      So.......she's not Amazing?? Let me propose this....I love Barbra Striesand...her voice is sublime but given the choice between her and Judy??? I would take Judy every time. Judy was treated horribly by the studio and her mom but the reason I love Judy better is you can hear every hurt and emotion in her voice. Would she habe had that had she not gone through her insecurities??? And BTW she never saw herself that way. She was a survivor for as long as she could. But more amazin??? How much more amazing does she have to be to be AMAZING!!! ( which she already is)

    • @donnagutierrez5740
      @donnagutierrez5740 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@armpitification The best thing about Judy later music especially during her shows on stage was that as fragile as she was every bit of her soul was in there. The emotions were in every word. You believed what she was singing. And that never left her. Not ever.

    She loved her art so much, and was constantly looking for someone to love her back throughout her life. Ray Bolger said upon her passing that “she just plain wore out”. So many people saw her struggle and tried their best to help. Gene Kelly, who co-starred with Judy in “The Pirate”, often switched around the shooting schedule in order to accommodate the days when she wouldn’t make it onto the set due to her addiction issues. He said “I don’t care how long we have to wait”, he wasn’t giving up on her. It was his patience that helped her finish the film.
    I hope Judy is at peace now.

    • @firenze5555
      @firenze5555 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      How nice that Gene Kelly was good to Garland; he was awful to the teenager Debbie Reynolds in the making of Singin' in the Rain (and he was 39 years old at the time).

    • @groovymovie3213
      @groovymovie3213 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      firenze55 yeah, I don’t think anyone informed her that Gene was actually going to full on kiss her, which was definitely not cool. Poor thing. Thankfully he did come to her and apologize and they did a much tamer kiss after that, but Debbie was justifiably freaked out.

    • @rebekahlee9666
      @rebekahlee9666 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Gene Kelly's friendship with her is so sweet. He was tough choreographer, and he was hard on people, including himself. But he consistently went out of his way for Judy and kept working with her over and over. I think he saw how hard she tried to be great and how talented she really was. He knew she was worth it. Bless him for that.

      How did they "ruin" her. We are still celebrating her. I am no fan of how she was treated by the studio system and her mom but a) no one knew the devastating effects of the drugs she was given. If prescribed by a Dr. It must be okay and B ) Judy hated people feeling sorry for her. Yes she was fragile near the end but she never saw herself that way. Her kids all say she was scrappy and a survivor and great fun. They accept she had the disease of addiction but that did not take anything away from her talent. Ruined.....hardly..shortened ...definately and sad ....in a way...in hindsight..but boy what a dame and what a talent.

    Judy was a beautiful woman and a musical genius. The motion picture studio industry and Judy’s mother ruined this fine woman and caused her early death. I love her beautiful voice. Unlike many of today’s female singers, she doesn’t rely on overwrought melisma or downright screeching. Hers was comforting, warm, emotional and so impressive. Such a tragedy.

    Judy passed away before I was even born but strangely I felt like I've known her. One of her good friends and colleagues was Mel Torme. Mel is considered one of the greatest Jazz singers of all time and was also Judy's music director for her show. One of Mel's good friends and fellow musician is my jazz piano teacher Bobby Schiff. Bobby is considered one of the last few great jazz pianist that has worked and played with legends that have long passed away. In other words, Judy and I have mutual friends. :) Hearing Bobby's stories of Mel and other great Jazzers, I've felt like I was able to get a first person glance into that era of music and Hollywood. Rest in Peace Judy, you left us too soon.

    MASSIVE Judy Garland fan here . Have always been a fan but it wasn't really until I got Meet Me In St Louis for Christmas one year that it reached the massive point. (Even though I had gotten a Judy Garland book biography the year before). Visited her hometown twice in Minnesota and three years ago was lucky enough to be able to visit where she was interred just outside of NYC (I believe she has recently been moved to California). Obviously, was pretty much on top of all of these points for the most part, but somehow I don't ever recall seeing the other footage from the Man that Got Away, so I'm incredibly grateful for that!

    You can't list The Wizard of Oz as the start of her battle with addiction, when her mother was giving her prescriptions before she was in her double digits. Which you did state in your video. Although the reality is She was struggling before she even knew what that term meant. Filming The Wizard of Oz may have been when she realized that what she was being told to do was wrong, and couldn't stop without help, but it wasn't the start.

    She is such an iconic figure in Hollywood. Its heartbreaking to know how much she suffered & struggled because of her own mother & the MGM bosses. She deserved to be treated better than she was. Her mom was probably one of the first momagers, long before Hollywood knew the term. Her mother only saw her as a talent commodity not as a daughter & that's saddening. I think that's why she tried so hard to be a great mother to her girls.

    I hate what her mother and the studios did to her. Amphetamines in the mornings to wake her up and give her energy. Then barbiturates to help her sleep. And that ridiculous diet she was on when Oz was filming. Chicken broth, a piece of lettuce, coffee and 2 or 3 packs of cigarettes to tame her hunger. And there were studio spies following her around and if she ate anything that wasn’t on her diet, they’d let the studio know.

Just visited her hometown museum for the third time last week (and walked away with a stuffed toto in a basket who was just BEGGING me to buy him) I was there as long as I could muster (knowing I had another hour and a half to drive to be somewhere else on time and try and get food on the way) . Only $10 to tour the museum and spent as much time in there as possible. a MUST see if you're in the northern minnesota area.
