      The Mexico game will be way more open & will suit the US better than when they have to try to break a low block. Dest will be back, which will change things as well. Low block or not, Balogun should only be on the field if the plan is to get him the ball through the middle. That means always having Gio on the field at the same time, or possibly having McKennie further up to play him in. If GGG wants to just keep sending in crosses, he has two other 9s here and 2 or 3 more not in this camp who are way better for that.

    The first decent take on the Jamaican goal, Scally was put in a no win situation. Where were the centerbacks on that goal, Scally moved to center to cover for them. He did well to even get to the back post and no is out jumping a guy with a 5 yard run, when they are flat footed. Plus an international level keeper stops the shot

      The ball goes to the far post, his job is to man the far post. He watches his mark move to top of box and fails to mark the man running into the box. It’s called zonal marking. He sees the run late and doesn’t put a body on the guy. It was an excellent set piece and it’s set up to beat the man at the far post. Center backs did their job, Jesse

    Same, same. The same thing that has happened for 5 years under GGG and will continue to happen vs lesser opponents. Everyone knew exactly what Jamaica would do and this team continues to pound its head against the wall side passing outside the box, lobbing hopeful crosses to no one. Beyond me why when opportunities present themselves, Jamaica turns over the ball, we don't bust the other way before they are settled??? Nope, settle for basic possession, predictable pattern of play... side, back passes, walk it up. In a region we see it all the time, there's been ZERO progression in this aspect of our game for years. That is managing.

    After watching all of AC Milan's games Pulisic is used to playing with top class technical players like Reinders, Bennacer, Lotus-Cheek, Leao, Giraud and Theo Hernandez, who can all combine well with quick creative passes, one-twos etc.
    Last night it was clear to see in the first half that his teammates didn't have that ability whatsoever. Even Westin hardly made any quick combinations with Christian.
    It was all too slow and pedestrian so that when the pass would reach Pulisic it was already read by the Jamaicans, who double teamed him.
    Pulisic gets criticized by "trying to do too much", so often. However, like Jesse said : I am glad he did try to get something together, because some teammates could not even get easy passes on target and were too scared to play a creative pass.
    Only Gio really has that capability on par with Christian and Pulisic needs Gio as a 10 so badly!!

    • @user-gy1pu3gq3d
      @user-gy1pu3gq3d 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    It was a frustrating watch to be fair, a Jamaican second team were able to completely shut down any semblance of attack for 90 plus minutes. A lucky bounce kept us a float. While of course I am happy that we were able to come out on top in Extra Time, we should not allow that win to hide our seemingly continual lack of goal scoring. With the talent we have up front on this US team, something needs to change tactically.

    • @patrick4662

    • @LJ_S1K

      I think fans underestimate how difficult it is to breakdown a low block with athletic players like Jamaica. Even without Jamaicas best players it doesn’t matter because the strategy they used is not meant for skilled players it’s meant to absorb pressure and disrupt play with small fouls and then maybe catch the other team on a break.

    • @taucross1157
      @taucross1157 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LJ_S1K In no way am I trying to portend that Jamaica did not play well, I thought they played exceptionally well. The low block, is of course difficult to break down, hence why it is so widely used to mitigate against attacking expression on the pitch. With that said though, the US team lacked imagination and creativity for much of the game. Yes, this is something that Gio brought to the game when he was subbed on, but my point remains the same. This is a game that should be won easily with the talent gap between the two sides, and frankly it should not matter if Jamaica plays a low block or not. The team should have prepared tactical solutions to penetrate a low block, and they appeared to be out of their depth for 90 minutes.

    • @LJ_S1K
      @LJ_S1K 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@taucross1157 I agree and disagree. I think tactically the USA had ideas, but the players on the pitch couldn’t execute. So many simple passes were under hit or off their mark especially in first half. The defensive mistake in the beginning that led to Jamaica’s goal was the worse thing that could have happened. As you know once a team that plays in a low block gets a lead they are even more difficult to break down because now they do not even need to look for a counter they will just stay compact and hold for the 1-0 win. Once the US subbed in Gio and Tyler in the midfield things improved a lot. Once the US tied Jamaica was done because now Jamaica had to either play for the tie and stay compact or get out of their defensive shape to try and win. By extra time we all saw that USA were the better team.

    • @taucross1157
      @taucross1157 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LJ_S1K Appreciate the back and forth. I do agree with pretty much everything you are stating, and the early goal did make it much easier for Jamaica to “kill the game” so to speak. I guess what it all comes down to is expectations. I simply expect more from the resources and players we have available than what they showed last night. It is just tough for me to accept that an early goal concession and an opponents low block system excuse the performance we all witnessed. It just felt like the US were searching for answers, and against a team we should be handling easily in almost all circumstances, is very concerning.

      Jesse is the same breed of systems guy Greg is. Press, press, press. Gio wouldn’t fit. He’s a tactical dunce. His rah rah and blathering gets tiring. BJ put good combinations on the field and training obviously was about getting them to find a team flow. Who are our best guys, what makes them good, how can we get them to gel. You can see what a team works on when you watch them play. I’m not sure what GGG works on but getting guys to move and combine doesn’t seem to be a priority.

    For me, it looked like we were seeing a manager who never once contemplated, “Ok. How will we approach conceding an early goal?”. He has proven himself, time it again, to be a one track mind, bereft of creativity and tactical flexibility until absolutely positively forced to try something different. His coaching style is 75 seconds of missionary position, no eye contact, and having never encountered it, a suspicious disbelief in the GGG-spot.

    “With me, if you’re trying these nifty balls in tight spaces (to break the low block), and even if you lose it, you can counter press. With a low block, this is as effective as the possession tactics because the opponent relaxes”
    Jesse, why didn’t this work at Leeds? Again, previous comment I made, Leeds got figured out so quickly because this was Jesse’s whole philosophy. Press/counter press. Okay, cool. What happens when said counter press is easy to unlock because you commit so many men to this press, all across the pitch, so there’s whole for a long diagonal to be played? This style of play works, when there’s cohesion to the press. In Jesse’s world, when we’re in possession against the low block, meaning we likely have at least 6, up to 8 men forward, most of the team will converge on the opponent. Literally, you could have someone on the opposite wing just run straight, and the player with the ball could hoof it up to them. Since we’re committing so many men forward, in possession, our tactical shape is all out of sorts, and you’re relying on your CBs to converge. Oh, wait, now the other winger makes a run on the opposite side, and the winger switches play back to him? 1v1.
    Again, Leeds got found out very quickly. And, it’s specifically because Jesse cannot see obvious flaws in his system, and refused to change.

    • @richp6366

      Excellent summary of what went wrong at Leeds - tectical inflexibility that was figured out quickly by opponents. Also, his teams did look halfway decent against bigger clubs that didn't bunker (Liverpool, Chelsea, Man U), but against teams that played a mid or low block his tactics were completely ineffective. So if Jesse did this with USMNT, we'd look great losing to Brazil 3-2, and look awful losing to Bolivia 1-0.

    • @jamesbaurus5928
      @jamesbaurus5928 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The issue at Leeds wasn't scoring goals it was the rest defense and the goalkeeper who exacerbated many of the problems with a narrow, direct, heavy press system. Admittedly getting Rasmus was a mistake by Jesse and that contributed to the problem.
      Narrow, direct, press dependent systems do work in the top 5 league in Europe, but Jessie didn't know how to adapt to a very poor defense which was constantly exposed by his tactics.
      Those issues wouldn't arise as much with the USMNT.
      The midfield and back 4 is much better than Leeds had at its disposal

    “You had things kinda freestyling and trying things all over the pitch. Timothy Weah on the left, Mckennie on the back line playing long balls, and you lose the overall structure of what the coach wanted.”
    Wow. Jesse, I mean this sincerely, have you ever heard of wingers swapping sides? Have you ever heard of midfielders dropping deeper to get the ball? These are tactics. I mean, Weah, bar none, has the best long shot ability in the entire US player pool. Having him swap to the left, so he can cut onto his right boot and shoot from distance, is absolutely a tactic. I am not privy to being on the sideline, so idk if GGG was calling for that. However, if GGG did call for that, and for Jesse to say it’s “Freestyling” or “Losing structure” is nuts.

      Surprised it was a 5-4-1 when they normally play a 4-4-2? Really??? They were missing 5 starters of which 3 were arguably their best 3 and you are surprised that they changed formation? Jesse, lay off the hooch.

    • @Phogadacbiet
      @Phogadacbiet 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@donnchadonny5133sure, he was asked about the manager perspective, but then he literally says, “Think about this if you’re the national team.” That’s an all encompassing statement. He very easily could have said, you’re a coaching staff, and you prepare months. He’s absolutely throwing out that GGG didn’t properly prep the players, which, again, they got here on Monday? Tuesday? How much prep are you actually expecting to have, regardless if the manager/staff had months to prep.

    • @donnchadonny5133
      @donnchadonny5133 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Q: how would you feel, on the coaching sideline, when the final whistle blew? Relieved, shocked, or proud?
      A: you feel all those emotions. You prepare months for these matches, are excited to get your team together, but then get punched right at the start and the performance isn’t what you would have hoped for and talked about in preparation. But then you have to adjust to win on the day. After the game, the staff should look back at the positives and what needs to improve.
      I’m paraphrasing above. On my reading, the answer he gives is from the coach’s perspective (not the players) and it really isn’t that controversial, but I get how you got lost. Ideally, he would have said “the coaching staff of the national team,” not just “the national team,” in that one sentence (but in live conversation you should expect imperfections). Context and reading comprehension solves the problem.
      The criticism that Jesse (and the USMNT) should not have been surprised by Jamaica’s 5-4-1 is valid, but I still think this criticism is just not listening well.
      Also he basically just says “you feel all of the listed emotions, and will need to go back and examine the positives and the negatives” with a lot more words. I don’t see him throwing anyone under the bus in this answer, the more substantial remarks come later (like talking about Tillman, Adams, Gio, and the improvements in performance levels and organization as subs came on).
