I interpreted this video not as a criticism of special Ed, as many comments suggest. I viewed it as criticism about the SST process- how general education teachers identify students with different needs and deal with it. The SST process is not just supposed to be a hoop teachers jump through to get difficult kids out of their classrooms, it's a problem solving session which should enable most students to be successful in the classroom. I'm a teacher of a special classroom and we do not operate like a prison. We're all about teaching students skills that will enable him or her to live the life that he or she actually wants to live, and won't be imprisoned by a lack of skills. BTW I found this video fantastic. Hilarious! True.
And don't forget, besides having a 45 minute meeting about Jimmy, you need to have a 45 minute meeting about Sally, Joe, Johnny, Doug, Shea, Simon and Jenny. That's just for today. Oh, you want to grade papers? Sorry, you'll have to do that on YOUR time.
Everytime he said "probably" I giggled, but when he kept saying "let's put him in special ed" I just laughed so damn loud🤣 This is gold, but kind of very sad and it reveals the situation in many schools.
In case anyone is wondering - yes these meetings can happen just like this. They just forgot the 20 minute intro talking about their lunch, the weather or the football team.
I think it depends on the student and the state and the district and the school and even the teachers. My son has had some great experiences and terrible ones. In Texas they still have a lot of segregated classrooms. In New England where we live now most kids are still in a regular classroom but get extra support. Kids with autism tend to be academically advanced but need support with social situations and anxiety. They may learn math so quickly that repetition is stressful to them.
special education is not just about academics. Kids on the autism spectrum need a lot of support but can often take high level classes because intellectually they're capable of the work. They might need help with disruptive behavior, sensory processing issues and note-taking. Handwriting is very difficult for them. Sitting still is difficult. Interacting with other kids is extremely difficult but is absolutely required in public schools.
Not really, there are plenty of Special education students with High IQs. You may have a friend, doctor,or lawyer who was in Special education and not even know it. Your boss may have even been in Special ed.
i laughed until i cried...cried because this painfully true conversation is what I have witnessed in my early yearls of teachng. That s*@t is what is going behind closed doors... a message to parents with children who could be targeted...stay involved in your child's education. If left op to the teache,r he very well could be "that kid"
Actually, they don't care if the classroom teacher is there. They usually ignore what he/she has to say even though they are the ones who spend all day long teaching and working with the child.
For whatever reason, school districts continue to get away with putting physically disabled students in special education classes. When will it stop? They need to stop shoving everyone who might have a hang nail into special education classes. It's entirely inappropriate, but they continue to get away with it! It's time that they be held accountable for providing the tools, supports and services that are necessary for students to thrive in general education courses.
I got a referral to special Ed I know realize as a sped student that I don't belong there if you don't have problems and wanna be in there no don't join it's not worth it...
It is funny how the immediate solution to an educational issue is Special Education. Parents know your rights and don't allow your children to be place inappropriately because someone does not want to do his/her job.
wtf? Is he improtant to this meeting? probably Is he improtant to this meeting? probably Is she improtant to this meeting? probably Lets put him in special education. what is he struggling in yes lets put him i special education what is he struggling in yes lets put him i special education what is he struggling in yes

This video is hilarious. The creator has obviously been in real life RTI meetings. I thoroughly enjoyed this!
- Wouldn't the school psychologist be an important person to have at this meeting?
- Probably.... ANYWAY
"It would be a seat move even further" - I love that!
Genius, right?😂
This is hilarious! As a teacher, this is so painfully true. I'm so glad it was shared at yesterday's faculty meeting. :)

I've been to enough bad IEP meetings that this is funny like skipping the Novocaine at the dentist's office to fully experience being drilled.
I seriously can't stop laughing. This is the BEST!

I knew I heard him say yes when she asked him about the work sample

these were my meetings all through school as a kid sitting in front didn't help me out with concentration at all
I feel like this has some kind of story behind it. Like this person had this happen to them.
In what areas specifically? Yes.
anyone who has been part of an ARD meeting knows those awkward silences way too well...

Could someone try to tell me who the two representatives are suppose to be in the video? I thought it was suppose to be a parent and vice-principal.
you'd be suprised, at my school there was a Special Ed kid Who took Pre calculus.AP stats, and AP calculus and did tons of other AP classes.

I think that girl was trying to stall that meeting cuz she kept asking question!!!!
It's 1:38 for the dragonfly :)
That about sums it up for our referral process.
But you didn't talk for 45 minutes therefor this meeting was not effective.
Oh.my.wow. Spot on!

I am in Special Education due to my poor performance in school.
I can't... I can't even... no.

This kind of thing actually happens...
The truth is offensive.
