That generation built the respect and strength some in the United States now believe was God given. It was paid with sacrifice and blood of the brave and the honorable. Those men and women were neither suckers nor losers. Heroes, every single one of them.

Paw survived the march over the Owen Stanley Mountains as a member of the Red Arrow Division. MacArthur replaced their commanding general, and the replacement general dressed down the survivors of the march as a disgrace (because of their appearance) as they were forced to stand at attention in the rain, in clothes rotting on their backs - bodies racked with malaria, dysentery, and malnutrition. They then took Buna.
When Paw woke up in Australia, a nurse said it was a miracle he was alive given his high fever. He weighed less than 100 lbs. Upon recovery he was deployed and participated in more campaigns. He was eventually notified he had accumulated enough points to go home while on the front in the Philippines. He was by then a Staff Sargent, and offered a field commission. He declined, and came home, becoming a loving husband and father. He kept in touch with fellow Michigan Red Arrow Division brothers, and attended reunions until his passing at 87 in 2005. ❤

The Battle of Buna-Gona and the Western New Guinea campaign was in 1942. They cartwheeled from village to village along the North of the big island and also cleared other islands. This was with huge forces from Australia with fewer Americans. This ran parallel with the US Solomon Islands and Caroline islands. They were in or preparing for the Philippines by ‘44. Unfortunately, because New Guinea was primarily an Aussie campaign, here in the US, we never even studied this Campaign. Since I’ve learned about the Kokoda trail, Buna-Gona and this entire part of the war, my respect for the Aussies who fought in this has become great. After Burma-which was absolutely the worst and hardest fighting in the entire war but I think New Guinea was 2nd! The diseases, weather and terrain was horrible! Thanks for covering one of these heroes-often the unsung heroes!

Odd that he wasn't treated, as Chloroquine was introduced toward the end of WWII and was curative at the time (it only works on a few varieties today). Primaquine being the primary drug before the German Chloroquine was introduced, captured and reverse engineered being only a palliative for the most part - save in combination with Chloroquine.
The current gold standard being a drug derived from an ancient herbal medicine, albeit purified and a touch more effective.

The Philippine jungles were definitely no joke. During the Vietnam War, US Navy ships routinely pulled in for maintenance at U.S. Naval Base Subic Bay on the island of Luzon, in the Philippines. When my ship came in for repairs, I walked around the fence line in one part of the base and stopped to look past the fence. The jungle was right up against the fence and when i tried to see back into the foliage, in some spots I could look maybe 4'-5' or a little more occasionally. It was literally a wall of green. I was thinking of the troops that were there in WWII, knowing that the enemy could be nearly anywhere you looked, but you could see nothing through the jungle. You usually get used to the conditions with time, in an unfamiliar environment. In those conditions, that would scare the crap out of any sane person, knowing you just had to deal with it. I walked back to my ship with a huge respect for a bunch of guys that were probably 18 to maybe 25 years old and just had to "suck it up" and take care of business... and keep your head on a swivel... always!!

@@ret7armyantimalarial resistance has been increasing, with some varieties becoming completely immune to the combination or individual doses and requiring Artemisinin and its derivatives (and now growing resistant to that).
We took chloroquine and doxycycline as preventative. Hopefully soon, they'll have that vaccine they've been promising.
Halofantrine is also used in highly resistant cases, it was developed at Wally Reed and has had good results, even if they don't yet understand how it works. Clindamycin is decent, but extremely slow in clearing infections.
Research is ongoing, my money's on another plant derived drug, largely because plants are just so nasty fighters and sneaky. ;)

I agree 100%. Medal of Honor recipients deserve way more money and benefits than currently provided. They do receive the honor of being allowed to wear their full uniform for the rest of their lives, get "preferred status" free flights on military planes for life, and I believe unrestricted access to most military facilities as well as invitations to every presidential election ceremony. (I wonder how many actually attend though) The only thing I think they truly desire though, is the respect and admiration of their fellow soldiers. More than one high ranking General have been witnessed to stand at attention and salute Medal of Honor recipients in their presence even if they happen to hold the lowest ranks. I would assume that active duty MOH recipients get "unofficial" special treatment that we civilians just aren't privy to...At least I hope so. 🇺🇲

Different music than I’ve been hearing recently. (I watch several DSO clips a day.) As an electronic composer myself I pay special attention to the soundtrack.
The whispering vocalizations are both evocative and even a bit frightening. The pianos with the sustained reverberation seem as cold as outer space-which is, of course, entirely appropriate.

We are lucky to be citizens of the nation with hands down the most powerful military the world has ever seen. It must be a strange feeling to enter a war and be uncertain of its outcome. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor so many took it personal and signed up. Many didn't come home. But they all did their best to make sure our way of freedom and democracy won in the end. Those men and women did it for everyone else. They fought for the entire country and none of them had the me first attitude that seems to plague us today.

My Grandfather fought in the Philippines after Dugout Doug made his escape. He fought until forced to spike his unit's guns to prevent their use by the Japanese. He then fought alongside the Filipino resistance until Doug decided to drop by. He was then sent back to the states arriving only a day after the letter he had mailed my Grandmother arrived.
Upon returning to the recruiting depot as ordered after 30 days leave he was given a set of keys to an army tractor trailer combo hauling nitroglycerin from Ft Smith to armament plants in California. He wasn't awarded anything by the U.S. Army while alive yet had three medals from the Philipine government. He was finally advanced in paygrade to Staff Sgt and awarded several medals from the U.S. two years after his death. Grandpa hated two things til his death. Anything Japanese and the mere mention of Mac Arthur's name.

The problem with plan Orange was that MacArthur didnt follow it because he thought he knew best, he went back to enacting it in the final days and weeks but it was too late, its insane we celebrate him as a hero. He was at best a General that got lucky a few times and was in the right place at the right time. Heck, he was told not to go anywhere near the Yellow river in North Korea n the Korean war.... we had all but won that war until his ego got the better of him pushing too close to the Chinese causing their intervention. He is personally responsible for the unneeded deaths of 10s of thousands of soldiers.

Japanese tanks were not exactly formidable fighting machines. You could actually disable one with a water canteen. There was a technique where you could lodge the turret stuck by jamming the canteen under the turret.

Remember when we were not all victims? Remember when we used to have respect for our fellow mankind? How was it that the children of the greatest generation instilled absolutely nothing into their children? And that nothing was sadly better than what that generation instilled; take no responsibility, everyone gets a trophy, and you are and always will be a victim because its always someone else's fault.

The Japanese learned all they needed to know about 'modern warfare' from the US campaign of genocide in the Philippines, (fresh off their successful campaign of genocide against North American Indians), and assumed it was acceptable first world military practice.
