You folks are really doing a great job of promulgating *more* of the best information, as well as laying out exactly what it's like to work in this business. You've given me a lot of confidence that, even at my age, I can get back out there and DO THIS. And based on my own experiences, much of what you say really rings true to me.
I was first licensed pretty much straight outta high school not far from you back in 1982, and after working in the business a few years I had kids, etc, and let my license lapse for decades. I never thought I would have a need to use my skill until now so I'm working to find a school that I can either afford or that will take grant monies.
The way I saw a lot of things being done back when I was working the trade could be described as shady. Back then you had to order a special yellow pages from Ma Bell to find business listings. And if your shop owner/employer was paying you illegally, you had to contact the IRS, state, or go to the library to try to find out the best information. NOW we have practically instant access to information, and at a volume we couldn't have imagined back then.
With specific regard to the commission/employee/hourly thing here in California, as I understand it, commission still means that an hourly wage must be paid (here in California) *if* the commission earned is less than what the hourly rate, let's use our statewide minimum of $11/hr here, is less than that amount. In other words, if there's a difference between commission and that wage, or whatever's agreed upon, the shop owner pays *that* difference. Does that make sense? So that the employee is still earning that wage, if not more.
My question is, am I understanding this aspect of our state's labor laws correctly, to the best of your knowledge?
Also, you guys crack me up! It's nice to see this kind of banter among coworkers.

This is again a very good topic.
I had a proposition .... : The lady propose me to work with her : use my own products + build her/us a clientele(found new clients) + help her to develop her business (found new marketinf ideas...) etc...and she takes around 30% and I take around 70%. But Honestly I didn't know if it was a good deal because the salon was not so "pretty", NOT SO CLEAN TOO as far as the materiel etc....AND I'm trying to build a clientèle for my own business at the same time. So I had this thought which was " If it's not just for experience and try new things, what am I really gain to go work with the lady ? "
Can you guys have the time to tell me what do you think about that?
If you have a place at your home to do nails, what the interest to go booth renting or commission?
I hope I explain myself well enought and thank you for this very intersting video

NailFix&Chill its a decision that really has to be up to you. In most states in home work stations aren’t usually state board regulated (not legal) unless you have met all the requirements of course. But like Tracey points out when it’s not your business you are not fully in charge, so I would say take your time thinking about it maybe weigh out your pros & cons & consider all your options.

@@youngnailsinc thank you so much for your answer .
Yes I work from home but I did everything I have to do legally to be allowed to do it 😊
Yess and I had the feeling that I would be in charge of things that I shouldn't have to do unless I don't have my business to develop or just don't want to have mine business at all.
But maybe I'm wrong and it's just normal 🙄.
The future will tell me if I made a mistake I supposed 😊...and I will learn from it , one way or another .

I started off booth renting, and then went to a commission salon. I agree with Tracy I like all my money but I do think that starting out you either need to do commission or have at least a part time job until you build up your clientele. But to each his own, if I had it to do over I would change a few things but I'd go the same path I took. Still not where I want to be, but I am successful.

You should do a talk about what is the responsibility of the shop owner to their employees. like with holding taxes and have liability insurance for them. the safe grades they by law are responsible for to there employees. because if your fresh out of school you don't have a clue about any of these things. Unfortunately there are some unfair Business practices performed out there. That is the reason for a labor commission, If needed. Please let Technicians out there know they shouldn't be taken Advantage of.

I would suggest wearing your work, getting sets on your friends, maybe offer 1ST time discounts to some of the hair clients in the salon since they are already in there. Definitely get some nails on those hair dressers even if its just gel manis that way they are exposed to all their clients

One aspect could be that some people require a more structured environment (commission) to be successful. Not everyone can function the best doing it on their own (booth rent). That's not to say they are not incredible nail artists. Not everyone works best in the same environment. It's good there are several options.

Hi! Thank you so much for such an informative video! My brother and I are thinking about renting out chairs at our nail salon but we're trying to figure out a few knots to move forward with this process. Should you charge a flat renting fee or a commission fee monthly? What do you do when you have new nail techs who don't have their own supplies yet? What's appropriate to charge for supplies usage? What about credit cards machine to cash out clients, do you charge a fee to use the machine or do you have renters have their own check out system?

    • @youngnailsinc
      @youngnailsinc  2 ปีที่แล้ว

When you are opening up your space to other techs, there are a lot of choices you need to make. There isn't one specific answer since you'll have to make these decisions based on what's best for your business. But here are some things to consider... If you are "renting" out space, the renter is an independent contractor. This means they should be able to come and go whenever they need to, provide the services they want and charge the prices they want. They will provide all of their own supplies/tools/etc and will be responsible for taking payments from their clients. All you do is collect rent payments from them and upkeep the salon space.
If you want to work on a commission basis, first check into your local legalities. Most of the time, when paying your technicians commission, they are still independent and can not be required to work specific hours unless they are compensated hourly wages. You will also need to keep track of booking and payments from clients so you can figure out commission payments to your technicians as well as withholding for taxes etc. You may consider contacting a tax professional for more info on this.
If your techs don't have all their own supplies and work on commission, you negotiate a lower commission paid to them if you provide things for them to use, such as products, towels, credit card machines/booking POS programs/etc. Renters who don't have their own booking/POS system could be charged a higher rent or a fee per transaction for using your system, but this would have to be determined in their contract up front.

It will be my 1 year anniversary in February as a booth renter and this past year has been a challenge. I wouldn't change it for anything. I needed a creative outlet and similar to what Tracey said, the salon owners won't spend the money on quality products or products that are new and trending. They are stuck in their ways or just don't care about the employees' opinions. I got so sick and tired and frustrated with the mess that I was dealing with and never really thought of booth renting at all in the my 10+ years in the business. I never thought I would be my own boss. It's weird to say the word boss for me. I just wanted to be able let my creative juices flow so this was my last resort and it has worked out. Clients come and go but with the amount of clients that have stuck by me and let me create, I will be forever grateful. I'm much more a dreamer now and I can't stop thinking about what's to come. Most importantly, I control my income. HIGH FIVE TRACEY!

As the salon owner it is kind of your call on what you do want to provide which can all be agreed upon via contract at the start of the work relationship. Keeping in mind that you are really setting the tone for your salon so if you put more in to the decor and vibes of the place you know you can have it your way. However as far as supplying everything you don't want to spread yourself too thin and become taken advantage of. I would say provide as much as you are comfortable with.

Every salon is going to be different in how they run their commission. Some salons will pay a lower commission but provide all of your products for you and some that will pay higher commission but you have to provide all of your supplies. Unfortunately when you are working on a straight commission based pay, if you don't have clients, you don't get paid. The legality of this varies depending on your employment status, so it's best to discuss this with your employer prior to accepting a job.
