If you don't look too closely, it looks like the table lines up and Greg is a giant.
An easier way is if you watch on a phone, and flip it so the video is at the top of the screen. It makes the clip lines in the different camera views less visible
I cant un-see
I'm a first time DM. My players survived the first Goblin ambush, with one of the players being injured, but healed herself with Cure Wounds. I had prepared myself in advance for the Cragmaw Hideout campaign line, but the adventurers went to Phandalin first to get their money. I was like, "Ah crap," beause I hadn't read any of that lol!
+Swash74 Happened to me too! I just winged it and said Barthen lent them horses but stayed with all their money using "you may die, let not your money go to waste" excuse. The Ruffians also had laid a curfew to town, so the players had to find somewhere to stay quickly or leave town. They chose to leave town and I could run the Hideout like planned hahaha
+Swash74 that is EXACTLY what i like to call rule of thumb 1 when DMing: If you give your players a solid stone bridge to cross they will walk 2 days down river, throw rope across the rapids, and attempt to ford the river via cross rope walking.
THE BRIDGE WAS RIGHT THERE...
always be prepared for the PCs
Improv is definitely a HUGE part of DM'ing...Being able to come up with something on the fly when your players inevitably veer of course...and they will...Don't discourage the "Off road" play though, sometimes it brings about interesting encounter chains and really fun gameplay!
My players wanted to do this too. I told them it would be very unlikely they would get paid if Barthen did not tell the people in Phandalin to pay them. He of course would have told them by going ahead, but if he didn't get there, they wouldnt know
I told them that he probably would give a higher reward if they would manage to rescue him than taking that cart there
I absolutely love the DM's fashion choice. Completely serious. Love it.
The last 10 minutes is why I've been playing d&d for 20 years. Great job, love 5e so far.
Just sayin, when I run this campaign for new players, I start the players at the stables outside Neverwinter where a old, gruff stable master offers to sell them each 1 health potion each. I do this to help immerse them into their characters, immediately having to interact with an NPC, barter, and purchase. It also gives a smooth intro of character scene. If none of them buy a potion, I have the stable master give them a couple potions as a helping hand to his old friend Gundren.
I also give the health potion/s in hopes to maybe discourage the party from resting after the first couple battles, as new players often panic after taking HP loss, wasting time resting (although, sometimes they do anyway, I don’t often say “no” to my players). That being said, unless they each buy a potions, I don’t give them all one in order to encourage teamwork, and again allow for immersion into the personality of their PC (would their dwarf really share their potion to help some self-righteous noble?). Just a tip for situations like in this playthrough where one PC is unconscious, and they all rest. Just a tip.
Running this game now with my wife and kids as a first time DM. Fun and interesting to see how different their game is playing out based on their characters decisions. I really like this edition so far because it does not overwhelm new D&D players. Great that combat is faster and does not bog down the roleplaying aspect of the game!
After watching part 1 can anyone confirm that everyone from part 2 is still with us? And if so congrats 👏
I'm preparing to try DMing for the first time in years by running this adventure and these videos are really helpful. Thanks for doing them. Can't wait for part 3!
I love the player archetypes represented in this group. You got: The Roleplaying star, the person who get there characters motivation and personality and turns it up to 11 when its time to roleplay. The Inexperienced but helpful one, the person that doesn't totally understand all the rules etc, but does his/her best to be useful to the group. The Total New Player: who tries there best to know the rules, their character, and roleplay (not easy to do), and you can see them learning as they go. And the last person is either The Helpful Veteran or the Well Read Newcomer. Someone who knows the rules, and does his/her best to help the newer players at the table with concepts they haven't mastered yet. IMO this is a great kind of person to have at the table from the DMs perspective as long as they don't take proxy-control of another players character. I'm really enjoying this Adventure, and find myself often thinking "not how I would have done that, but damn if that wasn't entertaining."
My first session ever was DMing this adventure and it's really cool watching this to see how different things turn out depending on the PCs. My players decided to have the elf Wizard (who spoke goblin) try to trick the goblins by using prestidigitation to make a small sack of fake gold in an attempt to talk with the Goblin Chief. He rolled really well on his checks and I figured Goblins are dumb so I allowed it meaning they got to skip the wolves and go right to the parley with the chief.
I really like how you put the character's names and classes underneath the players' names. Nice touch.
I felt a bit sorry for Liz for the first 30 minutes or so. Would've been more generous of Greg to not have the scout discover them before her character recovered, so she didn't have to sit out the first part of the game while her PC was KO'd. Great session, though, love the group!
Happy belated birthday, Greg!
Thanks for the public game, everyone!
I have watched a few other videos of groups playing this adventure and I must say this series is by far the most enjoyable and fun to watch. Keep it up! Part 3 please!
I too always wear a necktie when I DM.
"Weekend at Slurry's" classic
FYI there is no sound at the very beginning :) Give it until about :30
Noted!
Shane Plays you mean :27

Having just started playing this module with my friends, its cool seeing how different people react to these situations, and how the DM will change things up as the adventure goes :)
It seems that Greg is overlooking Josh's roleplaying, he's interpreting the character's Ideal really well, but Greg isn't giving him any Inspiration Points! And it's nice to see that the girls feel so comfortable in this session! Great group, kudos!!! Keep on with the videos (I still haven't got my Starter Set :/ )
Can one find their characters somewhere? I mean you seem to know that his character has certain traits, but I can't recall hearing about those in the videos :P Thx in advance! ^^
Michael Rasmussen I know the traits for the Wizard cause of the preview in their official facebook D&D page, Josh is interpreting the character's Traits, Ideals and Bonds perfectly!!! And, yeah...they didn't mention them previously, here's the link to the preview of the Wizard (to save your time searching for the sheet): fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/t1.0-9/q71/s720x720/10487461_10152486378946071_2306270024762689483_n.jpg
SaruvaViolin Thanks man, appreciate it :)
Well, Inspiration is up to the DM, but from what I understand it's most likely to be used when good roleplaying puts your character at a disadvantage. So, if your flaw is over-confidence and you're low on HP, the "I wanna win!" mentality would tell you to ask for the cleric's help, but a good RPer might even refuse healing at first. So in order to encourage RPing whether it helps your character or not, Inspiration kind of mechanically keeps you from being totally screwed over by rewarding you after disadvantaging yourself for the sake of good storytelling. At least, that's how I'll be using it!
We're aiming to have part 3 on this coming Monday, July 28. We skipped last week due to absences.
Sorry all, we're down two players, so going to have to kick it back another week.
Greg Bilsland This is very depressing. These videos alone are the sole reason I even purchased the intro set. I will continue to watch these and your old DM sessions to help better understand the wonderful world of D&D. Thanks for all the hard work you've all dedicated to this.
Greg Bilsland oh man...tell your players that thousands of people are anxiously awaiting their return.
still nothing
Yeah, more absences-Chris was out on jury duty and one of the Magic brand managers was tied up at a conference. Sorry for the delays!
This is really entertaining and helpful as I prep to DM. Thank you all!
Thank you for adding the names/roles this time! :-)
Clerics are not heal bots! Homegirl burned both her spell slots on healing for the party and still caught constant shit. Buddy on the left was pretty grating
Liz was doing awesome for her second game session ever. Chris was being a complete tool after his weak table talking flirts fell flat in session one. Chris is not welcome at my table.
When the DM smiles it's already too late
Happy belated birthday 🎂 Greg!!! Thanks for this playthorugh everyone involved!
A DM wearing a tie confuses me.
Well, a tie always favors the dm ;l
It's a magical Tie of DMing +3
With the way the multiple screens line up, it looks like Greg is a giant. Er... Goliath.
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons players seem to be very angry in the comment section, about how the folks in this "starter set" video role-played this game.
I like playing with experienced D&D DMs and players, because pissing them off and making nonsense of the game is the fun of it
just realised that there are three different cameras, I was wondering why the DM looked so large
LOL on the mimicking of goblin at the end
Just realised that the fastest way to wake up an unconscious character without using magic is to punch them so they start dying and hope they roll a 20 on a death save. If they fail a save, you stabilise them and punch them again to start over. :P
If you roll 20 on a death save, do you come back with 1 or more HP?
Çınar Demir Thanks, ill bare this in mind. Not that I make a habit of dying, but a gnome Berserker can be very temperamental. >.
50/50 odds if you exclude all but the two rolls that matter then. You have a valid point my friend >.
Roxy jokes about hitting Aiden
GM: "...sudden but inevitable betrayal"
Firefly reference
Good Job Greg
Really enjoyed watching parts one and two. I hope you are doing more!
Wow, you all had some serious problems at the beginning. Our druid was able to talk with the wolves, they were very hungry. We made a deal with them to not attack us if we got them some food. They were still chained up so we brought them the dead goblins we killed from area 2.
This is awesome. I just got the kit a few weeks ago and am actually hand drawing the 5 maps included
What happened to player 5, the rogue?
I think you ate him
+Patcherson dude!
Patcherson got em
They said what happened to him he went ahead alone to phanderlin to warn the town
Nice Dungeon Command box placement there, love that game as well :)
Really looking forward to the next one! It's a great combination of characters, that sometimes makes me cringe, but that's part of the charm I suppose.
new found respect for DM's, been DMing my first campaign and in the first 3 scenarios my party has managed to defeat each encounter without actually fighting the monsters (A bear, a puddle of urine and barrels of ale were involved) although they did manage to take damage thanks to playing a game of hot potato with a dagger.
I am new to D&D and bought the Starter set. I will DM so I thought this would be a great video to revise with. But at about 13 minutes in the video they mention about 1d4 Hours for a PC to regain consciousness. I can not see this explained in the rule book anywhere. I have tried google and that seems to come up short as well. Can anyone point out where in the rule books I need to be looking? (By the way I also have the Players Handbook). Thank you.
new as well. think it's the rules for "stabilizing a creature" though. see pg 76 of the basic rules (here: media.wizards.com/2016/downloads/DND/PlayerBasicRulesV03.pdf)
The basic rules say that a goblin wearing leather armor has a AC of 15. I guess this results of the leather armor (11) the dexterity modifier (+2) and the shield (+2). But the +2 of the shield only apply if it is equipped, right? So the goblin running into the cave to warn the others actually would have died, because he didn't have his shield ready, right?
or at least he woud have been hit
I lost it at "Weekend at Slurry's."
There needs to be a shirt for this...
have been playing D&D for about 30 years now. Still love it the same as I did when I first started. Will have to check out the changes they have made to it since the 3rd edition is the last ones I bought. Wondering what the difference between Pathfinder and the D&D rules sets. I'm enjoying the play through however. For some reason I enjoy these more then most movies that have been coming out. Thanks for the vids.
PS one of the kewlest party splits I have seen so far. Can't believe they lived ..
I wrote a long reply to your comment highlighting some of what I personally believe are the biggest differences between the two editions, but I have a better idea.
Head over to their new website: dnd.wizards.com
Scroll down and download the Basic rules set as a FREE PDF! Check out the four iconic classes and be amazed by the simplicity behind it all. The Basic PDF right now includes enough information to take your iconic class all the way to level 20, and it will soon also include monsters and DM guidelines.
Thanks for the info =)
Where did the goblin that came scouting out of the cave come from? I though they killed both the goblins in the lookout area in the first episode. I didn't see anything in the Adventure book about a scout coming out of the cave to relieve the lookout goblins but it makes perfect sense.
I know this is an ancient comment but I'll give my 2 cents. The players were hesitant to a fault to enter the cave. The goblins outside are lazy and easily surprised/dealt with. Since they were triggered by the players taking too long to enter, and the fight at the entrance would have made the players even more slow to act, the DM decided a fleeing mob would get them on their feet and inside quick.
the starter stuff is a good barebones jumping off point, but it doesn't suggest little things like that. The goblin wouldn't wipe them; one or two better rolls and it'd have died. Yet it lived but didn't alert any more danger. The players not knowing how long they had before more came were drawn in. It was a great read by the DM and moved the adventure along.
+mcgoo721 well stated
Just starting out and I'm hoping I'm doing the right thing as a Soon to be DM by watching this jist to see how it all comes together. Have the starter pack and bought the players handbook, dice and a DM Screen.
Do we need grid paper and figurines as I've seen with so many other videos?? Or just do what your doing here as that seems easier and awesome.
Also the maps... to clarify do I copy and print them out to hand to players or are they mine and mine alone to see? How do they know for example .. how many caves there are and how to get to them? Do I guide them towards them?
Thanks in advance... if you respond :)
anxiously awaiting part 3!
I have a question. I've run a couple of adventures in 4th edition and that is the only edition I've ever played. How do I keep track of combat without a map? "Theater of the mind" really appeals to me and I love it for anything not combat related because I can't seem to understand how to manage 5 goblins and 4 PC's for example without a visual system
DWARF WOMAN THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE!! XD lmao its a rare sighting but apperantly not imaginary :p
I love having Zach Braff as the DM.
Seriously?!? He looks nothing like Zach Braff. You rolled a critical miss on your "celebrity-look-a-like" check.
Not Given It is clearly Seth McFarland's younger brother...
No...
It's MatPat
I bought the Box Set and preorder the remaining books thru Dec.
Where can I get PDFs of this material ? I'm trying to run a game online and want maps/images to use. Is there a place I can order/purchase the pdf of these items ?
mikeschley.zenfolio.com
A conference room and disinterested coworker who can't stay off her phone (Roxy). Reminds me of my office!
So there were no dex saving throws on magic missile but on the clerics cantrip. Any reason why?
When can we expect the 3rd session? I hoped it would stream on Twitch last night, but it seems the session was moved to another date/time?
You can tell Liz is getting tired of Chris.
the one guy that wants to drag the starter enemy along for the whole campaign .
First Liz, then Chris, I don't think I would've done that to a player as a DM. It seems like no one's having fun dying and just waiting around until someone else dies. "Stash him in the bushes whiles everyone goes on without him" Felt like animosity.
Not Given If he rolled a Noble (variant: Knight) he could have left a retainer to look after her until she wakes up (although he can't attack or anything) with a message saying we went on ahead. Lol.
I thought he was going easy ;)
Hey I've watched a few of you're vids. Really enjoy them man! I was hoping If anyone could help me.
I'm new to D&D and I am confused about character creation, I understand when you play D&D 4e or 3 or 3.5 or even next. Etc etc. You play by the rules as in combat how things is calculated etc. But for example can I grab let's say an avenger from PHB2 and create one using 5e rules and play it in there? Or a different race or a spell or feat?
Thanks in advance
Is that a Dungeon Command box I see in the corner? Sting of Lolth?
when's part 3 coming out?
is the map included? or is there somewhere you can download it =?
What is that amazing font?
Is Emi a vet? She's turning out to be a pretty creative/awesome player!
I don’t think it would take an entire hour for the Cragmaw tribe to respond to an alarm. I think the DM is just allowing time for Roxy to heal.
Hey busy makers of the starter box ! Any chance of part 3 being uploaded soon ? :-)
A n y c h a n c e ?? :D
Was there any episodes after this one? Did they finish the campaign or is this just a promo?
Theres an episode 3
@@Samsam-oi1kp Yeah, I found it the next day. Strange that it wasn't easier. wft youtube? Thanks anyway. While I got you though, it looks like they stopped around episode 4, so here's a better question: did they do the whole module or just the beginning part?
The last episode i saw was pt 4 so :/ but i dont know
from 55 min on this episode is just pure gold
HAHAHAHAHA
My party tamed Klargs wolf today athough it chewed one leg off in the process of trying to escape.
I want to get into D&D so bad but I live in what I would call a relatively small city. No one I know plays. I have no idea how I would find a game, let alone get really into it the way I would like to. I love roleplaying so D&D would be perfect for me.
roll20.net/
+1 to the Roll20.net comment. I play with someone across the country.
lol I made an account. Finding a group right now. Actually, it looks like I've found two lol I have no idea what I'm doing still but I'm learning.
Playing right now in fact
awesome go to work and play D&D
Aiden started this video with 4 hit points left over from the previous video. He was then bitten by a wolf for 7 hit points. How was he still standing after that? He should have been knocked unconscious at 30:19...?
+Swash74 He got a chance to use one of his hit dice because they had a short rest to wait for Roxy to recover.
i don't get how it took so long for you to kill the wolves, i used burning hands on 5 and killed them all at once
The people have spoken. We demand follow ups to this video!!!!11
seriously guys, where's part n° 3?
didn't notice he was scaled up and was wondering why he looked so huge
Funny my 2e groop returning to tomb of elemental evil to destroy the body of crampus .
Weekend at krampuses next section
"have you seen my goblin? " X D
I started being the DM after about 2 hours total of gameplay... oh boy...
Wish my group was this well behaved
The problem with this group is that they are at work. Where is the beer? Where are the offensive jokes? Why are they not throwing cheezie poofs at each other?
What about xp? how does that work in this game?
where is part 3?
No sound at the beginning
What does he say at 21:50 ???
by god this Emi Tanji is very very cute
Handsome Dungeon master!
i wonder if this is the first time the dm was wearing a tie. it's so weird.
wow. he wore it all the way to the end too.
Why do you chose to play the new adventure? Adoptaions of old adventures were cool for promotion!
EMI FOR MVP FOR GOBLIN BANTER
He rolled a 1 and didn't immediately die.
Lol thought my sound was broken lol
World's tallest DM.
Love Liz
I'm waiting for the flood!!!
I think they made an error in the number of spells per day Liz had. As a 1st Level Cleric she should be able to select 2 spells at 1st level and be able to cast Level + Wisdom Modifier which in this case would mean she could cast any combination of the 2 spells 4 times
No they're correct. It's the other way around: any combination of 4 first-level spells 2 times per day. As far as I know, in D&D Fifith Edition, there is not any way to increase the number of spells you can cast per day.
Sébastien A well...there's leveling up ;)
Sébastien A
I reread the rules and you are correct. I had to reread it a couple of times to get it clear in my head. I think what confused me was the chart referring to them as slots.
As a Cleric you have a list of spells prepared and from those you get to choose which ones to use. When you use them, you fill up a spell slot. A 1st level a Cleric has 2 spell slots. Your list of prepared spell is = to your Wisdom Modifier + your level (4 in her case). Then you also get a list of spells when you choose a Domain that are always prepared on top of that. So, in her case, she has a list of SIX spells she can choose from and two slots to use them in (Plus, she gets 3 cantrips). Clerics get to pick new prepared spells after a long rest.
SPOILERS FOR LOST MINE OF PHANDELVER BELOW
So me and my 2 brothers were playing the Lost Mine of Phandelver, right? We get to the boss. So combat starts, initiative rolls are nothing special, but the boss IMMEDIATELY hits the save-this-guy NPC. He CRITS on the first hit. I was playing cleric and had no spells left, as I had to heal to not die. So this quest guy gets hit AGAIN, and it knocks him down. DM rolls saving throw, fails once, my turn. I try to res him with a saving throw and guess what? I roll a fucking one. He died. Seriously, this game is unfair Kappa
Pt. 3?
Those part 3 and up videos.
Chris seems to always complain 😂
Slurpy FTW!
Has Aofel's death taught you nothing?!? NEVER SPLIT THE PARTY! Bwahahahaha
