@@chappyvevo. yea but controlled rocket riding is something i haven't seen implemented in a game before (with the exception of fortnite guided missile from season 5, which needed to do some tricks to actually work for a few secs then kill yourself)

13:55 - The game will damage you when whiplashing a rocket towards you (when travelling up) because it thinks you're eligible for FUP and will cause a super explosion instead of letting you rocket-ride. However, to rocket-ride, you will need to jump on the rocket, and to do that, you'll need to be falling on the rocket. This is how the game thinks that: "Okay, this player is travelling up." = "I need to cause a super explosion." "Okay, this player is travelling down." = "I need to let the player rocket-ride." It's going to be tiring to COMPLETELY analyze the rocket-ride, but to summarize: Rockets got a collision on top of them that will activate as a seat for the player when meeting certain conditions (Falling towards the top of the rocket, freezed or not). Upon reaching these conditions, the rocket will change the player's movement as it is intended, AKA rocket-riding controls. Video's great, and I learned new tricks from it. It'd been great if it was released sooner, but I can't complain; it's already out anyway.
For anyone looking for advice, in the latest patch you no longer need to be considered falling while using whiplash to rocket ride. Should make it a lot easier to get started on this awesome tech
As per me, Filth chases you like Scout, we got Rocket Launcher from Soldier, Streetcleaner as Pyro, SRS as Demoman's Loose Cannon (and coins and core ejects as projectiles following trajectory), Gutterman as Heavy, Sentry as Engineer's Sentry (with the precision, just need some rockets on them lol), Screwdriver as Ubergun (continuous heal), Drones (and also other ranged enemies) as snipers who mostly don't predict your movement tho, nothing like spy in the entire game ig, but we have that 1-3 skip where we use electric railcannon to electrocute that box (like sapper)

Thanks a lot for your rocketride tutorial. I had a hard time understanding it even with other tutorials but you explain it so well that I finally was able to learn it. Generally I love how detailed your guides are.
I’ve definitely found myself struggling to incorporate the rocket launcher into my arsenal, it’s mostly just “Anti-Cerberus-Cannon” for me. This video should definitely help me flow with it better!
This was well before violence released - by yes! It is important. I'll make an update down the line, but I want to wait a bit longer just in case things get changed again in a hotfix.
There was a time where I was so bad at using the rocket launcher I just unequipped it from my loadout. Now I am trying to learn it beacause it is honestly super fun to use. This vid could not have come act a better time, thanks Herb!
I was lured in with the weapon's cool rustic design, but I didn't think much of it besides rocket surfing and cool air explosions I was definitely NOT prepared for the whole new world this video was going to open up for me
if you activate the freeze frame, look straight up, shoot two rockets without moving, and jump on top of the top rocket when the freeze frame deactivates the rocket you're riding on will be pushed up by a rocket that doesn't lose speed/fall down like the rocket you are riding allowing for greater and greater hight.
Great video, however one thing I would have added is a tech where you whiplash a light enemy and shoot a rocket immediately after at said enemy, creating a red explosion on command. Overall really good video tho.
in cybergrind its a really good tech since the projectile shooting husks stay far, allowing you to chain multiple red explosions to enemies that are closer to you. or even combo the grenade red explosion then whipping an enemy and blow a second explosion since rockets wont fly away while the previous red explosion lingers unlike the shotgun boost or grenade
One thing you missed with rocket jumping is what I like to call the super rocket jump, Simply look at the ground then do a dash jump and rocket jump at the same time you get a lot more distance than a normal dash jump!
The day after I watched this I had a dream that I was in the sandbox figuring out how to rocket ride. This was before I actually played and practiced what you taught. This is the first dream I've remembered in like 2 months. Take that how you will.

Dear H. Messiah I have reasently returned to class beacause i have been stuggeling in P-ranking and i realised that this clas exists, now i am finaly having good grades, so thanks a lot.
great ultraguide as always! tiny nitpick but just wanted you to know at 4:00 the 4-1 wr uses "godrocket", so freezing the rockets close to ground and whiplashing them then for a huge boost (it's really fast in the clip so you can only spot it with slowdown), so it's not exactly a rocket boost like the one you were showing beforehand and could be a bit confusing. Afaik it's considered a bug but idk if hakita will be patching it, nontheless great stuff, learned a lot myself from this so keep it up! :)
18:48 Another way to ball boost is to hold right click and then press left click and punch at the same time. I recommend using this method over the right click tap method as it uses almost identical inputs to classic shotgun projectile boosting, and thus uses the same muscle memory
while it was mentioned that a frozen rocket does have a bigger explosion radius, its important to note that it give wall jumps and sliding rocket jumps much more powerful. also freezing rockets in the path of street cleaners causes them to still explode, useful in the boring hallway in p2. i learned a lot more from my favorite weapon in the game, thank you for making such an in-depth and high quality video.
New tech just dropped. Hitting a freezeframe rocket in the air with the Malicious railcannon (the rocket has to be frozen for 2 seconds) makes the GIGA NUKE. It makes the old Core Eject Nuke looks like a joke.
Mastering the Rocket Launcher was the best decision i made back then. Goodluck to all learning this i believe in you!. And also, great video Herb, miss watching the guide videos you make:)
a great combo that I found out for myself somewhat recently is lightly tapping a light enemy with whip and then quickly shooting a rocket at them. this unsures a red explosion since the game thinks the enemy was airborne at the moment the rocket hit and a lot of style, and can also help dealing with soldiers more efficiently, if you don't want to use say, an alt piercer primary fire. and it can also help to deal with groups of enemies if you don't want to nuke them but still get a lot of style, or if your railcannon is on a recharge
I usually like to do the whiplash - rocket combo, which can be used to trigger red explosions: simply whiplash the farthest husk like strays or soldiers (only not stalkers nor streetcleaners) , and shoot with the primary fire when it reaches a cluster of enemies. It deflects a lot of projectiles too and will kill most of the other husks so it's another great way to rise style
update please: rockets frozen for 1 second will gain blue stripes and cause super explosion even while hitting ground enemy freeze guttertank rocket, explain 'round trip' style bonus you cannot dismount rockets while paused anymore
Non-snipe methods of triggering the explosion still trigger a red explosion if the rocket is charged, by the way! I know this includes magnets, but don't know if dropping coins on a charged rocket causes a red explosion or not
One thing you missed about rockets, you can shoot coins with rockets for some reason. This dead-coin’s the coin you shot however, but if other coins are nearby it, you can you the blast from the rocket to knock the other coins even higher into the air, leading to more split shots.
If you whiplash a light enemy thay count as if thay were airborne, which allows for a vary easy and fast red expllosion if you quickly fire a rocket after whiplashing a light enemy
As a somewhat professional tf2 rocket jumper, rocket jumps are seemingly easy! But I dont have the full version of ultrakill. Also you played rocket jump waltz for the rocket jumping part, so yeah.
Before the cybergrind upgrade, I was struggling to make it past the early 20s. Forced myself to learn rocketriding by exclusively using it in the cybergrind to really corner myself. Almost made it to the 60s. Post cybergrind update, I had been on a hiatus from the game and kinda forgot how essential of a tool rocket riding was, and yesterday I was dying at exactly wave 33. Suddenly remember that rocket riding is a thing, and made it to 40 on my next attempt. It would actually be a decent challenge to NOT rocket ride and make it to your pb in cybergrind.
fun fact: while slamming shoot two rockets then whiplash one, one of the rockets will push the other one up until the rockets despawn which allows you to recreate the troll magnet car.
Now im imagining soldier running into v1 laughing like a maniac as he has his rocket launcher and hell is unable to kill him no matter how hard it tries
here are 2 tricks that i think you should have mentioned: grabbing a light / fodder enemy with the whiplash and hitting them with a rocket while they are grappeled counts as mid air, and does a super explosion, its pretty easy to execute and can wipe multiple enemies and severely damage cerberi that are caught in the blast. you can hit streetcleaners with a rocket simply by whiplashing the rocket into them, also whiplashing a rocket gives it a bigger hitbox, since whiplash snaps to enemies when they are close enough.
You can also pull off a super explosion while reeling in an enemy with the whiplash, as soon as the whiplash connects the enemy is considered airborne allowing you to just nuke things very quickly
One thing I accidentally found out with the rocket is that you can basically get a free large explosion if you hit any small guy you can whiplash to you mid pull, most notably the soldiers because you can time it right to blow them up on the spot and ignore their rocket defense.
There is a cheeky goblin tech I found that I call rocketbaiting Maurices usually shoot you only with projectiles when you are far away, but you can get above them by slamstoring or rocketriding, then start rocketriding and jump off as soon as you hear maurice chargeup sound and throw a coin below you. if there are several maurices, you can hit multiple chargebacks in quick succsession Very easy chargeback, useful when you have Maurice overpopulation or for bombing mindflayers and fodder
I know this may sound obvious to most but just in case, you can perform a slam on top of a rocket to get onto it a bit quicker if the basic jumping method is all you can manage at first Also while not as seamless as Insta-riding, you can rocket ride in any direction you want by just freezing, fire a rocket, jump and slam then finally unfreeze. Might not be as cool looking but you can lose a fair amount of distance having to constantly reangle every Insta-rocket especially if the direction you wanna go is up
I started watching herb’s guides when I first got the game. Now I have P-Ranked Sisyphus. I hope to give back to him someday by discovering a useless niche tech for a future weapon variant that he will be forced to mention.
a little tip for scrubs like me who use whiplash as their primary rocket riding method - to ensure that you can use the tech at any given moment just dash before performing it. Dash resets your velocity immediately and sets you into "falling" state which is needed for the tech to work
fun fact: you can kill a hideaus mass by shooting a cannonball on its belly, throwing a coin, hitting the coin with a railconnon and doing everything fast. The cannonball will bounce up out of the railcannons range so you can hit the coin. The coin will then reflect the railconnen hit back to the cannonball wich will insta-kill it. Saw this in a video once.

if you shoot 2 rockets right into each other they will stay in place, so if u do this vertically you can make a trap thats lasts for about 30 seconds and deals the damage of 2 rockets. You can use the knuckleblaster to launch enemies into the trap, due to them being airborne they will take massive damage (2 red explosions). also if you ride the top rocket it will slowly go up and eventually freeze in place, making a sort of platform u can use to attack enemies from a height without moving. Extremely useless but really fun. edit: You can even edit how tall the trap is so that only enemies like swordmachines and cerberus can step into it, while avoiding the shorter enemies like strays and schisms. Also it kills cerberus in just 2 traps which you have enough time to make in the 5 seconds of time stop that u have. As for swordmachines 2 traps and a single pistol bullet will drop it to phase 2 so u can easily shotgun swap it, sentries die in just a single airborne explosion.
a wacky thing you can do with the magnet is sticking it to a tanky enemy, keep rockets frozen while shooting. depending on where the rockets are and if the target is not moving the moment you unfreeze, all rockets should connect cuz when the magnet breaks, the remaining rockets will stay close enough to almost not miss after losing attraction. useful if you stick it to the insurrectionionist and wait till he jumps for that red explosion
dont forget that you can also do a super duper easy red explosion with the rocket launcher by hooking a light enemy then shooting a rocket which would cause an instant red explosion. do note that you have to hook first, then shoot otherwise you'll hit yourself with the rocket
The fact that you can actually ride the rocket is still so unbelievable to me, like thats something you only see in animated cutscenes and stuff but you can actually just do that here

a little tip for scrubs like me who use whiplash as their primary rocket riding method - to ensure that you can use the tech at any given moment just dash before performing it.
Wow that Jay guy seems pretty smart and cool I'm sure he has a great profile too

holy cow weed jesus is back
if you shoot 2 rockets right into each other they will stay in place, so if u do this vertically you can make a trap thats lasts for about 30 seconds and deals the damage of 2 rockets.
O,MGW IOTS THJE UHH THE 1-4 PEEDRUN GUY
Remember, wiplashing a light enemy makes em airborn, do as you will
I love it when I pull a stray or soilder and shot a rocket at them to cause a super explosion right there.
nice dmc3 reference on the thumbnail
new herb boy just dropped, time to get 12% better at the game
dont forget that you can also do a super duper easy red explosion with the rocket launcher by hooking a light enemy then shooting a rocket which would cause an instant red explosion. do note that you have to hook first, then shoot otherwise you'll hit yourself with the rocket
P-2 on brutal making me study all weapon techs again like its a damn university course
