I finally opened the regular Green River yesterday with my Poker at the Pool group and that's a good pour! I have the Wheater, which I may open today for the 4th. I've heard so many good things about the full proof, I can't wait to try it!

On what you were saying, I'm with you, it's not about proof, but flavor. Proof/alcohol can mask or ruin good flavors. Proof does not bring flavors.
Think people just confuse it, because typically, most whiskey that has no water added (barrel proof) is higher in proof. Though that is not always true. So they associate higher proof with higher flavor when it's really, NO WATER Added = bolder flavor.
Ex, Wild Turkey has a barrel proof bottle that is below 90P. (~89P). I would rather have that barrel proof bottle at 89P, than a 107P whiskey that was watered down from 155P..
Not to mention the fed & state excise taxes are only on the alcohol, so lot more taxes per mL on higher proof stuff. In MA it's $35.20 per gallon combined & it's higher in 35 states & DC + sales tax on all that.

@@motohead077 I totally agree… took me a bit to find the ones that have the great flavor at the lower proof… but now that I have it is nice to have that long finish that is all flavor and not mostly heat

@@lesscashmoremash there isn't many anymore at lower proof because the legal max barrel entry proof was raised from 110 to 125. When it was 110, most chose to barrel at 100, so imagine how good whiskey was back then. Now, almost everyone barrels at 125. Also, none of that has to be published by the distillery. So it's gonna be almost impossible to get that law changed back. The feds like it, because they collect more tax per barrel & the distilleries like it because they get to add water to the bottles and call it Whiskey

@@motohead077 I hear that… only one off the top of my head that I think I remember still does is Makers Mark… think they still do the lower entry proof… maybe why the carry so much flavor at the 110 cask strength proof..

@@lesscashmoremash oh, nice. not sure what MM barrels at, but would make sense that it's lower than 125 if their barrel proof stuff is ~115. They rotate barrels, so most are probably close in proof. Doing that eliminates having a single barrel program though.. WT raised the barrel entry proof twice since 2004. It's now at 115.. Heard someone say Michters barrels at 104, but they are not even a distillery. They just source barrels & maybe blend & bottle.

Hah, just wrote about that liquor tax in the U.S. The fed liquor tax is $27 on a gallon of alcohol & each state adds it's own excise tax & almost all add sales tax to all of it. They tax the tax! Beer & wine is taxed at a lower rate.
