Hey guys! Welcome back for part two of my rhythm changes workout. As a follow up to last week's lesson, I'm gonna show you how to us the phrase outlines from the PDF resource I developed to help you guys work out your bebop vocabulary.
We'll start out by learning an example phrase outline, using some of the lines I taught you in last week's lesson. Then, I'll show you the results of my own practice using this resource over the last week. I spent time practicing improvising lines in between the phrases in the outline and then transcribed my favorite ones to teach you guys today. Finally, we'll combine these examples into an etude that can serve as an example of an idealized chorus of rhythm changes.

@@ilcamileon6617 you're welcome! Glad you liked it!
perfect for me at the moment as I’ve just started working on combining enclosures and arpeggios.
@MorningCarnival nice! That's a great spot to be in. Put some pivots in there and baby you got a stew goin.
All I can say is were have you been all my life?? Lol. This is what I've been searching out for a long time. Thank you so much!!
@thefactorycollective haha! You're welcome. Glad I could help!
So much to digest here! This really ties a lot together.
@cat3rpill3r wow thanks so much for the super thanks! Much appreciated!
Nice man! Thanks 😎
@@willmason03 you're welcome. Thanks for watching!
So... the big question... when you're running up an inversion's arpeggio, I suppose you need to remember the final/ "soprano" chord degree (1,3,5,7) of that inversion and that in the chord you're going to, the pivot note is one degree lower than the "soprano" in the first arpeggio/ chord... cuz that's how pivots work... if you're going to keep running arpeggios and not just come down the scale or something else.
so actually in the time since I put this video up i've changed my view on things. The pivot is actually the octave displacement and the step down (or any other place) is a resolution. So in this way, you can pivot in a multitude of ways depending on how you want the line to resolve.
I’m having trouble finding the pdf?
If you've joined the patreon or as a youtube member at the $10 level you should be able to access it no problem. Thanks!
Maybe retitle/ thumbnail this video to mention Minor 2-5 up front… it’s “the secret” to playing over them. Sort of obvious but us newbs don’t know!
@@ChristianCummins-Elliott thanks for the suggestion! That's a great idea. This one didn't do great when I uploaded, maybe a poor title choice is why haha.
Great content! What is the music notation software you’re using?
@@PlayBetterJazz thanks! I use sibelius for notation.
I’m tired of sounding like a rock guy trying to play jazz. I’m getting better but now everyone probably thinks I’m a freak being stuck in the middle. Nobody loves me or my jazzy rock or rocky jazz 😢. Just kidding great video man. 😎🎸
Hi, I really enjoyed that lesson, as I am exploring the Barry Harris method. I bought your two truefire videos for now. Thank you for your service!
@@pffddspc thanks so much for the support! I hope you enjoy the courses and get a lot out of them. If you ever have questions or need more, I offer video exchange lessons on truefire as well. Thanks again!
Thanks. Do you provide also Guitar Pro (or xml) file on your Patreon?
No guitar pro but I'm gonna start including xml files. It'll take a bit but I'm also planning to go through and add them to all the older videos as well.

This is very good. I'm a professional-level classical player but have never been able to bring my jazz improv skills, which are next to nothing, up to a decent level. Over the decades, jazz cats have told me, "Simply listen to a lot of jazz." This advice never worked for me (listened to jazz since the late 80s but it has never transferred to my playing).
@songandwind72 yeah the listening is important but just like with classical, you have to find or be taught ways to practice the material in a methodical way. Super difficult to just get it by osmosis. Thanks for watching!
David- in terms of learning shapes- scales, arpeggios, triads, etc. - would you recommend working them in (all) string groups down the neck first, which limitation really implies one octave groups, then using that familiarity to run them in full across and then all around the neck? Seems to be your approach across these videos. Another beautiful video.
Yeah I think this is a great approach. Learning huge 3 octave shapes is great but a lot of jazz lines happen inside the octave so have facility on that level is super useful. I would also reccomend learning the segovia scale patterns for how they can teach you about using shifts rather than stretches to span the fingerboard. Hope that helps!
Thanks very much.
Great
I tell my wife she’s barely begun to scratch the surface of the applications of this one tiny lick too.
@@ChristianCummins-Elliott hahaha boooo!
Great lesson, and great style of teaching. Please keep making content. Definitely have the recipe for success.
@@Cleveland_Chris thank you! I appreciate the support!
Great lesson. Instantly subscribed!
Thanks so much! Glad you liked it!
I believe the 6:18 lick is from Yardbird Suite
oooh thanks! wonder if it pops up in any other places before that recording.
Great video...do you show more about enclosure on exploring melodic jazz comping ?
@cisko971 no that's all about accompaniment strategies. There's a bunch more about enclosures peppered throughout other videos here on the channel though.
❤ Beautifully done! Clear, well organized & Elegant. Thank you! As always all my Best!
Thanks so much, I'm really glad you liked it!
Another great lesson
Only channel I follow these days. Most effectively changed my playing. Cool stuff man.
@tahmidsuprav8347 wow! Glad I've made an impact 😌
I discovered the Studio a couple of weeks ago, my new favorite channel, thank you. 😊
Aww thank you so much! That's really kind of you to say ❤️
This is a great way of thinking about connecting lines over progressions
Glad you think so. I've found this method super helpful in my own practice. Thanks for watching!
Nice licks. Great explanation of the thinking behind them.
Thanks so much! Glad you found them useful.
Loving this content
Thank you!
Hi. Are you going to continue making these videos? I was interested in getting some videos to learn standards, like trio chord-melody, comping, and improv etude, just like you have here. Could you tell me if you are doing something like this in your Patreon? The Barry Harris ideas were a little too far from my knowledge, but I think I will see the video you advised. Thank you.
@MrTelmoM this series has morphed into a patron exclusive. Rather than one big video I go through each element of the tune sequentially over multiple episodes. Mist recently we did It Could Happen to you.
@ 5:18 surely a 2 - 5 in the key of C is not F - G but Dm - G, this has confused me ???? Are you referring to the relevant minor of F ??? Am I missing something here?
@steve_one no but the triads of f and g give you relevant chord tones to Dmin7 and G7
The first part was good. The example pieces were too short/fast to really hear the chord changes. I would have focused on the common triad pairs (beside IV and V in major) and why.
@@jimkangas4176 thanks for the feedback!
this is my favorite lesson on triad pairs by a long mile. thanks for sharing.
@ramseyomery aww thanks, man! Glad you think so. I know there's already a ton out there. Happy I could contribute something to the discussion.
THANKS
@@davidpatrick1813 you're super welcome!

Ты так много говоришь и красиво)а играешь плохо и мало))
according to this guy: "You talk so much and beautifully) but you play poorly and little." Thanks, jerk.
Oh man, I absolutely love this, thanks you! It seems a much more practical way to apply all these concepts to the instrument. I’m definitely going to check out your TF course as well, cheers!
Glad you found this helpful! It's one of my favorite patterns to practice and play. Hope you enjoy the Truefire material, too! There's tons more like this here on the channel as well, so feel free to poke around. If there's something specific you'd like to see covered or expanded on, feel free to let me know!
@@dsg_studio I most certainly will, thanks very much!
Excellent video and loved you referencing Robbie, he is amazing.

that lick at 8:24 is so satfisfying to play in a loop
@newtonlkh it's a fun one all right! Thanks for watching!
very intersting!!! practicing it right now! thanks!
You're welcome!
Hey! I really love your videos, but I have a slight issue - it’s barely anything, and don’t want to come across as unappreciative or critical - it’s the scratchy handwriting sound that plays while text is written on the screen, it just does something to my brain where I am instantly distracted from the great stuff you’re saying! I wouldn’t mention it, but it’s in every video and means that I have to go back to focus harder on listening to you each time. Is it possible to turn it down in the mix a little? Sorry for the request, I know it’s dumb and it’s a me problem 😅
@crow-dont-know haha no worries. I've tried to mix it as low as possible to just add some flair to the graphics. I'll see about retuning it in future videos or finding a smoother sounding sound sample. Thanks for the feedback.
This is the missing link for me!
So happy to hear that! It's a really fun sequence and can lead to a lot wonderful discoveries. Thanks for watching!
👍🎶
Triads are the secret building blocks of playing good music. Once you mastered it will open many ways of playing all over the guitar fretboard. It a simple 1 3 5 intervals played in its inverted forms 3 5 1 or 5 1 3. You can add additional intervals [E.g. 7th) to give a more bluesy or jazz up the chord voicing with a (9, 11, etc) in your playing.
Great lesson
@tomrechsteiner4715 thank you!
Incredible how you're able to simplify two challenging concepts. Thanks!!
@AntoineJoseph you're welcome. Glad I was able to provide some clarity!
