Thank you! Check this out: "I was trying to read* a book when suddenly I heard someone slam* the door." When we use "trying to," the base verb will follow. Also, when we use two verbs, the first one is conjugated (past tense = heard) and the second verb (base verb = slam) uses the base form.

Not much difference, but the emphasis is slightly different. "Was working" puts more emphasis on the action rather than the time.

"What did she do...?" is correct. The first verb in the question is conjugated, the second verb is the base verb.
