing an aggressive white deck and leave three mana open, an opponent really might not know what kind of fresh hell they're in for...

      I was thinking about how I get to activate my strong white creatures twice in a turn. This card doesn't have to be a combat trick, it can win games thought.

    in defense of rapid fire, in an old ask wizards answer it was explained rampage's effect was changed partway through legends design. it was originally intended to be a creature with rampage x can attack x times. that caused a lot of rules problems at the time so it was swapped out with something less complicated.

    As mentioned on the Worst Instants list: you can also combine Glyph of Destruction with Regeneration/Indestructible effects, like Wall of Bone or Amaranthine Wall, but just like I said there: that's still especially narrow.

    (2:46) Yeah, I've tried combining Glyph of Destruction with Fling in the past, and I usually couldn't get it to work well enough.
    (10:37) Rhystic Study? I knew that was a valuable card, but never knew it could be used as a combat trick. :P (You obviously meant Rhystic Shield, of course.)
    (11:15) It does a second thing, actually. It untaps all your white creatures. I can see that being useful to surprise your opponent when they think you're wide open to attack.

    It seems like half of the cards on every "worst cards" video are cards from 1994-1996 that are very underpowered for their cost, are extremely situational, or both. I'd like to see what these lists look like if you ignored cards that were only printed in Magic's first 5-10 years.

    • @LampreyKisses
      @LampreyKisses ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, he could make a "top 100 worst Ice Age cards" video and just list almost every card printed in Ice Age. Nothing like a set that introduces a mechanic (snow-covered lands, in this case) and then prints cards that almost exclusively punish any player for using snow-covered lands. Not to mention the Yu-gi-oh levels of text on most Ice Age cards.

    Rapid Fire still sucks terrible without the "play before defense is chosen" clause. If you could cast it after blockers are declared, the Rampage 2 wouldn't do anything since the bonus triggers when the extra blockers are declared.

There's something about the fact that these cards will never get put on "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)" though that just makes me feel like they're not *perfect.* But hey, I did once try to make an EDH deck around Wicked Reward, so that card gets bonus points.

    This makes Rhystic study look like mutagenic growth.

  • @Dreikoo
    @Dreikoo ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think battlecry is more useful for the untap effect than the buff, because if you are tapped out your opponent may attack you thinking it'll go through but you then untap everything and block.

    • @matthewgagnon9426
      @matthewgagnon9426 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, that one seems enormously better than Rhystic Shield just for the untap alone. You can tap something twice in a turn, or all out your opponent when they have lethal on you and you don't have it on them. They'll let it through and take a ton of damage and then you can surprise them by being able to block. Now it's still not great, but I can't really fathom it being the worst combat trick.

  • @jaceg810
    @jaceg810 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think battle cry actually has a purpose, untapping white creatures, while narrow, can be quite an okay effect in decks that want to tap creatures for value, not saying its a good card, just saying that way more restrictive cards like rapid fire are probably worse by a landslide, since they sever close to no purpose and lacking utillity.
    in addition battle cry can be cast anytime for a storm/cast spell trigger, which can add even more value, not a lot, however its a thing it can do.

To be honest a full board +0/+1 for two instant isn't a bad rate even though it isn't great, there are plenty of +0/+2 for three which I feel is a worse rate. It just needs the right deck to shine but it could pull its weight.

    The top 1 isn't that bad, although to be fair to Nizzahon what makes it not bad is not really an application of the card as a combat trick. The boost to the creatures is middling at best but the untap effect's ceiling is enormously high. Including multicolor creatures there are tons of potential creatures where using their tap activated ability twice is brutal, and I play a Marneus Calgar token deck right now where untapping all my white creatures at instant speed would both enable more effective attacking and potentially blow an opponent out of the water on their attack with a single 3 mana card. Thinking about it I'm tempted to include it, but given that the sets released after the 40k decks were very token-focused, I've already had multiple difficult cut down sessions and don't want to do that again.

My opponent is at 12, i attack all out, i sac the blocked guy to have unblocked guy deal 4 damage extra, then i cast face lightning bolt, then incenerate, and for 5 mana i am doing 10 damage plus two more from my attacker. @@matthewgagnon9426 not even remotely similar situation. I'm merely pointing out a point that he missed which if you wanted to tap down your creatures to convoke, activate abilities, combo off etc and then use it to untap your board your opponent will have 1 more toughness on all his blockers cause the effect doesn't specify "your" blockers. It just adds a free boost for your opponent's response

    Battle Cry may be the worst combat trick, but it works great on a W/x soldier tribal deck with Catapult Master.

    Battle Cry may be a bad combat trick but the untap isn't bad for Tappers decks. People play Village Bell Ringer for the same effect.

    I just noticed something very peculiar about your channel :
    Your historically most important format is Top 10, and more recently you've beginning to do Deck History things !
    Those 2 formats mostly revolve around constructed magic !
    But the only MTG you play on the channel (nowadays) is Limited !
    That's quite funny, but oddly fitting with you having an historian background (iirc) !

    I think you were too hard on battle cry… it’s bad but definitely not #1 worst. Untapping all your white creatures sounds very powerful in the right scenario or deck

    Battle Cry shouldn't be here, it should be in an underrated white cards in EDH list.
    It's not "just" a combat trick, it untaps Mother of Runes (3? versions now), Mikaeus, Witch Hunter, Tempest's Orim, the ramping Wayfarer, you have a lot of uses with Battle Cry than just block, on which part Jason Barry in their comment covered perfectly.

    • @NizzahonMagic
      @NizzahonMagic  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are four two mana White cards that untap ALL of your creatures + some other effect, not just the White ones, so it is pretty obsolete.
      Is it better than deserving to be at #1? Maybe. But there's still no reason to use it, and it isn't underrated.

    • @orshefer1467
      @orshefer1467 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NizzahonMagic Battle Cry was overpowered already in Alliances by Energy Arc, I'm well aware. Tims, Witch Hunter, Mana makers, lots of fun. But that's my point - the combat trick is the bonus aspect in Battle Cry. You don't compare it with the Shield Walls, but with untappers.
      I think 65 decks is underrated, maybe that's where it should be. I do accept that I might be biased towards my own beginnings :)

    Aleatory didnt make this list...
    This is gonna be interesting
    R1, instant, play only after blockers are declared. Flip a coin. If you win the flip, target creature gets +1 / +1 until end of turn. Draw a card at the beginning of your next upkeep

    • @NizzahonMagic
      @NizzahonMagic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fact that you draw a card off of it keeps it from being a complete disaster.

      @@NizzahonMagic I see.. you're right. At least you still get something out of it... I just wish it just gave that +1/+1 boost no questions asked. I wonder why they thought they needed to make it a 50% chance. Even back then, this was highly underpowered and you would rather sleeve in an Incinerate or a better burn spell at that mana cost.
      Also, I found out the HARD way that Wicked Reward could not sacrifice multiple creatures... LMAO a judge got called over while we were in the middle of the game and it was a "moon or bust" scenario. I needed to deal 10 damage. I had a 2/1 creature that got in for damage, and I thought I could sac my 2 other attacking creatures but... nope... so I lost in the backswing TwT
