If you have not got out to see the exposed shipwreck at the White Lake channel pier, there is still time to do so and take in a bit of history at the White River Light Station while it is still exposed.
There was a storm in early October 1882 and reports that the Contest came up onto the beach trying to get into the White Lake channel. There were no lives lost. The lighthouse was right there at the mouth of the channel so the crew members probably stepped off onto dry ground and took shelter in the lighthouse. They reported that the ship was a total loss however.

It's interesting you think about erosion, you can see how much has changed since google maps update was done. Then realize the ship was Under all of that, so it shows more of it comes and goes over the years
