  • On the top of a hill in Sheffield is and ancient monument where an iron aged Celtic tribe called the Brigantes once lived.
The only reminants of the fort today are its ramparts made of stone and earth which once would have been fortified with a wooden palisade.
The fort itself is along side another ancient monument that would have stretched for many miles, known as the Roman rigs which is said to be a dyke/earthworks that looks to have linked the many settlements that are linear to the fort at Wincobank and possibly even be a defensive line to keep back the invading Romans from the period.
The hill is a coppiced ancient woodland full of walking trails and I hope you get the chance to wander the area if your ever in this neck of the woods (pardon the pun).
