This week we're gonna talk about all things technique so we can play what every guitarist seems to want to do: shred double time lines over chord changes!
I'll show you guys some exercises and techniques for both your picking and fretting hands so you can more easily execute these super fast lines. We'll start out by playing an enclosure exercise in the key of F to work on our alternate picking.
Once we've got that down, I'll show you how I like to play scales across three octaves with a combination of economy picking and left hand slurs. To wrap up the technical portion of the lesson, we'll go over how to use sweep picking inside of one octave to more easily articulate up and down arpeggios in F major.
Then, we'll crack on with learn two double time phrases that work over a ii-V-I chord progression. We'll of course be making use of Barry Harris' half step rules for dominant scales as well as the dominant family concept in these phrases as well so make sure you're familiar with those ideas. I'll play both phrases for you up to tempo and then break down all the theory and technique behind each line in depth.
This week, patrons and members get access to an additional 8 double time phrases so if you're interested in that make sure to head on over and join the studio.

I really liked that enclosure exercise, if you're looking for content a dedicated video on enclosures would be great
That's a wonderful idea, Adrian! Thanks for the suggestion. I'll add that the the list. This coming week will most likely be about some ways to practice chord accompaniments and different voice leading ideas.
I love me some slurs
Nice!
nice video! i have one question, what do you mean with "the dominant family" at 11:18 i can´t get it
I did a video on this concept a few weeks ago. Watch this video to learn more. th-cam.com/video/IOoyVW8E1bY/w-d-xo.html
It's a fascinating concept with lots of depth in application.
Same picking strategy as Yngwie Malmsteen!
Really? I didn't realize he was am economy picker. I thought outside of arpeggio runs he was an alternate picker. Neat!
Because he's has a permanent downward pick slant he can't clear strings when descending, so has to throw in a pull off to give him time to get to the next string. He economy picks ascending for similar reasons. It's become well known more recently due to a few TH-cam teachers that have broken down his strategies.
@@AdrianFarrell interesting! I had no idea
What make and model jazz box ya playing?
It's an eastman AR403CED
